2 Context EC Digital Agenda objective is to deliver more than 30 Mbps to 100% of European households by Market forecast in 2020: in many European regions >50% households will lack superfast broadband. However, all will have the ability to access satellite and most to some lower speed terrestrial access technologies. BATS vision: BATS will develop and demonstrate the concept of a fully integrated terrestrial and satellite communication system to enhance the quality of experience in those areas of Europe which will be unserved or underserved in terms of superfast broadband availability. 3 BATS Objectives Definition and validation of novel integrated end-to-end communication architecture for the provision of BB services in unserved and under-served areas. Investigate and design new techniques to improve the use of all network resources and to increase the aggregate throughput of satellite communication links. Define and validate an integrated network management framework to allow the efficient and cost effective deployment and operation of the BATS infrastructure. Develop and validate the IUG and service concept within a QoE framework for the seamless E2E connectivity of BB applications. Examine methods to determine QoE requirements from applications and define new test methods to assess real user experience. Define a sustainable business model for integrated service delivery scenarios and assess the impact for stakeholders across the value chain. Optimise the design and control algorithms to enable carbon footprint minimisation. Develop pre-standards in the following areas: satellite access network reference architectures, interoperability and integration of fixed satellite systems with terrestrial systems, integrated network management. 21

9 BATS Solution (2/3) The Intelligent User and Network Gateways Intelligent User Gateway (IUG) Intelligent Network Gateway (ING) Satellite Traffic Classification Link Selection Link Monitoring 3G/4G Link Monitoring Link Selection Traffic Classification Internet Content server End-user xdsl Operator Due to links high heterogeneity, state of the art load balancing algorithms would be sub-optimal Designed to optimise TCP (and HTTP) traffic, as they are now main protocols dominating Internet traffic Based on Multi-Path TCP concept, with IUG and ING as proxies. Different TCP subflows per path between source and destination host, but same interface for Application and Network layers. Modular design. 10 BATS Solution (3/3) Integrated Broadband service delivered to the end-user via the Intelligent User Gateway (IUG) Intelligent Network Gateway (ING) performing link selection on downstream traffic, and acting as interface/gateway for the IUGs to public Internet, synchronizing and combining data streams sent by IUGs towards different access networks. ING located as close as possible to terrestrial operator core network not to increase latency of services routed terrestrially Centralized satellite PEP close or at ING, avoiding internal rerouting and synch in case of satellite gateway handover 15

14 Conclusion and outlook Satellite technology is continuing to develop in capability whilst coming down in price Will become more affordable More closely integrated with other technologies BATS project has confirmed a strong market opportunity both for satellite and the integrated concept Project runs until end of December and there will be feedback from trials.and publication of results. 19
