2 About the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems The Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems founded in 1957 is one of the leading research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia in the field of applied mathematics and informatics, as well as in applications of computer technologies to different branches of science and technology Scientific Researchers Software Engeneers - 20 Service staff - 30 Postgraduates - 25 Undergraduate - 50 Page 2
3 Outline Previous Activities Current Activities International Collaboration Page 3
4 Previous Activities Academic Scientific Network (ASNET-AM) was established in The structure and policy of ASNET-AM operation was developed and realized by the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems (IIAP NAS RA). ASNET-AM interconnects scientific-research and educational organizations in major cities of Armenia, such as Yerevan, Ashtarak, Byurakan, Abovian, Gyumri. Current inter-city connections are wireless and E1. ASNET-AM network in Yerevan consists of dark fiber infrastructure operating at 100Mbps and partially at 1Gbps. International connection for ASNET-AM is provided Armentel, as well as dedicated channel rented from the Arminco and ADC local telecom companies. ASNET-AM unifies more than 60 scientific and educational organizations. Page 4 1 st BSI EC Periodic Review Meeting Tbilisi,

17 Current Activities - Integration with EGI European Grid Initiative (EGI) The purpose of EGI is to establish a sustainable grid infrastructure in Europe. Driven by the needs and requirements of the research community, it is expected to enable the next leap in research infrastructures, thereby supporting collaborative scientific discoveries in the European Research Area (ERA). The main foundations of EGI are the National Grid Initiatives (NGI), which operate the grid infrastructures in each country. EGI will link existing NGIs and will actively support the setup and initiation of new NGIs. ArmNGI Status in EGI. Observer Page 17

21 Current Activities Monitoring Tools Ganglia is a scalable distributed monitoring system for highperformance computing systems such as clusters and Grids. It is based on a hierarchical design targeted at federations of clusters. It leverages widely used technologies such as XML for data representation, XDR for compact, portable data transport, and RRDtool for data storage and visualization. GStat is a centralised monitoring service, which monitors the worldwide Grid Information System. Its primary goal is to detect faults, verify the validity of and display useful data from the Information System. BBmSAM availability monitoring of the infrastructure is carried out by using SAM (Service Availability Monitoring) system developed in EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe) project. R-GMA (Relational Grid Monitoring Architecture) provides a service for information, monitoring and logging in a distributed computing environment. R-GMA makes all the information appear like one large Relational Database that may be queried to find the information required. Page 21
