1 How to install shaker motor in a LOTR standard edition What you need: 1. Shaker motor kit Stern Rev. B [ FP ] 2. LOTR v10.02 game ROM chip [ FP-GROM-LOTR v10.02] 3. LOTR shaker PAL chip [ FP-GAL16V8] 4. Shaker motor controller [ FP ] 5. LOTR v10.0 display ROM chip [ FP-DROM-LOTR] (optional) 6. 2 meters of 0,65mm 2 wire 7. Screws, plastic spacers, wire terminal connector and misc. tools Chip installations: 1. Turn off the game with the power switch. 2. Replace the old PAL chip at position U213 with the shaker PAL chip. a. Beware of the positioning of the chip! Check the notch and pin #1 dot carefully! 3. Replace the old game ROM chip at position U210 with the v10.02 game ROM chip. a. Beware of the positioning of the chip! Check the notch carefully! 4. If needed - replace the old display ROM chip at position U5 with the v10.0 display ROM chip. Check the notch carefully! This chip is located on your DMD controller board. 5. Turn on your game. Make sure the game boots up and that everything is working fine. a. If the game doesn't boot up, turn it off, remove your batteries, wait 30 seconds, and try again. Or reseat your game ROM. 6. Turn off the game with the power switch.

2 Shaker installation: 1. Install the shaker motor according to the instructions. Use the installation paper template for positional guidance. a. Make sure that the shaker motor cover will go free from the tilt pendulum so you can easily remove the cover without any hassle!

3 2. Install the interface board that came with the shaker kit. 3. Install the shaker motor controller. a. Use at least two plastic spacers and appropriate screws. b. It is easier to wire the controller before it is installed but make sure that you find a good spot for it first.

4 Wiring the shaker: 1. Locate the upper coin door switch and connect a wire to the top-most terminal via a terminal connector. This is the coin door interrupted 16 Volt AC power to the shaker. 2. This wire shall then be connected to the RED wire going to the 7-pin socket on the interface board. 3. Locate header J9 in the bottom part of the I/O power driver board located in the back box. 4. Press a wire in the empty slot at pin #5. This is the game controlled ground that activates the shaker. Be careful not to damage the connector housing! 5. This wire shall then be connected to the GRAY wire going to the 7-pin socket on the interface board.

5 6. Connect the RED wire coming from the 5-pin socket on the interface board to the Power + pin on the motor controller board. 7. Connect the BLACK wire coming from the 5-pin socket on the interface board to the Power - pin on the motor controller board. 8. Connect the RED wire coming from the shaker motor to the Motor + pin on the motor controller board. 9. Connect the BLACK wire coming from the shaker motor to the Motor - pin on the motor controller board.

6 Checking the installation: 1. Check that everything is installed in a way so it is not interfering with brackets etc. when the playfield is lowered into the game.

7 2. Check, and double check, that everything is wired correctly. 3. Here is a full wiring diagram. 8 Configuration and running the game 1. There is no in-game configuration that needs attention. 2. Set the motor controller knob to 50% as a base setting. You can later adjust the intensity of the shaker to your liking by turning this knob. 3. Turn on your game and play to enjoy the shakes! Other considerations 1. Random callouts a. Stern released a service bulletin (#157) about upgrading sound software on the Whitestar platforms. If you get random call outs during attract mode, you need a sound update. The ROM can be downloaded from their site. Here is the service bulletin instructions: b. The only caution is that Stern is not very specific about when the process is done. "Wait for LED1 to start flashing continuously (this indicates flash procedure was successful). Note: This usually takes a few minutes." During the upgrade, the LED1 flashes irregularly, providing feedback that the upgrade is in progress. But at one point the LED1 will probably start to flash continuously, but it is fairly slow - perhaps one flash per second. Please be patient! After some time irregular flashes will resumed. When finished, the "continuous flashing" is quite rapid. 2. Missing transistor a. On some late produced standard LOTR games there is a missing transistor at position Q12 on the I/O power driver board. If it is missing a new transistor (STP20N10L) needs to be installed (soldered).
