2 Agenda for Today Mission of NIJ NIJ CommTech Program
3 Mission of NIJ Administer a program of research, development, testing, evaluation, and demonstration - NIJ is the research, development and evaluation arm of the U.S. DOJ - NIJ s primary focus is state and local criminal justice agency needs Consider the broader public safety community in planning Establish and maintain advisory groups to assess the technology needs of Federal, State and local criminal justice agencies - Technical Working Groups (TWGs) composed of active LE officers Establish and maintain performance standards, test and evaluate law enforcement technology and equipment, and establish programs to certify, validate and mark technologies and equipment conforming to these standards - Work with appropriate groups, including Office of Law Enforcement Standards at NIST, Global, and others Take the lead in establishing a coordinated Federal approach to issues relating to CJ technology

Public Safety in the U.S. is mostly local - 29,000 Fire and 6,000 EMS Departments 960,000 firefighters 830,000 emergency personnel - 19,000 Law Enforcement Agencies 750,000 Law Enforcement Officers Distributed nature of Public Safety: - Makes it challenging to plan, coordinate, and share technology resources effectively - Resources historically perceived as unique to each agency, contributing to current interoperability issues NIJ helps make technology development and deployment more efficient and effective
