This platform design supports multiple file protocols enabling Windows, Novell, and UNIX clients to access storage. 2 Description The xseries 150 NAS appliances are high-throughput, two-way SMP-capable appliances with excellent scalability. They incorporate a powerful 800 MHz Pentium III processor with 256 KB advanced transfer L2 cache. The advanced transfer cache is the result of a new backside bus that is 256 bits wide. Four times wider than the previous bus, the quad-wide cache line can transfer four 64-bit cache line segments at one time to deliver full-speed capability. Two Intel Pentium III connectors are standard on the system board to support installation of a second processor. High-speed, 133 MHz SDRAM is optimized for 133 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem performance. The xseries 150 uses the ServerWorks ServerSet III LE (CNB3.0LE) chipset to maximize throughput from processors to memory, and to the 64-bit and 32-bit PCI buses. Preloaded Software The xseries 150 is preloaded with Windows Powered OS and other software designed specifically to support network clients accessing large amounts of data storage on the server using multiple file protocols. Preloaded software includes: Windows Powered OS optimized for supported NAS applications Netfinity Director 2.12 UM Server Extensions provides system management support based on industry standards ServeRAID Manager RAID Configuration and Monitoring provides configuration tools and RAID management of xseries appliances using ServeRAID-4 controllers Columbia Data Products Open Transaction Manager provides a snapshot of customer data and enables full backup of system with Microsoft backup applications Advanced appliance configuration utility manage all your xseries appliances from a single client with this Web-based application set Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility The advanced appliance configuration utility tool helps you set and reconfigure the network configuration for one or many xseries appliance servers. This software consists of an agent on each appliance server and a Java application residing on a Windows-based client workstation acting as a configuration station. You can use this configuration station to: Discover xseries appliance servers Set up and manage xseries server network configurations Launch the comprehensive Web-based server management console in a separate browser window Network administrators not currently running DHCP servers will find the advanced appliance configuration utility particularly useful for automatically configuring network settings for newly added xseries appliances. Even administrators with networks using DHCP servers can benefit from the advanced appliance configuration utility, by permanently assigning IP addresses and host names automatically and launching Web-based management. 3 Expandability and Growth The xseries 150 mechanical packages are available in tower or rack models. The rack model is engineered to meet the compactness of a 5 U rack drawer. A conversion kit is available to convert a tower mechanical for rack mounting. SVGA video, dual-channel Ultra160 SCSI, full-duplex 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, and the Advanced System Management Processor are integrated on the system board. Netfinity Director is a powerful, highly integrated, systems management software solution built on industry standards and designed for ease of use. Now you can exploit your existing enterprise or workgroup management environments and use the Internet to securely access and manage physically dispersed IT assets more efficiently. Netfinity Director can help reduce costs through: Reduced down time Increased productivity of IT personnel and end users Reduced service and support costs Netfinity Director lets IT administrators view the hardware configuration of remote systems in detail and monitor the usage and performance of critical components such as processors, HDDs, and memory. Netfinity Director includes Universal Manageability (UM) Server Extensions, a portfolio of server tools, that integrates into the Netfinity Director interface and work with the Advanced System Management Processor or other systems management monitoring functions contained in xseries servers. From the start, IBM programs help you purchase servers, get them running, and keep them running over the long haul. IBM can help your company maintain ownership of technology-leadership network servers. IBM Server Start Up Support provides additional installation assistance during the first 90 days from the start of your warranty period on select devices, adapters, and network operating systems from IBM and non-ibm vendors. IBM on-site, three-year limited warranty with next-business-day service (same-business-day service optionally available) protects your investment if a problem occurs. This service also includes replacement of parts identified through PFA. The ServerProven,5 program lets you confidently configure your server. This Web-based program provides compatibility information from actual testing of the xseries 150 with various devices

