3500 VGS Instruction Manual Page INTRODUCTION The Farmscan 3500 VGS is a versatile programmable precision farming tool. Which has been designed specifically for agricultural use, to provide a reliable and user friendly control interface. The 3500 VGS offers parallel guidance with several guidance related features along with an external lightbar. The VGS screen is split into two sections with more than 60% of the display devoted to guidance and the remaining 40% devoted to speed, area, data logging and alarm messaging. During guidance, a virtual road, steering prompts, a row counter, heading and cross track error are all displayed. A boundary and headland function enables field area to be calculated while notifying the operator when headland areas have been entered. The unit will record coverage maps and store them on a data card as well as display totals for up to 100 sub areas (trips). One set of AB guidance lines are stored per trip, meaning to work a field that has been covered already all that has to be done is activate the same trip and guidance will start immediately. Coverage maps can be downloaded and viewed in Farmscan Data Manager. The 3500 VGS has a flag function, which for example allows operators to stop work, flag a point and be guided back to the same flag point to resume work. While using the flag feature the 3500 will be put on hold ceasing all data accumulation and logging. Another feature of the VGS system is the headland-hold function. Which after recording a boundary and headland areas, will automatically put the 3500 on hold when a headland area has been entered. All logging and data accumulation will be automatically stopped. The 3500 is equipped with a liquid crystal display that can be adjusted for contrast to best suit viewing conditions. The 3500 platform upon which the guidance system operates has been designed to grow as new applications are integrated. The versatility of the canlink allows it to be reprogrammed in the field using a MMC data card. Already in place, the canlink has several yield functions, variable rate for up to four products, and soil sampling functions.

