1 Hardware Announcement April 25, 2006 IBM System x3650 T server Full-function, NEBS-compliant models for telecommunications environments Overview The System x3650 T server is engineered from the start to support telecommunications environments where NEBS compliance is required. This full-function, cost-effective, carrier-grade solution combines Intel processor technology and Linux operating system support to deliver high performance at a fraction of the cost of similar UNIX -based solutions. Ideally suited for telecommunications, wireless, and other applications that require dc power, these 2 U high, 20-inch deep rack models provide outstanding function for xseries products. Preconfigured with two-way SMP processors, substantial system memory, redundant power supplies, and Ultra320 SCSI HDDs, these servers are ready to handle advanced telco applications. 2 Description Related Options IBM ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM Memory Option Kits Part number 73P2865 contains (2 x 512 MB) DDR2 memory DIMMs. Part number DIMMs. 73P2866 contains (2 x 1 GB) DDR2 memory These DIMMs support DDR2 memory interface to processors and PCI bus at 400 MHz. Telco network applications The System x3650 T servers use -48 V dc power to meet telecommunications network infrastructure requirements. These 2 U-high, NEBS-compliant servers contain two 470-watt, hot-swap redundant power supplies and excellent system monitoring and control features to meet stringent telco standards for telecommunications equipment. They contain two powerful 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon processors, each with 2 MB advanced transfer L2 cache. High-speed, 400 MHz SDRAM is optimized for 800 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem performance. The System x3650 T server uses the Intel FCPGA chipset to optimize throughput from processors to memory, and to a 64-bit PCI or PCI-X bus. Three low-profile 3.3 V, 66/100 MHz slots and three full-size 5.0 V, 100 MHz slots are supported by the two 64-bit buses. System BIOS is loaded from a flash EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the System x3650 T server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs. For cabling specifications and overcurrent protection information, refer to the Cable orders section of this announcement. The maximum combined power capacity for the PCI slots of this product are as follows: Low-profile PCI slots: 30 watts Full-sized PCI slots: 50 watts Installation of a keyboard and mouse at the same time requires a splitter cable. The serial port consists of an RJ-45 connector. A converter cable is required to install 9- or 25-pin serial cable attachments. The System x3650 T standard configuration is NEBS-compliant. For information about obtaining NEBS compliancy for any other configurations, contact your IBM representative. The System x3650 T server contains four configurable USB ports. It can be configured to be operating system-controlled, service processor controlled, or shared between the two. You can set the configuration by changing the header location to which the internal serial cable is plugged. The default location from the factory is in the shared position. In the shared position, the service processor controls the port until the operating system is running, then the operating system takes control. The service processor can regain control of the port for user-configured dial-out situations or if the operating system is not available, but operating system control cannot be reestablished without resetting the server. This server supports a maximum of 16 GB of system memory by adding a 4 GB DIMM in each of the four DIMM slots. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access. The System x3650 T supports 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB DDR2 400 ECC SDRAM DIMMs (4 MB DIMM not supported at this time). Supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system; however, due to memory interleaving, memory must be installed in matched pairs. Refer to the Planning information section for supported memory options. Planning information Customer responsibilities: This server must be installed by personnel trained in telco dc wiring installations. Setup instructions are shipped with the system. Configuration information Bay configuration The System x3650 T server contains three drive bays. The top bay on the left contains the standard CD-DVD RW drive. Two 3.5-inch, slim-high bays are located side-by-side from the center to the right side of the server. Each bay contains a GB Ultra320 SCSI HDD standard; the 52x and 53x models comes without HDDs. The 24x-10x EIDE CD-RW is connected to the IDE port. Internal HDD cabling: HDDs installed in the drive bays are connected to the internal connector of the integrated Ultra320 SCSI controller through a two-drop, 32-bit LVD SCSI cable. External device attachment: The System x3650 T contains an external.8 mm VHDCI connector to attach supported external SCSI devices to the second channel of the integrated SCSI controller. Ultra320 SCSI: The Adaptec AIC-7902W controller contains two independent SCSI controllers that share a single 64-bit, 100-MHz PCI-X bus master interface as a multifunction device, packaged in a 456-pin BGA. Rack installations: The System x3650 T server is a 2 U, rack-mounted server designed to be installed in a two-post, 19-inch rack unit. Cable orders: The System x3650 T servers requires customer-supplied wiring from a dc power source to the server. The cable size must be 14 AWG and not exceed 3 meters. The power source must have a minimum of

7 A and a maximum of 15 A overcurrent protection. Information pertaining to wiring installation is contained in the installation guide for this product. Article 240 paragraph 3 of the National Electric Code, table , further describes wiring requirements for this type of equipment. The dual-gigabit, full-duplex, Ethernet PCI controllers, standard with this server, are connected directly to independent RJ-45 connectors. The RJ-45 connectors provide a 10BaseT, or 1000Base-TX interface for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use a UTP cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used. There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections. Installability: The System x3650 T server requires about 30 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional adapters, or features. The shipment group is contained inside the system unit carton. Supplies For end users: System x3650 T servers can be purchased through dealers around the world. Security, auditability, and control Security and auditability features include: Power-on and privileged-access password functions control who has access to the data and server setup program on the server. Set unattended boot mode allows the system keyboard to be locked to all entries except the password and at the same time allows other computers on the network to access the system disk drive. The selectable boot sequence can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive. This server is intended to be installed and secured in a rack. Customers are responsible for ensuring that the server and rack installation are secure to prevent sensitive data from being removed. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. IBM Electronic Services IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eserver platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent. Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eserver system. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose. On-site service is not available in all countries, and some countries have kilometer or mileage limitations from an IBM service center. In those locations where on-site service is not available, the normal in-country service delivery is used. Call IBM at 800-IBM-SERV ( ) to assist with problem isolation for hardware to determine if warranty service is required. Telephone support may be subject to additional charges, even during the limited warranty period. International Warranty Service (IWS): International Warranty Service (IWS) is available during the warranty period to customers who travel or relocate to countries where their computer is sold and serviced by IBM or IBM resellers authorized to perform warranty service. Eligible IBM computers are identified by their four-digit machine type. You can obtain IWS through the method of service, such as CRU, depot, carry-in, or on-site, provided in the servicing country. Service methods and procedures vary by country, and some service or parts may not be available in all countries.
