1 Lakewood, W The Control We must provide a way of controlling the flow of electricity between the power source and the load. There are many forms of buttons and release mechanisms, but for this class we will go over the products that ROFU carries. From a simple mechanical device such as a toggle switch to a complex electrical device such as a fingerprint reader, they all break or make the electrical circuit. Here are brief descriptions of 3 possible choices for a switch: Unrestricted use: The use of this device is free to all who wish to gain access through a particular opening. s is obvious with the mechanical controls, no degree of authority is needed to operate them. Controls such as break glass and pull stations are free to be operated by anyone but by their nature of their operation are meant to discourage their use for releasing a lock or other sort of emergency. Unrestricted electronic controls would be programmed to release a lock whenever a person entered an area in close proximity to the opening. Installed on the secure side of the opening. Restricted use: This device requires that a person has authorization to do so before they could activate or deactivate a system. They would need to know a code, have a key, a proximity card or a like device to gain access to the opening. Some of today s high- security devices even require verification of the user through such personal identification as a fingerprint, voice or retina recognition. utomatic control: ny device that releases a lock according to some pre-programmed condition is an automatic control. In mechanical controls, a switch might be wired in such a manner as to lock or un-lock a door whenever another door or piece of equipment was used. These situations are used in X-Ray rooms, Interlocks (man-traps), and elevator door controls. Terminology used when specifying a CONTROL NO: Normally Open. The circuit will be open until the switch actuator is operated. NC: Normally closed. The circuit will be closed until the switch actuator is operated. : s soon as the button is released it returns to its previous state. Holding the button down will either make or break the circuit, depending on if you wired the NC or NO contacts. Maintained: est described as a push/pull action, similar to a light switch. Pushing the button in and it will maintain this position until it is pushed again (like a light switch). SPST: single pole, single throw. The switch has only one moving contact and one stationary contact; it is either normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC). : single pole, double throw. The switch has one moving contact and two stationary contacts (NO & NC); when operated, the contacts reverse states. DP: double pole. It is available in single throw and double throw configurations; it allows for two separate circuits to be opened simultaneously from one switch. D: double breaking. This type of configuration (form X, Y, Z) provides the same circuits as Form, and C except that when activated, the pole makes or breaks a circuit from two contact points. Form Z can be converted to form C by adding a jumper to one side. 1
2 Lakewood, W Contact Forms: SPST-NO (Form ) SPST-NO-D (Form X) SPST-NC (Form ) SPST-NC-D (Form Y) (Form C) -D (Form Z) DPST-NO (Form ) DPST-NO-D (Form XX) DPST-NC (Form ) DPST-NC-D (Form YY) DPDT (Form CC) DPDT-NC-D (Form ZZ) 2
3 Lakewood, W Common Contact Forms: SPST-NO: Single pole, single throw, normally open switch keeps circuit - open. This could be used in a system with a fail secure device. When the switch is operated, contact closes, completing circuit -. Electricity would flow to the device causing it to release. SPST-NC SPST-NC: Single pole, single throw, normally closed switch keeps circuit - closed. This could be used in a system with a fail safe device. When the switch is operated, contact opens, breaking the circuit -. Electricity would cease to flow to lock, causing it to release. SPST-NO : Single pole, double throw switch provides a closed circuit, - and an open circuit, -C. This could be used in systems with a fail safe device in circuit - and a light in circuit -C. When the switch is operated, circuit - opens, releasing the device and circuit -C closed, turning the light on. The device and light would have to be rated at the same voltage. C X -D (Form Z) -D: Single pole, double throw, form Z switch provides two separate circuits one closed (-) and one open (X-Y). This switch could operate the same as a system (above), except that the device and light could be different voltages. Each circuit is totally separate and could be wired to two different low voltage power supplies. Y C X DPDT DPDT: Double pole, double throw switch provides a set of NO and NC contact for controlling two separate circuits. The swingers of each contact set are mechanically attached together, as indicated by the dotted line (Not to be confused with a Double, which are independent). Whenever the switch is operated, both contact sets change position simultaneously. When shown on a drawing, the contact set may be drawn in separate locations for convenience. They will be identified as belonging to one switch; that is; the switch may be labeled S1 and the contact sets labeled S1- and S1-. Y Z 3