4 Electronic support on the Web provides additional support in an easy-to-use format. TechConnect is the IBM server information and certification program that helps IBM Business Partners stay current with the latest information about our servers. This program is also available to customers. Product Positioning xseries 150, using the popular xseries 230 platform, is preconfigured from the factory with hardware features and software. The xseries 150 is an xseries Point Solution server positioned to handle NAS applications and general purpose networking applications in heterogeneous (IBM and non-ibm servers) and non-heterogeneous (IBM servers) network environments. Within the xseries Point Solution offerings, the xseries 150 contains the expansion and scalability features necessary run NAS and general purpose applications that other Point Solution servers designed specifically for Web serving, such as the xseries 130, do not. 5 IBM US Announcement Supplemental Information October 3, 2000 Additional Information EXP300 Storage Expansion Unit (3531-1RU): This highly available external storage expansion unit, supported with the model 3XY, can hold 14 slim-high 10K-4 Ultra160 SCSI HDDs, providing a total capacity of 509 GB per unit. The EXP300 contains two hot-swap, redundant power supply/fan assemblies. Potential failure-causing conditions are reported to the controller using PFA. This processor can be used to upgrade the model 33Y to a two-processor system. 10/100 Ethernet Adapter 2 (#3301) The Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Adapter 2 provides IEEE compliant 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T Ethernet connectivity for servers over an unshielded twisted pair link through a single RJ-45 connector. Its 32-bit PCI 2.1 bus mastering architecture offers outstanding performance with low server CPU utilization. It provides half-duplex and full-duplex operation at both 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps. Auto-negotiation of speed and duplex mode facilitates the use of the adapter in shared or switched environments running at either speed. Gigabit Ethernet SX Adapter (#3302) The Gigabit Ethernet SX Adapter provides 1000BASE-SX connectivity to a Gigabit Ethernet network for servers over a 50 or 62.5 micron multimode fiber optic link attached to its duplex SC connector. Its 1000 Mbps data rate and 32- or 64-bit PCI bus mastering architecture enable the highest Ethernet bandwidth available in an adapter. It is compliant with IEEE 802.3z Ethernet and PCI 2.1 standards, ensuring compatibility with existing Ethernet installations. It also supports 802.1p packet prioritization and 802.1q VLAN tagging. 256 MB 133 MHz ECC SDRAM RDIMM (#3401) The four DIMM sockets on the servers support up to 1G B when populated with this feature. System SurePath BIOS is loaded from a flash EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the xseries 150 and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs. Limitations These appliance servers are preloaded and tuned at the factory with specific application software designed to support network clients accessing data storage. The xseries 150 model 33Y is limited to GB of data storage. The xseries 150 model 3XY is limited to 1.7 TB of storage through the use of external EXP300 storage units. IBM support is limited to the preloaded software and a very limited number of options. Refer to Planning Information for a list of supported options. These preloaded xseries 150 servers support a maximum of 2 GB system memory when you install memory options in all or some of the four DIMM sockets. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access (DMA). Microprocessor SMP upgrades must be of the same type and clock speed. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache size is not supported. These appliance servers are preloaded and tuned at the factory with specific application software. 8 Configuration Information Bay Configuration: The xseries 150 contains 10 drive bays. The six 3.5-inch, hot-swap bays are ready for various supported hot-swap drive option installation. These hot-swap bays are the only bays supported for installation of HDDs. External SCSI Attachment: Only the xseries 150 model 3XY supports installation of external data storage through EXP300 storage units. Options Supported: Because the xseries 150 servers are preconfigured, tuned, and tested for use as appliances, configurability is limited. Memory support is limited to 2 GB. In addition, they are supported in the deeper Netfinity Enterprise Rack. Cable Orders: The 10/100 Mbps, full-duplex, Ethernet PCI controller, standard with xseries 150, is connected directly to an RJ-45 connector. The factory-installed Ethernet adapters also contain RJ-45 connectors. The RJ-45 connectors provide 10BaseT or 100Base-TX interfaces for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100 Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used. There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections. Installability: The xseries 150 requires about 15 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Security, Auditability, and Control Security and auditability features include: Power-on and privileged access password functions provide controls of who has access to the data and server setup program on the server. Set unattended boot mode allows the system keyboard to be locked to all entries except the password and at the same time allows other computers on the network to access the system disk drive. Mechanical lock allows the user to lock the system cover to prevent unauthorized personnel access to diskette drives or removable media (tower models only, security of rack drawer models is provided by the rack enclosure). Selectable boot sequence can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive. It is a customer s responsibility to ensure that the server is secure to prevent sensitive data from being removed.
