3 Section 1: Introduction Wavelength Technology Singapore Pte. Ltd. The Motorized Beam Expander offers an expansion range from 1x to 8x. This Motorized Beam Expander preserved all optical properties as manual zoom expander while offering fully motorized adjustment. This Motorized Beam Expander is designed for an alignment of zoom and divergence to facilitate adjustments on the Beam Expander. This means that manual adjustment will be avoided and it can be remotely done. With the Motorized Beam Expander, the alignment of the laser beam expansion and the divergence position of your optical system can be remotely adjusted. This can be done by two separate lens groups which are moved by two step-motors. A separated electronic control module and software have been developed for this purpose. The software allows user to change the beam expansion of your optical system. The lens groups will move automatically to their pre-set position. Independent movements of the lens groups are also made possible to create any desired variation of your laser beam size. The connection between controller and computer is made via a standard USB-RS232 cable. While connection between controller and beam expander is made via a standard 15-pins parallel cable. The operating voltage of the controller is DC 9V. Section 4: Hardware Installation 1. Do not make any installation while laser is in operation. 2. Connect the Control Module to Beam Expander by using the provided 15-pins parallel cable. 3. Connect the Control Module to a power supply of 9V input voltage. DO NOT switch it on at this moment. 4. Plug in the RS232 serial cable to the control module. DO NOT plug in the USB cable to PC until finish software installation. 5. Ensure all the connections are properly connected before switching on the Control Module. 4

Insert the installation CD into your CD drive. 2. Start installation by clicking the "Motor Controller Installation Setup". 3. Click "Next" when come to the window as below; Please accept the terms in the license agreement. 5

6 4. Key in the User Name and Organization, then click "Next". 5. Select the Complete Setup Type then proceed by clicking "Next". 6. Click "Install" when come to the window as below. 6

7 7. Click "finish" to complete the installation. 8. Plug in the USB cable to PC and switch on the Control Module. 9. Window will automatically install the device driver software upon plugging in the USB cable. 10. Upon completion, a window as below will notify user that the Comm Port (COM12)* has been successfully established and ready to use. 11. In case the device driver software could not initiate automatically, please install the "PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1210" in the installation CD. 12. For old version of Window, you may have to install the "vcredist_x86". 7

8 Port Setting If you could not find the COM number, you may get it at the following directory path. Control Panel >> Device Manager >> Ports (Drop it down for sub-directory) >> Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM12)* * Port Number may different as illustrated in the manual since it is assigned by PC. Note: The port number will be different whenever re-plugging in the USB cable. User may need to enter the port number for later software configuration. 8

9 Running the Motorized Beam Expander Wavelength Technology Singapore Pte. Ltd. Before start operating the beam expander, please open the installed control program. Program >> Wavelength-Tech >> Motor Controller >> Lauch CommWizard.exe Window as below will pop out. 1. Click the "SETTINGS " Change the following parameters Serial Port :12 (as found from previous page) Baud Rate at Port Setting : 9600 Bd (default) Wave: W1:0355 (if using BXZ X-MOT) Do not change the other parameters except above. 9

10 2. Click "INITIALIZE" after configuring the "SETTING". Wait for a moment until the counter count down to zero. Now the beam expander is ready for use! 3. The motorized beam expander guarantees the precision level with at most two times consecutively adjustment from initialization. If user would like to make another adjustment after the first two time adjustment, it is HIGHLY encouraged to "INITIALIZE" the expander to avoid the cumulative errors caused by multiple adjustment. Lens Control In this field, there are total 15 positions available for user to choose. These positions corresponding to 1X - 8X respectively. After selecting your preferred magnification, click Go button, the lens groups will be moved to the pre-set position. Note: The pre-set zoom position data are saved as default values according to our design values. They will never be over-writed. Though the data probably may not suitable for every laser due to its slightly different in beam size or divergence, user still can use the Advanced Lens Control to adjust the zoom position data for each zoom ratio. Advanced Lens Control In Lens Control section, user can choose any lens position for the regarding beam expansion in between 1X and 8X. However, in Advanced Lens Control section provides user the degree of freedom to fine-tune your lens separation in order to achieve a more precise output beam size or reduce the beam divergence. Kindly slide the bar along the "Collimator" and "Expender" scales or click the up and down buttons beside it to fine-tune the lens separation. User has to go through several trials and measure the output for ensuring a collimated beam size. 10

11 Save and Read As mentioned previously, user can fine-tune the lens position in order to obtain the exact output beam size for any magnification. For instance, after you tuned out the exact position for 1X, press S 1X button to save the record into a text file. Next time when you need to access to this tunedposition, you just need to click R 1X button and then GoToPo button. For other magnification such as 1.3x, user can adjust the "Expender" and "Collimator" scales in Advanced Lens Control section. After you obtain the 1.3x s output beam size, then click Save Best button to save the record. Anytime when you need access to this specific magnification ratio, just click Read Best button and then GoToPo button. 11