3500 VGS INSTALLATION Page INSTALLATION There are only two points of installation to be concerned with. They are the installation of the canlink and the GPS. The external light bar and master switch are optional. 3.1 CANLINK MOUNTING BRACKET INSTALLATION Adhere the two rubber adhesive washers (HG-005) provided in the kit onto the inside of the canlink s mounting bracket (AH-405). This prevents the canlink from rolling back and forth in the bracket once mounted. Mount bracket in a convenient, in-reach, in-view position in the vehicle s cab. Arrange all connection cables to the canlink to take an alternative route to other electrical cables in the cab, particularly petrol engine kill switch cables. 3.3 GPS INSTALLATION For best mapping results mount the GPS/DGPS antenna following the guidelines below:?? Mount the antenna on the highest position (to avoid satellite obstructions) possible along the vehicle s front to back center-line.?? The antenna should be mounted at least 1.5 metres away from any transmitting antennae (of any frequency).?? The antenna should be mounted level or as close to level as possible. 3.3 WIRING INSTALLATION A diagram showing the connections to be made is on page 6. CONNECTION to CANLINK Important! Power to the system is connected last after installation is finished. CONNECTION to GPS Connect the GPS unit to the DB9 male connector on the canlink, labelled DGPS INPUT. If the softkey is inoperable within a particular display there will be no adjacent icon on the screen.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page MAIN SCREEN The main screen of the canlink VGS is divided into 7 areas as follows: 1. GPS co-ordinates & time 2. Guidance 3. Row numbering/headland Alert 4. Speed 5. Trip area 6. Alarm messages 7. Guidance functions The following sections describe the items seen on the main screen TRIP & SPEED In section 4 of the main screen (see above) the current speed as output from the GPS is displayed. In section 5 of the screen (see above) the area covered under the trip is displayed. The trip number displayed is the trip under which all records are currently being accumulated. There are 100 available trips. To reset the trip area, go to the records screen ( RECORDS button) and press the RESET key twice.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page BOUNDARY The boundary feature calculates the area of a field (displayed under TRIP) and determines the locations of headland areas to notify operators when a headland area has been notified. To RECORD a BOUNDARY 1. Press the BOUNDA softkey to mark the first point of the boundary. The message RECORDING BOUNDARY will be displayed in the top right of the screen. 2. Complete a lap of the field, see diagram below.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page On completion of the boundary press BOUNDB. The canlink will then display the total area of the field under trip area. HEAD will now replace the word BOUNDB and a RECORDING HEADLAND message will be displayed, indicating that headland area is being recorded. 4. Continue driving until all of the headland area has been covered, then press HEAD. Guidance AB points can now be set to display parallel guidance. 5. After the guidance AB points have been set, the canlink will give off an audible beep and display the message HEADLAND WARNING in the top right of the screen, indicating a headland area has been entered. NOTE: The canlink can be setup to go on hold once the headland area is entered. See HEADLAND HOLD in the calibration section of the manual. 6. When leaving the headland area the canlink will produce an audible beep and the warning message will disappear. IMPORTANT! Only one boundary can be recorded. Therefore, should the operator enter another trip and want to record another boundary, the previously stored boundary must be cleared! TO CLEAR STORED BOUNDARY 1. Highlight RESET, see diagram below. 2. Press and hold the top RESET key for 2 seconds. The stored boundary will be cleared and a new boundary can now be set.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 15 IMPORTANT: WHEN RECORDING BOUNDARIES! NOTE Max 5km from BOUNDA point You can not drive more than 5 kilometres from the start of the boundary or the BOUNDA point. See diagram below. NOTE Max 1 hour Boundary and Headland Recording You can only record boundary and headlands for a maximum of 1 hour. NO GPS If GPS information is lost during guidance or boundary recording the bottom three softkeys shown below will be inoperable. All guidance functions will stop. To reset boundary recording or clear AB lines you must first be receiving GPS information before the RESET softkeys become operable.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page PARALLEL SWATH GUIDANCE Once the setup swath (A to B) has been locked in, the parallel swath guidance feature will guide the operator along up to 200 swaths either side (200 left & 200 right) of the setup swath. NOTE: Swaths can be completed in any order. IMPORTANT - GPS SETTINGS! For parallel swath guidance the GPS must output the GPGGA and GPVTG strings. If the baud rate on the GPS can be selected, baud should be selected and the frequency needs to be set to 5Hz. TO SET UP PARALLEL SWATH GUIDANCE To setup parallel swath guidance the operator must drive the first swath and set the A and B points. 1. Drive into the field, make sure the canlink is receiving GPS/DGPS coordinates. The canlink can be on or off hold. 2. Prepare to drive the first swath. Align the vehicle with the direction of the swath but do not start driving the first swath. 3. Approach the start of the first swath and when it has been reached press the bottom softkey under "POINT A". The start co-ordinates have now been stored and "POINT B" will be displayed. 4. Keep driving along the swath and near the end of the swath press the softkey under "POINT B". The end co-ordinates of the swath have now been stored and "RESET" is displayed. Indicating that the setup swath has been locked in and the canlink is ready to guide to any parallel swath. TO CANCEL GUIDANCE! Guidance can be cancelled at anytime. 1. Highlight RESET (bottom right of screen). 2. Press and hold the top RESET key for two seconds.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 17 IF CANLINK IS TURNED OFF! If the canlink is turned off or loses power during guidance, guidance to the same swath will start again from the current position once power is restored. STORAGE OF GUIDANCE LINES: Guidance data points are stored with trip information so the system will remember up to 100 sets of guidance lines. BEING GUIDED Guidance information is displayed in the left hand side of the main screen. The information displayed shows the distance from the guidance line (cross track error) and heading information, which helps maintain the path along the guidance line. Guidance information is also being displayed on the optional light bar, see page 17. CROSS TRACK ERROR Cross track error is the error to the left or right of the current swath being driven. The guidance window also shows which side (left or right) the error is on (need to steer in the same direction as the indicators). The number given is the actual distance the operator is off the line. IMPORTANT!

