1 Hardware Announcement October 31, 2006 IBM System Storage DS4700 Express Models offer 4 Gbps NEBS-3 compliant DS4000 series midrange disk systems for telco applications HVEC Overview The IBM System Storage DS4000 series of high-performance, high-availability, business-critical storage solutions now includes two dc-powered models that are especially suited for telco industry environments. The IBM System Storage DS4700 Express Models 70-DC and 72-DC are NEBS-3 compliant midrange disk systems designed to be powered from a -48 V dc telco industry-standard power source. These models are designed to operate at up to 4 Gbps Fibre Channel speeds for connectivity to 4 Gbps attached host systems and optionally attached 4 Gbps DS4000 storage expansion units. The DS4700 models come in a 3U rack-mountable enclosure, which accommodates up to 16 E-DDMs and houses redundant, dual-active intelligent RAID controllers that support RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10. The DS4700 has an internal physical storage capacity of up to 4.8 TB using 300 GB E-DDMs, or up to 8 TB by using 500 GB SATA E-DDMs. Physical storage capacity can be increased up to 56 TB by attachment of up to six DS4000 EXP810 Storage Expansion Units. The DS4000 EXP810 Expansion Unit Model 81-DC, which is NEBS-3 compliant and designed to be powered from a -48 V dc power source, is also announced today. Models 70-DC and 72-DC are designed to deliver high performance with advanced function and high availability using sixth-generation architecture that provides 4 Gbps FC connectivity directly to host servers, SAN fabric, and disk drive expansion enclosures. Both models connect to host servers and SAN fabric via host ports and connect to DS4000 storage expansion units via disk drive expansion ports. Model 70-DC contains four 4 Gbps FC host ports and four 4 Gbps FC drive ports. Model 72-DC employs eight 4 Gbps FC host ports and four 4 Gbps FC drive ports. You can enable the ports by populating them with 4 Gbps small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers. Four shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers are included with the Model 70-DC shipment group and six shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers are included with Model 72-DC. For the Model 70-DC, depending on your requirements, you can use the four supplied SFP transceivers to populate the four host ports (two ports per controller), if the configuration does not require DS4000 storage expansion units. Alternatively, you can use the four SFP transceivers to populate two host ports (one port per controller) and two disk expansion ports (one port per controller). If you need additional connectivity, you can order up to two shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceiver options (26K7941) for connectivity to all host and drive ports. Each shortwave SFP transceiver option (26K7941) contains two shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers and populates two host or two drive ports. For the Model 72-DC, depending on your requirements, you can use the six supplied SFP transceivers to populate six of the eight host ports (three ports per controller), if the configuration does not require DS4000 storage expansion units. Alternatively, you can use the six SFP transceivers to populate four host ports (two ports per controller) and two disk expansion ports (one port per controller) or two host ports and four drive ports. If you need additional connectivity, you can order up to three shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceiver options (26K7941) for connectivity to all host and drive ports on the DS4700 Model 72-DC. You can expand storage capacity by attaching DS4000 storage expansion units for configurations up to 56 TB physical storage capacity. Up to six DS4000 storage expansion units (up to maximum of 112 E-DDMs) can be attached to the DS4700 dc power models. Model 70-DC comes with the authorization to enable up to 16 E-DDMs. The EXP 1 to 3 Attachment option (41Y5122) enables up to three DS4000 storage expansion units (up to 64 E-DDMs). The EXP 4 to 6 Attachment option (41Y5225) enables up to six DS4000 expansion units (up to 112 E-DDMs). Model 72-DC comes with the authorization for up to three DS4000 storage expansion units (up to 64 E-DDMs). EXP 4 to 6 Attachment option (41Y0704) enables up to six DS4000 expansion units (up to 112 E-DDMs). DC power cables Two dc power cords, part number 42D3294, one for each of the dc power supplies contained in the DS4700 Models 70-DC and 72-DC, are supplied in the shipment group for connection to a -48 V dc power source. The dc power cords are four meters in length, RoHS compliant, and are suitable for domestic and international use. One end of the dc power cable assembly is terminated with a connector that plugs directly into the mating dc input receptacle on the DS4700 or EXP810 dc power supply. The other end of the cable is terminated with ring terminals (ring terminals fit a 6-mm (0.24-in) diameter pin or stud) for attachment to a dc power source. Cable description and wiring requirements Individual conductor wire gauge: 10 gauge, AWG, suitable for equipment rated up to 32 amperes. Overall cable outside diameter: 10.0 mm (0.395 in). All wiring connections must be UL recognized and CSA certified. All plastic materials must have UL recognized flame classification of V-1 or better. All wiring insulation must have a UL recognized flame classification of VW-1, or better. DS4000 Storage Manager DS4000 Storage Manager V9.16, or later, available for the DS4700, includes the host-based server code with a GUI designed for configuring, monitoring, and managing one or more DS4000 storage systems. It offers a common storage management platform for the DS4000 series. The DS4000 Storage Manager gives administrators a powerful, yet easy-to-use management interface. It enables you to perform configuration, reconfiguration, expansion, maintenance, and performance tuning, while helping you avoid system downtime and interruption to system I/O. The flexibility of configuring the DS4000 Storage Manager lets you mix drive technologies (when intermix is activated), manage RAID levels, segment sizes, volume group sizes, volume characteristics, and cache policies. When you activate the optional storage partitioning features, the DS4000 Storage Manager can enable a single DS4000 storage system to function as multiple logical storage systems to meet the needs of storage consolidation in heterogeneous environments. Additionally, the DS4000 Storage Manager enables management of advanced copy services features such as FlashCopy and VolumeCopy when separately activated. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eserver platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent. Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support.
