XIV Solution Architecture Each logical volume is spread across all drives Data is cut into 1MB partitions or chunks and stored on the disks XIV s distribution algorithm automatically distributes partitions across all disks in the system Even data distribution ensures balanced performance Completely automated process No hot spots even disk utilization No tuning Hardware can be added/removed Performance automatically rebalanced 5

Data is automatically redistributed as necessary when hardware changes If hardware is added ( phased in ), temporary 3 rd copy partitions from all drives are made on the new hardware--and then some partitions from all drives are deleted Only actual data is copied All workloads and hosts automatically receive performance benefit from new hardware Data Module 1 Data Module 2 Data Module 3 Data Node Module [ hardware upgrade ]

Data is automatically redistributed as necessary when hardware changes If hardware fails, the 2 nd copies of partitions that were on the failed hardware are used to rebuild partitions across all drives that are operational Writing from all drives to all drives at high priority Only partitions with data need to be copied If hardware is phased out, temporary 3 rd copy partitions are created across all drives that will remain in the system Only partitions with data need to be copied [ hardware failure ] Data Module 1 Data Module 2 Data Module 3 Data Module 4 7

XIV Drive Rebuilds XIV rebuilds are optimized to exploit system resources dynamically XIV can rebuild a 6 TB drive in less than one hour on average Upon detecting I/O idle time, the rebuild technology dynamically uses more system resources High reliability and business continuity for your customers business Minutes XIV Drive Rebuild Time* TB 3TB 4TB 6TB v *Times represent 100% capacity used

XIV SSD Extended Cache Secondary read cache for block sizes <=64K Transparent extended read cache, not a separate tier No change to system usable capacity Zero management, zero tuning Read misses (not found in primary cache) <=64K will be added to SSD Real-time cache algorithm (not policy-based) Performance improvement begins immediately Host Servers SSD added to each module Scales with the system 6 to 15 SSD drives 400 GB (2.4TB to 6TB) for all systems 800 GB (4.8TB to 12TB) for 4TB and 6TB drive systems All Gen3 hardware is SSD-ready (simple, nondisruptive field upgrade) Gen3 only Hot swap - can be phased out, tested, replaced and phased in No mirroring of data on SSD data is already redundant Enabled at the system level by default DRAM Cache SSD Cache Disks 9

XIV Feature Set Powerful snapshots mechanism Space-efficient, redirect on write Remote mirroring for business continuity Both synchronous and asynchronous, three way mirror Data migration Transfer volumes onto XIV with minimal disruption to applications Thin Provisioning Intrinsic to the XIV architecture Data at rest encryption Allows data in place to be encrypted Quality of Service Multi Tenancy Real time compression Hyper-Scale Mobility Move volumes from one XIV Gen3 to another with no downtime Hyper-Scale Consistency 10

XIV Encryption Overview Data at rest encrypted by Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) All drive sizes are now SED SSD cache is encrypted for end-to-end encryption Hot encrypt support Allows for concurrently encrypting client data All currently shipping drives are SED 2 and 3 TB boxes ordered before Oct 2013 are not SED XIV software needed to enable encryption - V11.4 External Key server required: Secure Key Lifecycle Manager (SKLM) Standard KMIP v1.0 key management via RPQ XIV with encrypting disks + CPU based SSD encryption Write encrypted data to the SSD 11

XIV Quality of Service (QoS) Overview Optional to ensure performance for critical applications by limiting performance of lower priority hosts or applications (e.g. Test/Dev) accessing the same XIV system Up to 500 performance classes limiting IOPs, MBs or both is created Two type of classes: Hosts Pools/Domains Maximum IOPs/BW for class is shared among all objects in a class Objects outside performance classes are not limited by QoS Immediate, dynamic changes Movement into/out of a performance class Maximum IOPs and/or BW specifications for performance class An I/O is limited by the maximum limit, not an aggregate 12

XIV Multi Tenancy Overview Division of the system's resources into domains Up to 120 domains can be defined A domain represents a subset of the system's resources Users, pools, hosts/clusters, targets The domain restricts the resources a user can manage A domain administrator is a user who is associated with a domain Restricted to performing operations on objects associated with a specific domain No visibility between domains The domain administrator is not informed of resources outside the domain - these resources are neither displayed on lists, nor are their relevant events or alerts displayed A user can have a domain administrator role in more than one domain Storage, security, and application administrators, as well as read-only users, retain their right to perform the same operations that they have in a nondomain-based environment Quality of Service can be set independently for each domain Tenant A Admin Tenant B Admin Tenant C Admin 13

XIV Compression Overview XIV supports inline, real-time data compression Main features Transparent to host Uses same RACE technology that is already utilized in Spectrum Virtualize and Storwize family Uses XIV grid architecture to balance workload, provide performance and resiliency Applied per volume for new volumes and supports in place conversion of existing volumes Implemented above the cache so all data in SSD and data being mirrored (sync or async) is compressed Comprestimator functionality built into the GUI for ease of use of existing XIV clients Administrator has ability to over allocate XIV 14

Leveraging the power of the XIV grid An XIV software node, encapsulating the IBM RTC RACE engine Runs on every module, to distribute and scale compression Exchanging uncompressed data with XIV Interface Nodes (I-Nodes) Above cache architecture Cache and SSD-cache compression >> More data cached, more cache hits Mirroring Replicating compressed data, reducing bandwidth consumption Between compressed volumes: Data is compressed only once Uncompressed I-Node Compressed Compressed DISK 15
