6 Size of workforce With fewer residents, 754,000 workers and 84,000 workplaces, Northern Ireland comprises 22,000 individuals 3% of the current workforce. This is made up from 16,000 people in the IT & Telecoms industry and a further 6,000 working as IT & Telecoms professionals in other industries. The detailed breakdown within these numbers is shown below. It can be seen that, within the IT & Telecoms workforce: There are 16,000 IT & Telecoms professionals, of which 56% are in the IT & Telecoms industry and 44% in other industries, 16,000 people work in the IT & Telecoms industry in Northern Ireland. 43% of these are in non IT & Telecoms professional roles. 7 Occupations Across Northern Ireland, three fifths (60%) of IT & Telecoms professionals are employed as either IT Strategy & Planning Professionals / Software Professionals (46%) or ICT Managers (14%). A further 22% are in IT Technician roles, with the remaining 18% working as IT & Telecoms Assistants / Engineers. 8 Gender Gender imbalance remains a significant issue for the IT & Telecoms workforce in Northern Ireland with females accounting for just 22% of IT & Telecoms professionals. By comparison just under half (48%) of people working in Northern Ireland during the second quarter of 2010 were female. Though slightly less pronounced, a similar story of low female representation levels is exhibited in the IT & Telecoms Industry with a quarter (25%) of IT & Telecoms industry workers being female. Low levels of female representation within IT & Telecoms is not an issue that is unique to the Northern Ireland however, and the gender imbalance appears to be common throughout Europe and the rest of the world. A comparison of female labour market representation for IT professional occupations (IT & Telecoms data is not available) is given by the following graph which shows that even in Iceland where the most balanced picture of IT employment exists, less than one third of IT professionals are women (i.e. 10 percentage points higher than is the case within the UK). 9 Age The average age of IT & Telecoms professionals working in Northern Ireland is estimated to be 35 years old compared with 40 years old for workers more generally. Although no data is available for Northern Ireland, across the UK, just under one half (46%) of IT & Telecoms professionals are aged 40 or above and less than one in five (19%) are in the age bracket.
