9 Enterprise Harvests Full Harvests Run nightly. Pulls data from Symphony Production server and populates Enterprise OPAC Full Harvests provide a complete refresh of catalog offerings (adds, deletes and edits) Delta Harvests Run during the day on a defined schedule (currently running every two hours between hours of 11AM and 7PM) this schedule may be adjusted depending on system needs Delta Harvests update existing records only. Deltas do not add new records or remove old records. These are used only to add additional information to records (MARC tags, etc.) Delta Harvests do not provide item availability/holdings. This data is provided by WebServices

10 erc eresource Central erc integrates digital content into your library s Enterprise catalog erc vendors include: Hoopla, Cloud Library, Overdrive, RBDigital erc not only shows available content, but allows content to be checked out and accessed directly from within Enterprise Currently, an individual erc harvest runs for each enabled vendor for each individual Enterprise profiles This means there are a lot of harvest tasks that execute throughout the day

11 How do they interact? Full Enterprise Harvests run overnight on a daily basis The Harvest begins at 12:01AM and generally completes prior to 3AM There are three steps to a harvest: Harvesting, Importing, Indexing erc vendors can push updates to their digital catalog at any time. This triggers an erc harvest Harvest tasks can run simultaneously, but there is a limit to the number of concurrent harvests There are nearly 160 individual erc harvest tasks on our system It is not currently possible to prioritize harvest tasks

12 What happens when things go wrong? Since there are so many erc connections to our system, these erc harvests can have significant impacts on our regularly scheduled Full Enterprise Harvest If a Full Harvest runs off schedule, we can see several, potentially significant, impacts A Delayed Harvest can lead to newly added items not showing up in Enterprise. Items that have been deleted may still show up Delayed Harvests have the potential to run into other system maintenance tasks this can cause significant problems with the Enterprise catalog In the event of a failed Full Harvest with significant data loss, a manual Full Harvest can be triggered

13 What are the next steps? Full Enterprise Harvest success is priority Currently, erc Harvests have been disabled entirely Existing collections still show, and can circulate, but are static Working with SirsiDynix to streamline some of the more demanding harvests (Hoopla) Master erc Harvests Reducing frequency of Delta Harvests Main goal is for erc Harvests to resume and play well with Enterprise Harvest

16 The Importance of Security: CryptoParties/Digital Privacy Training The CryptoParty concept is a grassroots global endeavour to introduce the basics of practical cryptography such as the Tor anonymity network, key signing parties, disk encryption and virtual private networks to the general public. Digital Privacy Training is focused on teaching the general public about threat modeling and making informed decisions about sharing information online.