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 18 > < means 'on track'. HEADING ERROR INFORMATION The line protruding from the apex of the triangle represents the rate at which the operator is deviating off course or coming on course. The larger the angle of the line the more off course the operator is. NOTE: The guide sensitivity setting ( GUIDANCE MENU ) will affect the displayed angle of the heading error line. SWATH NUMBERING All swaths are numbered and displayed on the top right hand side of the main screen. The setup swath is the middle number and is labelled "1" with swaths to the immediate right being labelled "+2", then "+3" and so on until "+200". The swath to the immediate left of the setup swath is labelled "-2" and so on until "-200". See the diagram below. The swath being driven is the swath number displayed in the middle of the window. See diagram below. After 20 seconds of driving to the swath the middle number will be highlighted indicating that it has been completed.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 19 Swaths can be completed in any order, including for example completing every second swath and on the return run completing the swaths left out, see the diagram on the next page. Once a swath has been completed and the next adjacent swath is started, the completed swath number will not be shown. However, if you turn onto the completed swath, its number will be displayed again and highlighted indicating that it has been completed. COMPLETED SWATHS When driving onto previously completed swaths, the number of the finished swaths will immediately appear highlighted. When you have finished a swath and drive to the next swath, the number of the next swath will appear in the middle of the top right hand side of the main screen. The number of the previously completed swath will disappear. LIGHT BAR OPTION

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 20 The optional light bar displays the cross track error and the direction needed to steer to come 'on track'. LIGHT BAR DISPLAY EXAMPLE < 0.2 "<" indicates to steer to the left to come on track. The current cross track error is 0.2m. REACTING TO GUIDANCE PROMPTS The two guidance prompts are cross track error and heading error information. HEADING CORRECTION To correct the heading error steer in the opposite direction to the direction of the error. That is steer towards the centre line. Straighten out when you see the error almost on the centre line. Repeat this procedure until the error disappears. CROSS TRACK ERROR CORRECTION Correct cross track error by steering towards the centre line. Straighten out when the error is close to zero. Repeat this procedure in smaller steps until the error is zero. IF USING A LIGHT BAR If using a light bar steer in the direction indicated by the arrow (> steer right, < steer left, > < on track hold wheel). When the error is almost zero straighten out. Symbol Steer Direction > RIGHT < LEFT >< HOLD EXAMPLES: In the diagram below the vehicle is to the left of the swath line and off course to the right. To correct this steer right and straighten out when the heading error is almost on/over the centre line. This will

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 21 correct the heading error and reduce the cross track error to the left. Alternatively, the driver could continue taking the same course and straighten out when the cross track error is near zero. LEFT HEADING ERROR The vehicle is to the left of the swath and has a heading error to the left (see below). To come on track the driver must steer to the right until a heading error to the right of the centre line appears. The driver should straighten out when the cross track error gets very close to zero, see below.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 22 RUNNING PARALLEL TO THE SWATH WITH CROSS-TRACK ERROR TO THE LEFT The vehicle has the correct heading (no heading error) but has a cross-track error to the left. In effect the vehicle is being driven along a line parallel to the swath but 1.7m to the left. To correct this the

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 23 driver must steer to the right until a heading error appears to the right of the centre line and then straighten out when the cross track error is very close to zero, see below FLAG FUNCTION

3500 VGS OPERATION Page 24 The flag function guides you back to the 'flag' position, which is a position that is stored in memory when the FLAG softkey is pressed. As soon as the FLAG softkey is pressed guidance to the flag position will start. The straight line distance to the 'flag position' and steering indications will be displayed. Steering indications are displayed by the line at the apex of the guidance triangle. At all times during flag the line at the apex of the triangle will show you the direction you must drive to return to the flag position. For example, if the line leans to the left you must turn to the left to return to the flag position. Once the FLAG softkey is pressed the word GUIDE will be displayed in its place. Pressing the GUIDE softkey will change the display back to swath guidance. The flag function is mostly used to resume work after refilling the tank. UNIT ON HOLD DURING FLAG! When the flag function has been engaged the unit will be put on hold. All logging to the data card will stop as will the accumulation of totals. FLAGGING A POSITION 1. Press the softkey below "FLAG", see diagram below. "GUIDE" will appear in its place. 2. Cross track and heading error will disappear and left/right steering indications (line at apex of triangle) and distance from the flag position will appear. See diagram on the next page for an example of the flag screen.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page As you drive away from the flag position the distance count will increase and the line at the apex of the triangle will indicate to turn. 4. To return to the flag position, follow the steering indications and the distance count. If the line at the apex of the triangle is vertical (no lean) and the distance count is decreasing then you are driving straight toward the flag position. 5. As you approach the flag position the distance count will decrease. Decrease your speed. Keep driving until the distance count reads close to 1m or less. NOTE: Due to GPS wander the distance count will never read exactly 0m. 6. Now at the flag position press the GUIDE softkey. 7. The guidance screen will return to normal. Cross track and heading error will be displayed. You are ready to resume work.

