The Disk Drive Snap Server 4100 To install the new disk drive properly, follow the procedure carefully. Failure to follow instructions puts your data at risk. These preparatory steps assist you in completing the replacement procedure correctly. 1 Back up the data on your server. This step is required to protect your data adequately. 2 If you have Snap OS version 3.2 or earlier, upgrade to Snap OS 3.4, available from our Web site. 3 Once the data has been properly backed up and you have upgraded to Snap OS 3.4, identify and replace the defective drive by following the steps in this chapter. Identifying a Failed Disk Drive The Snap Server is factory-configured with all 4 disk drives as part of a RAID 5 array. If a disk drive fails, the corresponding drive LED on the front of the server flashes amber. To check disk drive status: 1 Use a Web browser to display the Snap Server Home page. (See your Administrator Guide for instructions.) 2 To display the Administration Home page, click the Administration link. (You may need to provide the Administrator password.) 3 To display the Disk Utilities page, click Disk Utilities. 4 Click the View Disk Status link. If the disk drives are configured as a RAID-5 array and functioning properly, you should see a single RAID-5 disk, with this icon:, and the status should read OK. Field Service Documentation 1

Identifying a Failed Disk Drive Snap Server If the status of the RAID-5 disk is BROKEN, check the disk status page for an orphan disk icon. The red orphan disk icon indicates that the failed disk drive is still accessible by the system and may not need to be replaced. This problem can occur when there is a loose cable to one disk drive. Open the server and check the cables to the affected disk drive. If you find a loose cable and reattach it, reconfigure the orphan disk as a spare. For instructions on checking the cables, see Checking for Loose Cables on page 5. If there is no orphan disk, you must replace the failed disk drive. 6 To determine which disk drive has failed, use a Web browser to connect to the Server Debug page at this address: where snap_server is the name or IP address of the Snap Server In the Command box on the Server Debug page, type info device and click OK. A list of the functioning disk drives appears, as shown on the next page. Look for a logical device labeled RAID5 Large data protection disk. The list should show that the logical device is made up of 4 partitions (drives) with the following partition numbers: You can assume that a disk drive that does not appear on this list has failed. Make a note of the failed disk drive s partition number (see the second screen for an example). 2 Field Service Documentation

Snap Server 4100 Identifying a Failed Disk Drive You use it to identify the disk drive after you have opened up the Snap Server case. A properly functioning system shows 4 partitions (disk drives). A system with disk drive failure shows a RAID CRACKED message. Partition/drive is missing. Field Service Documentation 3

Opening the Case Snap Server 4100 Opening the Case To replace a failed component, you need to open the Snap Server case. Caution There are high voltages inside the Snap Server. Always disconnect the power cable from any power source BEFORE opening the case. There are staticsensitive electronics inside the Snap Server. Make sure that you are working at a static-controlled workstation, and that you are properly grounded before handling any internal parts. To open the case: 1 Turn off the power on the server. 2 Unplug the AC power cord from the wall. 3 Loosen the 2 thumb screws at the rear of the top cover. 4 Slide the top cover toward the rear of the server until the rear edge can be lifted. 5 Lift the rear edge of the top cover and slide it toward the rear of the server until it can be lifted off of the server. 4 Field Service Documentation

Snap Server 4100 Locating a Failed Disk Drive Locating a Failed Disk Drive The disk drive map label on top of the power supply shows the physical location of the disk drive numbers. (If you do not know the number of the failed disk drive, see Identifying a Failed Disk Drive on page 1.) Disk Drive Map Drive Power supply Fan Drive Fan Front Drive Drive Motherboard Back Checking for Loose Cables If you have determined that the problem is an orphan disk drive that is operating properly but is disconnected from the RAID 5 array (see Identifying a Failed Disk Drive on page 1), you may be able to correct the problem by correcting loose connections to the problem disk drive. 1 Open the Snap Server case as described in Opening the Case on page 4. 2 Locate the failed disk drive as described in Locating a Failed Disk Drive on page 5. 3 Remove and reseat the ATA ribbon cable and the power cable connected to the problem disk drive. 4 Replace the cover. Field Service Documentation 5

Replacing a Disk Drive Snap Server If you reseated a loose cable in step 3, reconfigure the problem disk as described in Rebuilding the RAID Array on page 11. Replacing a Disk Drive Caution Disk drives are precision equipment. Handle them carefully, as any metalto-metal contact while handling them could result in loss of data and/or reduce the useful life of the disk drive. 1 Open the Snap Server case, as described in Opening the Case on page 4. 2 Locate the failed disk drive as described in Locating a Failed Disk Drive on page 5. 3 Using a 7-mm nut driver, remove the nut that attaches the drive bracket to the chassis. Set the nut aside for use later when installing the drive replacement. 4 Gently lift the front of the failed drive (located near the threaded chassis stud), slide the drive toward the front of the server, and then lift the drive out. Caution Be careful not to let the bracket touch the other disk drives while lifting it out of the server. 5 Carefully remove the ATA ribbon cable and the power cable from the failed disk drive. 6 Lay the drive upside down on a grounded, padded surface. 7 Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the 4 screws that attach the bracket to the failed disk drive. Note the orientation of the bracket and carefully remove it. Set the screws aside for use when you attach the bracket to the replacement disk drive. 8 Take the Overland Storage supplied Hard Drive Field Replacement Unit out of its package. 9 Set the jumpers on the replacement disk drive to configure the drive as a master. Each drive has a diagram on its label indicating the master and slave jumper settings. See the diagram for the jumper settings of the drive you are installing. If the drive is not already a master, configure the jumper settings to make it one. 10 Carefully place the bracket on the replacement drive in the correct orientation. 11 Using the 4 Phillips screws, attach the bracket to the replacement drive and make sure the screws are securely fastened. 6 Field Service Documentation

