Forms the northern most part of the Western arm of the East African Rift System Lake Albert Tertiary in age, 500 km long, averaging 45 km wide and 23,000 sq km (Ugandan part) Lake Tanganyika Tanzanian Craton Lake Malawi MALI IV. 5 STATUS OF LICENSING Albertine Graben is currently subdivided into 11 Exploration Areas (EAs) 5 active Production Sharing Agreements (PSAs) Companies licensed are Tullow Oil, Total, CNOOC and Dominion Petroleum INTRODUCTION 5

10 PETROLEUM RESOURCE POTENTIAL 20 oil and/or gas discoveries made to date Appraisal programs and field development planning ongoing Discovered resources currently estimated at ~ 3.5 billion bbls of oil equiv in place Type of crude is API low sulphur, waxy crude, Pour point of ~40 degrees Celsius. Excellent reservoir qualities with 20-30% porosities Well flow rates in the range of 1,000 14,000 bopd indicative of good permeabilities 1

11 OBJECTIVES OF THE NDR Protection and preservation of the country s E&P data for the benefits of future generations; Support licensing activities by making high quality data available quickly to potential investors; and, To strengthen information sharing and exchange of E&P data among the various stakeholders. 1

12 NDR INFRASTRUCTURE Currently semi-permanent storage for: Seismic data tapes well data (reports, logs, CDs) Samples (cores, cuttings, fluids) Future plan for storage in a modern data centre Software: Linux (server), Desktop OS (windows), Geoscience and Mapping, MS office IT infrastructure includes various servers, LAN, Backup and recovery mechanisms 1

16 ACHIEVEMENTS Development of Crane E&P Database currently being populated Transcription of raw seismic data to current industry standards complete Recruitment of one dedicated IT professional (Systems Admin). Recruitment of additional IT staff ongoing. Data management functions incorporated in new legislation 1

17 CHALLENGES Lack of dedicated data management / IT personnel Require additional storage facilities (buildings) and methods that conform to industry standards Need to better define data submission standards/guidelines IT infrastructure require further improvements (small bandwidth, need for automated back-up, etc) Need for more structured training for DM personnel 1

18 FUTURE PLANS Put in place a well defined DM structure within the Petroleum Authority, with dedicated DM staff Development of data submission standards/guidelines Construction of a modern data centre to house core store, geological samples, logs, etc Migration of Crane Dbase to SQL Avail fact maps/pages on web portal and internet Tender the NDR and employ cutting edge E&P DM technology 1
