1 Heska CBC-Diff Make sure they have a CBC-Diff or SpotChem EZ machine, the earlier model ABC Hematology does not work with Intravet. If the clients wish to use both machines they need to have 2 serial ports on the workstation or they can hook up each machine on a different workstation. The connection used is a standard Serial Cable with female connectors on both ends. Serial Port Setup should be as follows: Baud = 9600 Parity = N DataBits = 8 Stopbits = 1 HW-handshake = Y To configure the CBC machine to output results to IntraVet instead of the printer, do the following:

2 1. Hit the MENU button to see the setup screen. There will be 8 lines. We are only concerned with lines 2 and 3 at this point. 2. Push the down arrow key to highlight line 2 (Set Auto-print mode =). Hit the number 6 and then the ENTER key. This will move you to line 3 and now line 2 should say Set Auto-print mode = On line 3 (Set print-key function =) do the same thing, hit number 6 and then the ENTER key. Line 3 should now say Set print-key function = 6. Next check serial port connection on the CBC machine: 1. On the main menu, move down to line 5 (Setup menu ) and hit ENTER. 2. Next move down to the line 10 (Setup menu 2) and hit ENTER. 3. Now move down to line 5 (Serial port setup) and hit ENTER. This should take you to a screen where you can enter in the five variables for serial setup. Baud = 9600 Parity = N DataBits = 8 Stopbits = 1 HW-handshake = Y 4. Confirm that these are the correct settings and hit MENU until you are back at the main screen. Now connect the serial cable to the back of the CBC machine:

3 1. Use SERIAL OUTPUT RS 232. Connect one end of the serial cable to this port and the other to the workstation serial port. 2. Next open the Heska CBC-Diff interface window as you would normally. 3. Click the connect button inside of IntraVet. The box should turn green, indicating readiness for transmission. After the CBC test is finished it should automatically send the results over. If transmission fails, you can use the PRINT button to send it to IntraVet again. During the test setup on the CBC you should enter the client s account number for the ID#. This will assign the results to the correct client in IntraVet s Lab Interface window. Selecting a PROG Prog1 for DOG Prog2 for CAT Prog3 for HORSE Prog4 for RABBIT Prog5 for FERRET Prog6 for MOUSE Any other prog used will Default to DOG.

4 SpotChem EZ Serial Setup is different than the setup from above. The serial setup should be as follows: Baud = 9600 Parity = EVEN DataBits = 7 Stopbits = 2 HW-handshake = Y Connecting the Cable Connect using a serial cable with one end has an RJ-25 connector (looks like a telephone cable) the other end looks like a standard female serial connector.

5 Locate the RJ-25 jack on the back of the Spot Chem analyzer. It is located to the right of the serial number plate and is labeled COM. This jack looks just like a modular telephone jack. Plug the small end of the 9-pin serial cable (the end that looks like a telephone plug) into this jack and make sure it is firmly seated. Plug the other end of the 9-pin serial cable into the serial port in the back of the workstation.

6 Configuring the SpotChem for Transmission Begin at the analyzer s main menu. It should display: 1. Measure 2. Submenu 3. Calibrate. If the main menu is not currently displayed, press the STOP button until it appears. 1. Press the MENU and STOP buttons simultaneously. 2. You are prompted for a password. Press the -/. button on the Spot Chem. 3. Enter the following key sequence on the keypad: Press the -/. button again. 5. Press the ENTER button. You are now returned to the Main Menu. There should be a + to the right of the Submenu option. 6. Press 2 (Submenu). 7. Press 6 (Setup). 8. Press 3(Communication). The cursor should now be in the Use field. 9. Press the -/. button until this field displays ON. 10. Press the ENTER button. The cursor should now be in the Format field. 11. Press the -/. button until this field displays Press the ENTER button. The cursor should now be in the Baud rate field. 13. Press the -/. button until this field displays Press the ENTER button. a. Sometimes there is another setting, just hit enter until you re back at the beginning. If you don t go through all the settings then none of them are saved. 15. Press the STOP button several times until you see the following message: Back to USER MODE?

7 16. Press the START button. The analyzer will go through an initializing cycle and return to the main menu. Enter the Sample ID The Sample ID is transferred over to IntraVet, however, the character length is too small to hold the Account number we use in IntraVet. The Sample ID should now allow for ID, Account Number, and Pet name. 1. Use 1, 2, or 3 for the ID where 1 will be for DOG, 2 will be for CAT, 3 will be for other. This number will determine what range the results will be compared in. ( i.e. The BUN range for DOG is 10-29mg/dl, CAT is 15-35mg/dl, and OTHER is 10-25mg/dl) Leaving the ID blank uses the Default range of DOG. Next, space and then the account number. Space and then the patients name. This must be done precisely, if not the account number and pet name will not transfer over. Remember, its ProgID <space> ACCNO <space> PETNAME. If the patient name is not found the Lab Interface window in IntraVet will feature a? for the patient name. UPDATE: the <space> is entered by pressing the -/. key TWICE to the left of Enter 2. Double click on the posted results or highlight the results and click update to find the client and associate their account number with the results.
