-1- GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Legrain PCI is a computerized powdered milk feeder that uses RFID (Radio frequency Identification) tags for calf identification; this allows the operator to control the feed plan for each calf individually while the calves are group housed. With the Legrain PCI, you can now have heifer replacement calves and or beef fattening calves of all ages fed on the same machine, while giving them an appropriate individualized diet. Legrain PCI is easy to calibrate. Once calibrated the machine mixes the feed you want for each animal, it calculates and the amount of water and powder that each of your animals requires for the feed plan that has been programmed. It will wash the bowls of the machine automatically at pre set intervals per day. With the addition of the external powder hopper, the Legrain PCI allows you to have two powders of different qualities and two different diet plans for a period of up to twenty weeks. Legrain PCI with 2 stations can feed up to 60 calves. Each animal can be rationed differently. You can give them a mixture of water and powder, with a different concentration. You can add an extra pump to include individually other liquid components, such as vitamins, Optional extra. This manual is divided into three parts: SECTION A includes a general description of the system and an explanation of the method of rationing. This section concludes with an

example of the operation that should help you become familiar with the operation of the system. -2- SECTION B explains in detail all the possible operations to be performed with the Legrain PCI. SECTION C consists of a series of questions and answers to help in case of problems.

-3- SECTION A Ration method FEED CREDITS Legrain PCI uses a new technology to feed your calves. The machine best tries to replicate how the cows produce milk for their young. The milk is not produced all at once, but small even amounts all though day. The calf is naturally rationed because of the milking ability of the cow. Legrain PCI allows you to mix a fresh feed for each animal on an individual feed programme. You can choose the maximum daily amount and concentration of the powdered milk supplied by the machine (see Section B-2 EDIT). Legrain PCI allows the calf to drink only when its feed credit equalizes the amount of milk that the machine can provide in a cycle. This amount can be changed by the user (see Section B-9 OPTION 7-volume mixture). The machine mixes up feed sizes of 500ml or ½ a litre. The credit of each animal remaining at the end of the day can either be carried over to the next day or deleted and the calf starts the new day with only its pre set quantity. (see OPTION SECTION B-9 9-day credit). THE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM AND THE THREE BOWLS The Legrain PCI has a maximum of two feed stations with identification tag reader in each. The Feed station identification reader includes an FDX-B antenna for reading the identification ear tag.

When an animal with a tag enters the station, the antenna reads the ear tags unique frequency. The ear tag must be placed in ear which is the same side as the reader is mounted in the feed station. -4- The calf s ear tag must first be registered to the machine (see Section B- 3 ADD). Otherwise the Legrain PCI will be unable to recognize the animal. Once registered, an animal may feed from either Station 1 or Station 2. The Legrain P.C.I feeder has a unique three bowl system. The main mixing bowl is larger than the other two. This is where the powdered milk is mixed with warm water. The feed is mixed and then transferred by a pump system to one of two distribution bowls. Bowl No. 1 is closest to the main mixing bowl and bowl No 2 is to the right of the machine. Each bowl is dedicated to supply 1 feed station. Legrain PCI computer has a number to identify each of the mixing bowls. The main mixing bowl is No. 99, Bowl No. 1 is No. 91 and bowl No. 2 is No. 92. You can easily examine mixtures of these three bowls (see REVIEW SECTION B-7). Be careful never to use these numbers as 91, 92 or 99 as calf numbers. So when the ear tag is detected the calf feed programme will be the default settings used as the basis for this new animal. Legrain PCI enables you to modify the data of all your calves (see OPTION SECTION B-9-8 Change the default). Using the bowls 1 or 2 in the rationing mode with a registered ear tag will mix the quality and quantity of milk according to the feed programme entered for that animal. Using the bowls 1 or 2 in Ad Lib mode will mix up milk for each distribution bowl every time the milk level drops below the level of the

probe (see Section B-9-13 OPTION Use bowls). Legrain PCI takes into account the total number of mixes and / or distributed to each bowl (99, 91 and 92) and each animal (1-60) see REVIEW SECTION B-7) EXPLANATION OF POWER PLANS Legrain PCI can change the quantity and quality of the mixture of each animal, automatically every 7 days, following the feed plan that you enter. Legrain PCI uses two 20-week plans that can be programmed with different quality and quantity of mixture for each week. You change plans in the same way that the input data for each calf (see OPTION SECTION B-9-4 Power Plan). Once you have entered the quantity and quality of the mixture for each week in all the plans that you used, you can give a calf a position on this plan (see Section B-2 Select EDIT-week plan X X). Legrain PCI will copy the quality and quantity of the mixture of the plan and the week chosen for the animal to which it was awarded. After the animal is the machine for seven days, and every seven days after that, the quality and quantity of the next week in a row will be copied.