Snap Server 4100 Replacing the Cover 12 Gently slide the drive bracket into position, aligning the tabs on the chassis into the slots on the bracket. 13 Slide it in until the tabs are fully engaged with the slots, and lower the front end of the bracket over the threaded stud in the chassis. 14 Reattach the nut to the threaded stud, and tighten it. 15 Connect the ATA ribbon cable from the motherboard to the new disk drive. 16 Make sure that the cable is securely seated in the drive. 17 Connect the power cable to the new disk drive. 18 Again, make sure that the cable is securely seated in the drive. 19 Replace the cover on the Snap Server as described in Replacing the Cover on page 7. Replacing the Cover To replace the cover after servicing the Snap Server: 1 Slide the cover from the rear of the server toward the front, making sure that the front lip of the chassis hooks into the slot in the front edge of the cover. 2 Tighten the 2 thumb screws until they are snug. 3 Plug in the AC power and turn on the server. Caution There are high voltages inside the Snap Server. Always replace the cover BEFORE connecting the power cable to any power source. Checking Drive Partition Size 1 Once you have replaced the top cover and powered up the server, use a Web browser to log into the Administration page of your Snap Server. For more detailed instructions, see your Administrator Guide. 2 To connect to the Server Debug page, enter the following in the browser address line: where snap_server is the name or IP address of your Snap Server. 3 Press Enter. This brings up the Server Debug page. 4 In the Command box, type info device and click OK. Field Service Documentation 7

Checking Drive Partition Size Snap Server 4100 The partition information for each drive slot is displayed. 5 Compare the sizes (in KB) of the public partitions of each of the 4 drives. If the Single disk has a partition greater than or equal to the other 3 drives, as shown in the screen below, proceed to Rebuilding the RAID Array on page 11. If, as shown in the next screen, the Single disk partition size does not match the other 3 drives, and its partition size is smaller than the rest of the drives, proceed to Reconfiguring the Replacement Drive s Partition Size on page 9 to configure the drive correctly for the server. 8 Field Service Documentation

Snap Server 4100 Reconfiguring the Replacement Drive s Partition Size Example: for existing drives and for the replacement drive shows the replacement drive is smaller than the other drives. The Single disk partition size is smaller than the other drives in the RAID set. You must reconfigure the drive before it can join the RAID set. Reconfiguring the Replacement Drive s Partition Size 1 Using the table below, identify the Logical Device ID that belongs to the replacement drive you have just inserted into the Snap Server. For details of each drive s physical location, see the diagram on page 5. Physical Drive Location Logical Device ID Drive Drive Drive Drive It is important to have the correct Logical Device ID. Double-check to be sure of the correct the Logical Device ID for the drive that has been replaced. Field Service Documentation 9

Reconfiguring the Replacement Drive s Partition Size Snap Server In the command line type the following exactly as it appears: config device format 100XX /reinit /nocore where 100XX (followed by a space) is the Logical Device ID you identified in step 1, above. Note It is important to leave one space after the Logical Device ID and another after the reinit command. 3 You should see: The requested operation will be executed after the next reboot. If this message does not appear, 3 possibilities exist: If you entered the wrong Logical Device ID in step 2, a message appears below the command line indicating an error. Repeat step 2, using the correct Logical Device ID. If you made a random typing error in step 2, a message appears below the command line indicating an error. Repeat step 2, correcting the typing error. You omitted the space after the Logical Device ID and/or the space after the reinit command. In this case the drive reformats with an incorrect partition size. When the drive finishes reformatting, you must repeat step 2 and include both spaces. 4 In the Command box, type reboot and click OK. The Snap Server reboots and reinitializes the drive to the correct partition size. 5 When all disk activity stops, repeat the procedure in Checking Drive Partition Size on page 7 to verify that the Single disk partition size is greater than or equal to the other 3 drives in the RAID set. 10 Field Service Documentation

Snap Server 4100 Rebuilding the RAID Array See the next screen for an example. The replacement drive s partition size is The RAID set partition size is This is a good configuration. Now go on to Rebuilding the RAID Array. Rebuilding the RAID Array Using a Web browser, go to the Snap Administration page and click Disk Utilities. 1 Click Configure Disk, and then select Create a Disk Configuration. The only option available should be Spare. Caution If there is more than one drive to choose at this time, stop and contact Overland Storage Technical Support. Failure to do this may put your data at risk. If there is only one drive to choose, continue to step 2, below. 2 Select the option Spare and select the replacement drive to configure as the spare. Click Next, and then click Finish on the next page. The Snap Server may or may not reboot. In either case, the server incorporates the spare into the RAID array and automatically rebuilds the array. If the system still has not accepted your replacement drive into the RAID array, contact Overland Storage Technical Support. Field Service Documentation 11
