4 Traditional grid operation The current state of traditional grid operation no longer meets today s requirements. The unidirectional flow of energy, data and money, as well as the lack of centrally controllable generation sources call for the development of new solutions. Measuring components have no or only very limited communication functionality. Monitoring is limited to the ultra-high, high and medium voltage sector. Decentralized electricity generation needs intelligent management. Nowadays, energy is generated remotely and is transported bidirectionally. Output levels must be controllable at the end user. The growing number of electricity producers, whether for the private home, with wind power or hydroelectric power, increasingly need more facilities for decentralized communication. At present, energy surpluses cannot be stored, whilst there is a growing energy demand that often cannot be met economically. Energy storage facilities are required here, as have already been conceived for electric vehicles. Active grid management as a consequence This allows the representation of bidirectional load flows with the energy supply in medium and low-voltage grid systems. Smart home and home automation, as well as the management of storage capacity allow optimum control of capacity and flexibility. 5 Smart Grid IEC Standard The new global standard for automating grid supply systems integrated in the technology. The PIS- 10 IEC software stack can be started both as a client and as a server.
