2 WELCOME TO ASIP The 2016 Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) Conference is specifically designed to bring together the world leaders in the area of aircraft structural integrity and to disseminate information of state-ofthe-art technologies for aircraft structures in both the military and civilian fleets. This is the 32nd Anniversary of the ASIP Conference in its current format, although similar meetings occurred in the 1970s. This year also marks the 58th anniversary of the publication of the initial requirements for the US Air Force s Aircraft Structural Integrity Program. ASIP 2016 will continue to provide a forum for the technical interchange of information between personnel responsible for structural integrity, including design, analysis, testing, manufacture, certification, non-destructive evaluation/inspection, maintenance, repair, safety, risk assessment and mitigation, durability and life management. This interchange helps provide the communication necessary to ensure that each community is aware of each other s capabilities and needs. The ASIP Conference has become even more important to the Air Force, Navy, Army, NASA and the FAA due to the constantly growing emphasis on sustaining the airworthiness of aging aircraft. 5 F E AT U R E D S P E A K E R S 2016 Lincoln Award Winner Dr. Anders Blom Swedish Defence Research Agency and INNOVAIR Anders obtained his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at Linköping University in 1979 after having spent his last year making thesis work, on plasma welded bellows for ultra high vacuum applications, at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. He then joined the Aeronautical Research Institute of Sweden (FFA) in 1980, which was merged with another institute into the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) in He has held various positions at these organizations, including head of fatigue and fracture, head of structures and materials, and head of aeronautics. Anders currently has two half time functions as research director for aeronautics at FOI and as program director for INNOVAIR, the national strategic innovation program for aeronautics. The latter runs both research and demonstrator programs for both civil and military aeronautics and involves all national actors, i.e., large industries (Saab and GKN Aerospace Sweden), SMEs, universities, institutes (FOI, Swerea), agencies (Armed Forces, Swedish Defence Materiel Administration) and governmental bodies, see Anders made his Ph.D. (1984) and D.Sc. (1985) in Lightweight Structures at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm where he was also adjunct professor He was elected member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 1994 and has held various functions there, including being chairman of the Division for Mechanical Engineering, chairman of the Industrial Research Group, and chairman of the Akzo Nobel Science Award. From his experience in aeronautical R&D are some 150 papers on fatigue and fracture, fibre composites, non-linear finite element analysis, structural and materials testing, damage tolerance and durability of aircraft structures, etc. He has worked on structural issues for various civil and military aircraft, introduction of damage tolerance criteria for the fighter 37 Viggen, certification of the new Swedish fighter Gripen, multiple cracking in Finnish Air Force s F-18, failure analysis of Ariane 5 rocket for Arianespace, France, failure analysis of various nuclear reactor components, fatigue of large wind turbines in Sweden and Denmark, and consulting on structural and material problems for Volvo Michigan Euclid, Avesta Sheffield, Swedish Steel, Sunds Defibrator, and other Swedish industries. Anders became the Swedish national delegate to ICAF in 1985, and is the general secretary of ICAF since He was active in AGARD (NATO Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development) where he was main lecturer for NATO Advanced Institute on Advances in Fatigue Science and Technology in He is the Swedish representative, appointed by Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, in ACARE General Assembly (Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe) and national council member of ICAS (International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences). 6 FEATURED SPEAKERS Anders Blom (Continued) He is further a national technical expert in EDA (European Defence Agency) Cap Tech ESM02 (Air Systems and their Environment) and is the chairman of the steering committee for the International Fatigue Series. Anders was awarded the F. J. Plantema Award by ICAF in He has also received the Thulin silver medal, for development of fatigue and fracture mechanics for metallic structures, in 1997, and the Thulin gold medal, for his contributions to Swedish Aeronautics, in The latter are awarded by the Swedish Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics together with the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. Tuesday Luncheon Speaker Dr. Max Javaheri Director, Advanced Production Systems Boeing Research & Technology Max Javaheri is director of Advanced Production Systems at Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T), based at the BR&T Research Center South Carolina. He was named to the position in August He is responsible for leadership of key technologies in Assembly & Automation for both high- and low-rate production, Measurement and Human Factors, Safety and Ergonomics, and Inspection & Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). He leads a team of scientists, technologists, and engineers geographically distributed across BR&T Centers in Washington, Southern California, Missouri, Alabama, and South Carolina. He has 25 years of professional experience working in the automotive, fluid delivery systems and automation/robotics industries. Before joining Boeing, Javaheri served for 17 years with General Motors, where he held several executive leadership roles, including global facilities, manufacturing operations, and engineering. He established scalable and standardized automation system solutions in both high-rate/high-cost sites, as well as low-rate/low-cost sites globally. Internationally, he has lived and worked in Germany, China and South Korea. He holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University. ASIP 2016 Featured Speakers

7 Wednesday Luncheon Speaker Dr. Douglas C. Blake Director, Aerospace Systems Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Dr. Douglas C. Blake, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is the Director, Aerospace Systems Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In this capacity, he leads the Air Force s science and technology program in propulsion, power and air vehicles for advanced next-generation space, missile and aircraft applications. The Aerospace Systems Directorate consists of a workforce of more than 1,800 military, civilians, and contractors executing an annual budget in excess of $700 million and $4 billion in research facilities spread over 65 square miles at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH; Edwards AFB, CA, and Arnold Engineering Development Complex, TN. Dr. Blake served for 20 years in the active-duty Air Force as both enlisted and officer in a variety of positions which included; Korean Cryptologic Linguist, ICBM maintenance engineer, AFRL researcher, and Associate Professor of Aeronautics at the US Air Force Academy. Upon retiring in 2002, he entered the private sector where he worked as the Director of R&D Business for a small business involved in modeling and simulation. In 2004, Dr. Blake entered the Air Force civil service as Chief of the Computational Sciences Branch of AFRL. He held subsequent assignments in the Lab as Chief of the Aeronautical Sciences Division and Deputy Director of the Air Vehicles Directorate. He also served as the Director of the 76th Software Maintenance Group at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma and as Executive Director of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex, Tennessee. Prior to his current assignment, Dr. Blake served in the Federal Aviation Administration s Executive Service as the Program Director of the FAA Logistics Center where he led a workforce of over 600 employees engaged in supply-chain management; maintenance, repair, and overhaul; and logistics-support services for the United States National Airspace System.
