2 Presenter Background Syl Santo, RCDD Over 27 years of experience in telecommunications technology Prior experience in design and construction project management of casino complexes, data centers, education and sports facilities Moved to Edmonton from Saint Louis, MO in October 2009 Edmonton NLRT is first rail project

3 Edmonton LRT Background The Edmonton LRT System opened on April 22, 1978 System currently carries close to 95,000 passengers on an average day Total line today is 21km long and includes 15 stations LRT trains operate electrically, which can help reduce air pollution from vehicle emissions and green house gasses.

4 Future LRT Expansion Long-term goal is for a city-wide LRT system Some future routes are in design and dothers await a approval a and funding Public input has been important in planning phases

5 Downtown to NAIT 3.3 km extension from Downtown Center to the North Three new stations New 620m Tunnel Connection includes two major campuses, two hospitals and a major shopping mall First stage of an ultimate extension to the northwest City of St. Albert

6 Project Timetable Design began in Summer 2009 Detailed Design completed and submitted December 2010 Utility relocations and demolition have been completed Construction of the first work package began in early 2011 Projected opening in 2014 Parallel designs ongoing for two other lines and ultimate extension of NLRT

7 EPCOR Tunnel at Station Lands Tunnel structure constructed as part of the new EPCOR Tower 2-cell Tunnel constructed under the 4-story soyunderground degou d parkade Forward-planning saved the City over $35 million Some design challenges due to the existing structure

10 Duct Bank Design Supports both Communications and dsignals with ihdiffering i requirements Transitions include three different tunnel structures and multiple l grade changes NFPA-130 Compliance Urban environment limits available space Heavy buried utility environment Differing structures required to accommodate conflicts

11 Naming and Labeling Standards Historically, multiple methods have been used by ETS for Naming or Labeling Need to consolidate and publish a standard for use on current and future projects ETS will backfill standards on existing lines

12 Horizontal Cable Distribution Cables exposed to extreme temperatures Some extreme distances require a hybrid solution o with optical fibre and media conversion Wayside cabinets must be hardened against potential vandalism as well as the elements Lessons learned from SLRT experiences

13 Network Considerations Existing Ethernet network undergoing upgrade More IP components increase bandwidth utilization CCTV IP Telephony Consolidation of facilities added to the design Optical Fibre backbone Reduced requirement for copper backbone Tunnel fire survivability

14 Telephony Design Migration to IP-based Telephony Need to support analog (2500-set compatible) ROW Telephones Integrate t into existing Nortel CS system Emergency Phone integration with CCTV/BMS Climate considerations

15 Security Design Integrate with existing VMS Migration to IP CCTV from an existing analog camera environment Requirement for intersection and crossing surveillance Multiple camera models and manufacturers in the existing system Unclear or non-existent standards Arctic-rated enclosures & mechanics Reduced cost with PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) Tunnel Intrusion Detection Existing Access Control system

17 Tunnel Radio Design 620m Tunnel Structure that intersects with an existing tunnel Ongoing migration to a Digital Trunked system Challenges related to compliance with NFPA-130 Resolving harmonics conflicts with Jet Fans Conflict resolution with Emergency Services and Signaling System components

18 Lessons Learned Local weather conditions have a greater affect on all communications i systems and infrastructure than initially anticipated. The conditions impact operations AND installation. Concurrent projects can impact design and construction (Network, Signals, CBTC, Consolidation, etc ) and ongoing coordination is key Designing out of the clients Comfort Zone can be perilous maintaining regular and good communications helps alleviate concerns Undertaking new projects with unfamiliar conditions opens opportunities for personal and professional development.
