1 Conference Agenda 3rd Annual Smart Grid Conference October 2-3, 2018 Anaheim, CA Register online at
2 Conference at a Glance OVERVIEW For a utility, the building of a Smart Grid enables the connection and participation of customers, services, and new technologies. This conference will focus on the meaning of a Smart Grid as a platform for this connection and participation, and what this means for utilities, including operating technology and operating systems, DER integration, IT with OT integration, and network modeling and monitoring. The conference sessions will cover changing demands on a utility s operation of the power system in the presence of DER and new technologies on the edge of the grid, smart monitoring of the grid for automated operation in the presence of these new services, devices, and technologies, and the integration of a utility s operating systems with enterprise IT systems. THEMES 1Energy Storage and Distributed Renewable Energy Resources Integration with the Grid Customers may choose to self-generate or to store energy, they may choose to own a micro grid that is able to operate off-grid, or they may wish to own renewable energy generation for the purpose of selling into the electricity market. This session will focus on what these customer choices mean to a utility, including the changing functional requirements and capabilities associated with the operation of the grid in such areas as: operating technology and operating systems, distribution automation, system monitoring, fault location, and system restoration. 2Operating the Grid by Integrating IT with OT Modern operation of the grid will realize value through the integration of utility operating systems (OT) with enterprise IT. The growth of resources and technologies on the edge of the grid and the advance of internet-enabled technologies will increase both the opportunities for value and the importance of integration. This session will focus on the opportunities and associated IT systems that are important to integrate, such as AMI data, customer system data, and asset management data. The session will also present experiences and suggestions for integration architecture. 3Cyber Security for the Integration of IT with OT In order to integrate enterprise IT systems and other information sources with operating systems, there is a need to build cyber secure interfaces. This session will focus on requirements and suggestions for cyber security. 4Network Monitoring and Automation The building of a Smart Grid to enable the connection of DER and new services and technologies demands that a utility be able to monitor the grid to allow for advances in automated control and operation. The session will focus on real-time monitoring using the latest in-line sensors and faulted circuit indicators, as well as utility experience and suggestions for the application of monitoring and automation technologies.
3 5Network Modeling and Simulations The building of a Smart Grid also demands that a utility be able to accurately run power system simulations and maintain and use network modeling. This session will focus on utility experience and suggestions for power system simulations, network modeling, and state estimation, including building the network model, data governance for maintenance of the network model, and the leveraging of smart meter data, AMI, and other customer information for network modeling and state estimation. 6Communication Technology for the Monitoring and Control of DER In order to integrate DER effectively with the Grid, there is a need for communication systems to monitor and control these resources and to support the automation of the grid. This session will focus on communication systems and protocols for the integration of DER.
