4 Golden Bullets Aisle containment is only half of the solution We all know that isolating the hot aisle from the cold aisle can save up to a reported 40% of cooling energy by avoiding aisle to aisle scavenging of hot air BUT the biggest danger of hot air scavenging exists within the rack as the shortest route for server exhaust air to server - inlet air is within the rack via the sides. Cannon Air Block Mouldings prevent this and reduce cooling energy cost as well as raising cooling capacity. Cisco side air flow is resolved, with ease For many types of CISCO Switch, where side to side air flow is required, Cannon Air Block mouldings enable extremely rapid configuration of air management paths. Cold air flow and hot exhaust air flow is effectively segregated. Reconfiguration is easily achieved by repositioning the Air Block Mouldings appropriately. Big Cisco switches no longer need 1metre (40-inch) wide racks For the larger Cisco switches see the Cannon Borrower Kits, these enable standard 800 (32-inch) wide racks to cleverly accommodate the mandated air flow avoiding the need to install 1 metre (40-inch) wide racks, this saves costly moves and changes in the Data Centre caused by racks with rogue widths. No more air escaping in floor tiles Old fashioned floor tile grommets are of flawed design as they allow cold air to escape when heavily loaded with cable, dressed to sides of the racks they are serving. The new patented AIR-LOKK grommet solves this problem due to the revised brush design. It also has improved cable management and is highly versatile. 6 Air Management Solutions Overview An air flow barrier regime, comprising a range of components which prevent the wasteful escape of cooling air through voids in a 19-inch cabinet. The Challenge Even a fully populated cabinet can loose in the region of 50% of cooling air through escape routes which are outside the perimeter of the 19-inch equipment field. Causing massive wastage of cooling energy, increasing carbon footprint and reducing the cooling effect of the CRAC. The Solution Cannon Air Management Solutions effectively closes these escape routes ensuring that cooling air flows only through the active equipment present in the cabinet. Significant energy savings can be achieved and the Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) will be less stressed, improving efficiency. 7 Air Management Solutions Blank Mouldings for Cabinet Roof Blank Mouldings for Cabinet Roof These plastic mouldings fit into the cabling apertures in the roof of ServerSmart Cab and Smart Cab enclosures. In place of the finger-type cabling mouldings when the roof is required to have the cabling apertures blanked off. 8 Air Management Solutions Air Block Kit for 800mm (32-inch) wide Cabinet Air Block Kit - for 800mm (32-inch) wide Cabinet Components which can substantially improve effective cooling. Air Block Kits provide an effective air lock preventing cold air escaping through the rack and by bypassing the IT equipment for which it is intended. Air Block Kits also prevent hot exhaust air from the rear of the rack scavenging to the front of the rack and contaminating the cold air. Air Block Kits effectively seal the gaps at the side, above and below the 19-inch equipment mounting field, ensuring that costly cooling air is guided only to the target equipment and not wasted. As much as 50% of a wide/tall rack can comprise air bypass paths which are outside of the 19-inch equipment field. Failing to block these paths can dramatically reduce PUE performance. Air Block components include mouldings which seal the windows in vertical infill panels. These mouldings can be brush finger type to allow through cabling or solid mouldings. Both types embody side tabs which extend to the side panel sealing often ignored areas. In addition special brush strip components are available to seal the gaps above and below the 19-inch equipment field. The mouldings touch the side panels providing an effective air block up the full height of the cabinet. Close fit cable fingers allow throgh cabling to be achieved, whilst preserving the air block effect. 11 When the INSIDE is important, make the OUTSIDE Cannon SOLUTIONS A i s l e C o c o o n i n g The Cannon Aisle Cocooning System provides segregation of cold aisle air flow from hot aisle exhaust air in data centres. By preventing the contamination of cold air by hot air, the full effect of this cooling resource is available to servers and other power hungry equipment contained in IT enclosures, ensuring effective cooling. Servers mounted at the upper levels of a cabinet are particularly prone to overheating due to the combined effects of: Upwards heat convection and radiation, from equipment below Heat gradient up the vertical height of the computer room Undesirable air recirculation, in which hot exhaust air is pulled to the front of the enclosure, re-entering the server with damaging effect. This is often called air scavenging Aisle Cocooning, usually of the cold aisle, dramatically lowers the cold air temperature available to the servers by preventing contamination of the cold air by hot/exhaust air. This protects equipment against damage, prolongs equipment life, reduces the load on the computer room air conditioning and saves energy, reducing carbon footprint. Cables significantly distort the root of the brush, opening a large air leakage path, destroying the air blocking objective of the gland. 2. Sharp corners in the gland can corrupt data. 3. 14 TecSpur AIR-LOKK Floor Gland Features & Benefits The brush is Quick-Fit, Quick-Release removable allowing access through the gland, to under floor The brush is mounted on a central bar so that the tips of the brush rest on the sides of the gland where the brush is not heavily distorted by cables (Cables do not pass through the root of the brush where bad distortion will occur) This patented orientation of the brush dramatically improves air blockage and supports the brush to prevent brush droop over time Bend radii and cable tie points avoid corrupted data and simplify installation One Air-Lokk gland can be either surface mounted, drop in (into a cut out in the tile) or retro-fitted around pre-installed cables reducing the range of glands required The gland has quick release features for instant separation of the frame when retro-fitting, so no tools are needed For Drop-in mode, the skirt of the gland protects cables from sharp metal at the lower cut edges of the tile and provides bend radius at the lower and upper edges to protect data integrity An optional Data/Power Partition is available to separate power cable from data cable by the required amount, to protect against data corruption The separator bridge just drops in after large power connectors have been passed through the gland, so any size of preterminated connectors can be used Fibre optic cable can be introduced through the bridge to utilise the data separation space effectively. 15 TecSpur AIR-LOKK Floor Gland Air Management Solutions Locking Cold Air Flow Away from Hot Air Two issues are of significant importance to separate Cold and Hot Air via any grommet. i.e. Cold air pressure should not lift the brush strip seal and escape Hot air should not be sucked downwards into the cold air flow Note: IPACK ASME advises that grommet/tiles near the CRAC unit often experience negative air flow from inside the rack, pulling hot air down into the cold air stream. AIR-LOKK Grommets have been laboratory tested and brushes did not lift or flap until an air pressure of 1500 pascals (0.44 water gauge) was reached. Under-floor static pressure is commonly 6 pascals (0.025 water gauge). AIR-LOKK Grommets substantially exceed the common static pressure with a high safety factor. Unique Brush Gland The brush gland is pre-stressed to resist air pressure. The patented system provides firm support to both ends of the brush and the brush tips press down, onto the radiused sides of the grommet, acting like leaf springs.