3500 VGS OPERATION Page MESSAGES The MESSAGES section displays alarm messages from the canlink. The size of the log file which data is being logged to is also shown (max size 2Mb). The shaded area of the usage indicator shows how much of the 2Mb log file has been used. NOTE: CANLINK LOG FILES When a log file reaches 2Mb in size logging to that file will stop. To activate a new log file turn the canlink on and off again. When more than one alarm is activated, alarm messages will be numbered and displayed by cycling through each message every 5 seconds. When the canlink has issued an alarm, pressing the alarm key will disable the audible alarm. The alarm message will continue to be displayed in the messages window until that alarm condition has been rectified. If the alarm key is pressed to disable the 5 second alarms and the unit is on hold an alarm will sound every 30 seconds to remind the operator that the unit is on hold. TURNING OFF THE BEEP AND SCROLLING THROUGH ALARM MESSAGES Pressing the ALARM key manually scrolls the user through each of the alarm messages and cancels the beep from the active alarms. LIST OF ALARM MESSAGES Below is an explanation of the various alarms that may be displayed. UNIT ON HOLD CARD REMOVED MC CARD FULL CARD ERROR FLASH ERROR This indicates that the canlink is in the On Hold state, no totals are being accumulated and no data is being logged. Indicates the data card has been removed and the unit will not log data. This message can also appear if the card is not inserted correctly. The NUDGE icon will then disappear and the canlink will compensate for the cross track error. See the screen below. DEMO AND GUIDE MODES Holding down the softkey under GUIDE for 3 seconds engages demo mode. Here the canlink will run a guidance simulation displaying simulated GPS co-ordinates and guidance prompts. To return the canlink to normal operation press and hold the DEMO softkey for 3 seconds.

3500 VGS CALIBRATION Page CLOCK/GPS (6) Selecting the CLOCK/GPS item brings up the GPS/CLOCK screen shown below. CLOCK/DATE To set, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to highlight the digit to be changed, then use the up and down arrow keys to change the highlighted digit. To toggle between time and date, use the top left softkey. GMT OFFSET Pressing the softkey corresponding to GMT OFFSET highlights the time zone offset. Use the arrow keys to set the correct value for your time zone. The time zone offset corrects the Greenwich mean time sent by the GPS so the unit will display the correct time. GPS Pressing the softkey adjacent to the GPS item allows the operator to enable/disable the GPS along with setting the GPS baud rate. The canlink must receive the GGA and VTG strings to determine position and speed.

3500 VGS CALIBRATION Page DATA CARD (7) Selecting the DATA CARD item from the calibration menu displays the data card screen shown below. The canlink will only work with MMC cards with a storage capacity of 128Mb only. MultiMedia CARD INFORMATION MultiMedia cards are a removable storage media currently being used by many devices such as digital cameras and digital voice recorders to record/store data. In the Windows environment using a USB card reader, multimedia cards act just like another hard drive, where files can be stored and removed. Even though, any file can be stored on a multimedia card, it is recommended that when using the MMC card to upload new software or log data there are only canlink related files (.sof and.log) on the card. Please read through the information below as it contains important information relating to the use of MMC data cards with different windows operating systems. INSERTING/REMOVING THE MMC CARD The MMC card can be inserted into the canlink at any time, even if the canlink is on or not. Never remove the MMC card when the canlink is on. The canlink will beep continuously telling you to insert the card into the canlink. Always switch off the canlink before removing the MMC card!