-6- WEANING The way the Legrain PCI weans the calf is to reduce the amount every 7 days over several weeks, rather than in an abrupt manor at the end of the programme. Naturally a calf would be weaned of the cow over a few weeks to encourage it to eat hard food. By using this method the calf is not even aware that is even being weaned and little or growth check will occur. For example, Grams per ltr 130 Ltrs per Day 5 No of Weeks 8 Ltrs per day gms per day gms per week Kgs per week Week Week Week Week Week Week Week Week Total amount of milk powder per calf 27.3 The feed plan should start with the amount of milk powder solids you want each calf to have up to weaning. Then decide at what age you want to wean the calf.

The operator can then formulate an individual feed plan. Some examples are included at the back of this manual. -7- MECHANISM CONTROLLED BY Legrain P.C.I. 11 -8 - GENERAL USE OF THE LEGRAIN P.C.I. The instrument panel includes a keyboard, a screen and a selection list (laminated card to keep close to the machine). The keyboard includes number keys 0 to 9. These are used to choose a selection (1 to 9) and to enter the quantities needed to operate the machine. The [*] is used to return to normal operation of the machine or the comma decimal numbers. The [<-] is used to tell LOUVE PCI to accept your answer, and / or to see the next screen. The [c] is used to clear a fault input. To make a selection, press the corresponding number on the keypad (1-9), and enter the number of the desired selection. If after 10 minutes, you have not validated your registration, Legrain PCI automatically returns to normal operation except for the screen tests. When an animal is drinking, Legrain PCI shows on the screen its identification number.

-9 - START OPERATION After properly installing the machine (see the user manual of the machine) and make sure the thermostat is set at zero, connect the electrical power and water supply to the machine. The Legrain PCI will automatically start to fill the water tank if it is empty. Once the water tank is full, follow the explanations below to start your system: Check the time; see OPTION 9-11 set the time on the computers clock. Calibrate the water pump. See 5-1 Water CALIBRATE Calibrate the powder motor A. See 5 CALIBRATE A-2 Powder If you have a second external hopper, calibrate the powder motor B If you give a liquid product, calibrate the pump. See 5-3 CALIBRATE Auxiliary. (For 8 MODIFY DEFAULT, you can enter a quality and quantity of milk that will be saved with each new loop.) Repeat the following for each different powder used with Legrain PCI. 7. You need to inform Legrain PCI ear tag reader you will use the restricted feed control. See 3 ADD. You can then: 10. Modify the information specific to this animal (eg, position on the feed plan). 2 See CHANGE. Register each calf s ear tag and enter a number to identify it to the computer (usually the last 4 digits of its ear tag). Legrain PCI is now ready to feed you calves.

-32- ANY PROBLEM, REPLY TO YOUR QUESTIONS Problem: Legrain PCI does not give the right concentration of powder for my animals. Answer: Did you calibrate the machine? See SECTION B - 5 CALIBRATE Did you enter the data for this animal? See SECTION B - CHANGE 2 Problem: I want to adjust the scraper over the hopper, but I fear that the Auger starts. Answer: Never should you get your hands in the powder hopper to retrieve a fallen object with the bag of powder or in any part of the machine (eg mixing bowl) while the machine is on and / Legrain PCI is in normal operation. See SECTION B - 9 OPTION - 1 Switch off the device. Problem: LEGRAIN INC does not read a loop when I try to add it. Answer: Observe the correct orientation of the loop or a good station See SECTION B - ADD 3 Problem: I have calibrated the water, but I never get the same flow. Answer: You should, at startup, to operate each engine calibration function to fill the water pipes or powder tubes, prior to calibration that you will weigh and enter.

-33- Problem: I try to change the concentration of powder to an animal, but LEGRAIN PCI does not accept it. Answer: You must press ACCEPT to accept your entry LEGRAIN PCI. If LEGRAIN PCI waits more than 10 minutes before you press a button, the machine will automatically return to normal running. In this case, all the data you just modified will be forgotten. You should at least return to the first screen of normal operation. See SECTION B - CHANGE 2 Problem: Some motors are not working properly, or the nipple of the second station is a movement back and forth for no reason, the boiler will not fill. Answer: Check SECTION B - OPTION 9-13 and 3 type of machine used. Problem: I want to calibrate the auxiliary pump, but the main draw is no immediate trigger of the pump. Answer: You must first open the auxiliary pump function (see OPTION 9-6 Work with auxiliary). Attention, all data of this function is immediately introduced in all datas already registered (file veal, plan).

-34- TRAINING THE ANIMALS Animals can be transferred to the machine after they have consumed sufficient colostrum. Teach the calves to drink from the LEGRAIN PCI by showing them the teat and encouraging them to drink by positioning their mouths around the teat. In some cases switching the machine to ad-lib during this time can help. Watch the calves for the first few days to assure that they are suckling. In the next few days, it is not necessary to force the animals to feed; unless a calf has not fed from the LEGRAIN PCI or missed three or more feeds, it will come back to feed again when it is hungry, and it will not be necessary for you to intervene. All you have to do is check and be sure that all the animals have fed from the machine.
