1 MEIJI METALLURGICAL MICROSCOPE STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE Purpose of this Instrument: This instrument is for illuminating solid specimens to identify, inspect and measure features of interest. Location: White Hall 410 Cleanroom Primary Staff Contact: Harley Hart (412) (M) (304) (O) Office: White Hall 409 Secondary Staff Contact: The Shared Research Facilities are operated for the benefit of all researchers. If you encounter any problems with this piece of equipment, please contact the staff member listed above immediately. There is never a penalty for asking questions. If the equipment is not behaving exactly the way it should, contact a staff member. WARNING: Disconnect power cord when cleaning or making any repairs to instrument.
2 INSTRUMENT START UP 1. Reserve the equipment in CORES and login using the CORES kiosk in the Cleanrom Entry Lab. 2. Sign into the logbook at the instrument. 3. Turn on microscope lamp power by moving the toggle switch on the right hand side of the base to the ON position see Figure 1. Figure 1: Power switch 4. Adjust the eyepiece by folding the two view pieces together or spreading them apart to match your eye spacing. When set correctly the user will see one round, focused field of view when viewing the sample see Figure 2. Figure 2: Eyepieces MICROSCOPE OPERATION 1. Place sample onto stage and secure using clips if necessary. 2. Verify that 5x objective is the objective in use. If this the case, rotate objective carousel to until the 5x objective is the objective in use see Figure 3. 1
3 NOTE: When not in use the objective must be at 5x magnification. White Hall Metallurgical Microscope Figure 3: Objective carousel 3. Adjust the distance between the stage and the objective by turning the stage height adjustment knob. WARNING: Always be aware of the sample s position in relation to the objective. Crashing the stage into the objective will result in damage to the instrument 4. While looking through the eyepieces, focus on the sample by turning the coarse and fine focus adjustment knobs accordingly. CAPTURING IMAGE 1. Ensure that the Light Path Selector Knob on the microscope is retracted and not in the light path. 2. Log onto desktop under your WVUSRF account. If desktop is not turned on, click the power button on the computer below the microscope USERNAME: User dependent PASSWORD: User dependent 3. Select the Infinity Analyze icon on the Windows 8 desktop. 2
4 4. Position the sample on the stage so an image of the sample can be viewed clearly on the screen. 5. To capture the image, select File Capture. 6. Once the image is captured, a new window will be generated on the Infinity Analyze program. SAVING FILE 1. Verify that the window that contains your captured image is selected. 2. On the desktop select FileSave As from the drop down menu. 3. For the first time user, create a folder with your name under the SRF USER folder located on the desktop. Save files in your folder. NOTE: Do NOT use a USB storage device to save images. Save the image to the desktop and it to your WVU account. TURNING OFF THE SYSTEM 1. Remove the sample from the stage. 2. Set the objective carousel to the 5X position. 3. Set the microscope s POWER SWITCH to the off position. 4. Clean up the work area and make sure that all requested parameters have been entered into the logbook. 5. Logout of the CORES system using the CORES Kiosk software using the barcode scanner in the Cleanroom Entry Lab. NOTE: If any issues with the instrument were observed, the user must send a detailed to the appropriate SRF staff member explaining the issue observed. The words PROBLEM REPORT must appear in the subject heading. 3
