Our Smart Grid System Vision Smart grid storage: multiple big data repositories for specifications, time series, schedules, etc. Smart grid middleware: overlay of virtual control nodes communicating via messages Communication networks & messaging:access to sensor/actuator interfaces via multiple transmission technologies and protocols Instrumented power grid: generators, loads, power lines, transformers Department of Computer Science, Chair for Application & Middleware Systems 2
Cf. Green Middleware Technische Universität München Smart Grid Research Questions What could smart grid systems look like? How can optimization problems be efficiently translated into distributed communication protocols & algorithms? What are the design alternatives and associated (dis)advantages? What are the technical requirements of such systems? Is state-of-the-art middleware capable of dealing with the requirements of electrical power grid control? How many messages need to be exchanged with what (real)-time guarantees? How many measurements are required for accurate system state estimation? Which data needs to be stored and processed? Department of Computer Science, Chair for Application & Middleware Systems 3
Need Real Data Much of this work requires real data From the whole generation-consumption pipeline From loads (e.g., buildings, data centers, PEVs, etc.) Therefore, access to testbeds is quintessential Instrumented generators, transmission lines, etc. Entire campus, individual buildings, suites, rooms, etc. Buildings as loads (should be easy to get!) Log sensors & track actuators Assess comfort of users Department of Computer Science, Chair for Application & Middleware Systems 4
A Potential Living Lab? Technische Universität München Room schedule Lighting control Window control Power-plug sensor Door control Sensors Occupant feedback Occupant location Actuators Temperature sensor Humidity sensor HVAC control Department of Computer Science, Chair for Application & Middleware Systems 5
Application Scenario(s) Would you like to shape off 12% of your utility bill, at negligible change in comfort level? Department of Computer Science, Chair for Application & Middleware Systems 6
