Resolution Prerequisites Review the following procedures: Verify that all backup operations are up to date Verify General Federation Health Before Starting a Procedure Preventing ESD Damage 1

2 Drive replacement requires a RAID rebuild, which might take some time to complete on a storage array that contains many GB or TB of data. The rebuild may proceed faster if you can: Quiesce I/O, or do the replacement operation at a time when I/O is minimal Shut down the virtual machines (VMs) Migrate VMs to an alternate host Solution Identifying a Failed Drive You can identify drive problems by: Viewing the CN Series system hardware status: In vsphere Client, expand the datacenter that contains the CN Series system, select the OmniCube, click the Hardware Status tab, and expand Storage. Viewing events and alarms: In vsphere Client, expand the datacenter that contains the CN Series system and select the OmniCube, then, click the Task & Events tab or the Alarms tab. Examining the drive LEDs as shown in the following table: If a drive fails, or is failing, contact your authorized support provider to obtain a replacement drive of the same type, size, and speed. 2

3 Failed Drive Removal Procedure To remove a drive from a CN-Series system: 1. Press the release button (2) to release the drive handle. 2. Rotate the handle (3) outwards. The drive ejects from the drive slot when the handle is completely open. 3. As the drive ejects, support it by holding the edge of the plastic drive carrier (1) and pull it from the slot. 4. When the drive is fully removed, rotate the handle (3) inward and click it into place. 5. Put the drive in a safe place. When you have unpacked and installed the replacement drive, you can use the packaging to return the defective drive. Removing a Hard Drive from a Hard-Drive Carrier 1. Remove the screws from the slide rails on the hard-drive carrier. 2. Lift the hard drive out of the hard-drive carrier as shown in the following diagram. 1. Hard-drive carrier 2. Hard drive 3. 4 Installing a Hard Drive Into a Hard-Drive Carrier To install a hard drive into a hard-drive carrier: 1. Insert the hard drive into the hard-drive carrier with the connector end of the hard drive toward the back. 2. Align the screw holes on the hard drive with the set of screw holes on the hard-drive carrier. When aligned correctly, the back of the hard drive is flush with the back of the hard-drive carrier. 3. Attach the screws to secure the hard drive to the hard-drive carrier. Drive Installation Procedure To install a hard drive in a CN Series system: 1. Make sure that the replacement drive is the same type, speed, and capacity. 2. Carefully remove the replacement drive from its packaging. Retain the packaging for returning the defective drive. 3. Hold the drive by the edge of the plastic drive carrier (1) and press the release button (2) to release the drive handle. 4. Rotate the handle (3) outwards. 5. Orient the drive properly: horizontal for CN-2000 and CN-3000 models; vertical for CN-5000 models. 6. Grasp the edge of the plastic drive carrier (1) and insert the drive into the slot, stopping when you feel resistance. 7. Rotate the handle (3) inward and press the drive completely into the slot. 8. Make sure the new disk drive is operational by examining the drive LEDs and checking for event messages and monitor the RAID rebuild as described in Monitoring a RAID Rebuild. Monitoring a RAID Rebuild You can monitor the RAID rebuild as follows: Locally, using the drive LEDs; see the LED table above. Remotely, using vsphere Client or the Intelligent Management Platform Interface (IPMI). SimpliVity recommends this method. Using vsphere Client 1. Log in to vsphere Client. 2. Click the OmniCube in the Inventory panel. 3. Click the SimpliVity tab and expand the data on the screen: The Status column indicates whether a RAID rebuild is proceeding. If the RAID rebuild is not running or is complete, the Status column shows only Healthy for every line item. 4

5 Using IPMI 1. Connect a browser to IPMI and log in as root. 2. Click on Virtual Disks in the left hand navigation pane. 3. If a RAID rebuild is running, the State will show Rebuild, and when complete, this field changes to Online. 4. Click on Physical Disks, to list all drives. Again, the state will show Rebuild, when complete, this field changes to Online.
