Innovation in advanced power electronics can make distributed energy storage attractive Sanket Puranik, Iliana Ilieva Smart Innovation Norway Andreas Sumper Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya WRS, Girona 17-18/10/2017 Renewable penetration levered by Efficient Low Voltage Distribution grids Futures Conference 2018 (Session II, 13 th June 2018)

Agenda Background Objective Initial results Stakeholder analysis Use cases for DSO Stakeholder map Future work 2

RESOLVD Project H2020 R&I action project under grant agreement Partners: Universitat de Girona (Coordinator, ES) Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (ES) Intracom Telecom (GR) Joanneum Research (AU) Smart Innovation Norway (NO) ComSensus (SI) Estabanell Distribució (ES) Renewable penetration levered by Efficient Low Voltage Distribution grids

RESOLVD objective Improve efficiency and the hosting capacity of distribution networks in a context of highly distributed renewable generation by introducing energy flexibility and control by acting on the grid through innovative advanced power electronics devices, with certain storage management capabilities, in low voltage distribution grids 4

RESOLVD Technologies Power electronic devices (PED) Power conversion system Battery management system Intelligent local energy manager Wide are monitoring system (WAMS) Phasor measurement unit ICT infrastructure (gateways and hubs) Software module Decision support toolkit (DST) Forecasting Scheduling Distributed software platform (P) Enterprise service bus Data analytics platform 5

Objectives Identify and describe various stakeholders Assess benefits associated with specific technology solutions for both the lowvoltage level grid and the stakeholders Develop use cases to validate business models Approach Stakeholder analysis and mapping Use case development New business model definitions based upon use cases 6

Stakeholder analysis Stakeholder type Energy communities Relevant RESOLVD technology PED, DST, P Motivation Increase consumption from local energy resources Improved grid reliability Economic benefits from flexibility Possibly lower electricity price/grid tariff Narrative Relevant technologies enable communities to better manage their local resources, both generation and demand Direct benefit - selling of flexibility Indirect benefit - reduced electricity tariff 7

Stakeholder analysis Stakeholder type Balance responsible parties Relevant RESOLVD technology WAMS, PED Motivation Minimise imbalances Additional revenue stream Narrative BRP can get better understanding of their resources Planning resources better with WAMS and PED Additional resource available in the form of flexibility (including storage) 8

Stakeholder analysis Stakeholder type Energy service company (ESCO) Relevant RESOLVD technology PED Motivation Making better investment decision (like where they should invest in what measure/technology, etc.) Increased customer interest for investment in local storage/local generation Narrative PED will allow ESCOs to provide flexibility and increases the quality of services they offer Better return on investment on batteries by selling flexibility Indirect benefit from WAMS: better investment decision 9

Use Cases (UC) for DSOs No. Use cases Description Relevant RESOLVD technology 1 Improved observability Advanced power electronics PED, WAMS and P 2 Increased reliability Optimal investment planning Reduced technical losses Detection of nontechnical losses (frauds) Dynamic network reconfiguration and optimal scheduling capability Minimize/delay investment for network upgrade through smart grid-operation Power electronics and local storage Advanced sensors and data analytics services P and DST All PED 6 Improved power quality Advanced power electronics PED 7 Cybersecurity Protection, detection and reaction actions WAMS, P P 10

UC: Optimal investment planning Description: Minimize/delay investment for network upgrade through smart gridoperations Key technology: PED, WAMS, DST, P Key stakeholders DSO Hardware supplier Software developer (data analytics+platform provider) Storage operator/owner Other affected stakeholders Energy communities Regulators Industries 11

Stakeholder Map 12

Initial assessment Power electronic device with storage management is attractive for various lowvoltage grid users along with DSO Other most eminent stakeholders: energy communities owning storage of various types, neighborhood/block managers, industrial facilities, commercial buildings of larger-scale Use-cases indicate a profitable business environment for the RESOLVD solutions. Customizations are needed Value propositions assessed so far indicate attractive opportunities for distributed energy storage 13

Future Work Creation and engagement of stakeholder innovation group (SIG) Developing use cases for crucial stakeholders New business models and validation Mapping business cases on SGAM architecture Additional stakeholder map development 14