3500 VGS CALIBRATION Page 40 FORMATTING/INITIALIZING MMC cards can be formatted under windows, in "Windows Explorer". WINDOWS PLATFORMS When installing the "Motion Flash" card reader supplied by Farmscan another drive to read and write to the MMC card will be added to your system. In all Windows platforms (98, Me, 2000 and XP) data can be copied from and to the MMC card using "Windows Explorer". In all the Windows platforms except Windows 2000 the MMC data card can be simply inserted and removed after copying files from or to the MMC card. Please see the instructions below regarding removing data cards from the card reader in Windows REGARDING WINDOWS 2000 & REMOVING THE MMC CARD FROM THE PC. When removing MMC cards in Windows 2000 you must follow the procedure below for the canlink to read the MMC card. See instructions below. WINDOWS BEFORE REMOVING MMC CARD FROM CARD READER: 1.) In the system tray at the bottom of the screen (where the time is displayed) right click on the data card remove icon (data card with green arrow). 2.) Click on "Unplug or eject hardware". 3.) Click on "USB Storage-MMC" and then click the "Stop" button. 4.) The "Stop a Hardware Device" window will appear, make sure "USB Storage-MMC" is highlighted, then click the "Stop" button. 5.) A message telling you that it is now safe to remove the MMC card will appear. Click "Ok" and remove the MMC card from the card reader. ENABLE/DISABLE 1. Press the horizontal softkey adjacent to DATA CARD to highlight ENABLED/DISABLED. 2. Use the up and down arrow keys to toggle between ENABLED and DISABLED. NOTE: DATA CARD should be disabled if not using a data card. DATA CARD CAPACITY The storage capacity of the card is detected automatically. If no card has been inserted or there has been an error in reading the card, or "DATA CARD" is set to "DISABLED" then the data card capacity will be 0 MB.

3500 VGS CALIBRATION Page 41 LOG INTERVAL The log Interval determines how often data is written to the card, eg 1 second to 10 second intervals. Selecting a longer time interval will enable the operator to store information over a wider area in the one log file (maximum log file size 2Mb). 1. Press the softkey adjacent to LOG INTERVAL to select interval time. 2. Use the RHS up and down arrow keys to select an interval between 1 seconds and 10 seconds. HOW THE CANLINK LOGS DATA The canlink logs data in files. During data logging the canlink copies a log file onto the card. The log file is named GUI followed by the date (day and month) with the ".log" extension. For example "GUI2703A.log" is a log file created on the 27 th of March. The "A" means that it is the first log file created on the 27 th of March. Other log files created on the same day will be named "GUI2703B.log, GUI2703C.log etc. FULL LOG FILES The canlink will log data into a single file until the log file is 2Mb in size. To activate a new log file, turn the unit on and off again. When the current log file is 2Mb in size the memory bar indicator in the main screen will show full. TO INSERT THE DATA CARD 1. The MMC card is inserted into the front panel of the canlink with the label facing upward. 2. The MMC card can be inserted at anytime. When inserted the "CARD INITIALISING PLEASE WAIT" screen will be displayed. TO REMOVE THE DATA CARD 1. Always power off the canlink first then pull out the card. Note: If the operator removes the data card while the canlink is still on, a message "INSERT CARD NOW!!!" will be displayed. You must always power off the canlink before removing the card.

3500 VGS CALIBRATION Page 42 TO ERASE DATA CARD (NOT WHILE GUIDING!) The erase function deletes all log files stored on the MMC card. Any other files will not be erased. Do not erase card while guiding! 1. Press the vertical softkey under ERASE, the message HIT RESET will appear. 2. Press the RESET key to start the erase process. TIP: 1. An indicator will flash during card erase. 2. To ensure the erase operation has been successfully completed check that the MEMORY bar indicator is clear. 3. Make sure you have copied log files before erasing the card.
