1 Application Note March 1, 2005 MOTE-VIEW 1.0 Quick Start Guide Martin Turon Smart Dust Technology ABSTRACT This application note describes how to use MOTE-VIEW to visualize sensor readings reported by Crossbow s MICA-series Motes. The included examples are specifically for motes outfitted with MTS300/310 sensor boards running the Surge_Reliable application, but they can be adapted for any MTS/MDA family sensor board running an XSensor application. MOTE-VIEW uses XServe data logging software to insert readings consolidated at a MIB510 interface gateway into a PostgreSQL database. The sensor data can then be displayed within MOTE-VIEW in the form of a spreadsheet, chart, and topological map. INTRODUCTION Data readings from a collection of motes can be collected and displayed by the MOTE- VIEW application. This report describes the how to configure, deploy, and monitor such a sensor network system. Several gateway configuration examples are provided to demonstrate logging readings directly over the UART serial interface with a MIB510 and over a TCP/IP internet connection with a MIB600. A description of how to configure the required PostgreSQL database backend is detailed. The visualization features of MOTE- VIEW greatly reduce the overhead typically associated with analyzing the data generated by large sensor network deployments. 2 MOTE-VIEW Description As shown in Figure 1, the MOTE-VIEW chart view allows plotting of a particular sensor reading over time for multiple nodes. Two other visualization modes are provided: data grid, and topology map. Always visible on the left hand side is the node list, which quickly shows the user what nodes have reported, how they have been named, and how long it has been since data has been received. The upper toolbar provides quick access to the database connection configuration, data logging configuration, application settings, export, print, and print preview respectively. The server messages window at the bottom prints output from the data logger and any error messages from the system. Health of the network can be evaluated quickly by looking at the node list on the left. The colors of the node icon signify how long it has been since data has been received from that node. Green symbolizes a healthy node which has reported within the last 20 minutes. If no new readings are being received, the node color will change to depict the fact that the throughput of the mote has dropped to zero for some time. A node that has not been heard from in a day is red, an hour is orange, 40 minutes is yellow, and 20 minutes is moss green. A Mote that was added by the user, but has never reported in, will be drawn as gray. MOTE-VIEW Installation NOTE: The TinyOS SDK is no longer required to run MOTE-VIEW 1.0. The main installation file is called MoteViewSetup_1.0.0.exe. It can be found on the MOTE-VIEW CD-ROM, or on the web at To install MOTE-VIEW simply run this installer and follow the directions. 3 When installing MOTE-VIEW for the first time, be certain to select all available options in the above screen. The Microsoft.NET Framework, PostgreSQL 8.0 Database, and PostgreSQL ODBC Driver installations are required for all systems, even those running Windows XP, and will require a system reboot to perform properly. After MOTE-VIEW has been installed once, subsequent upgrades or repairs can be done by reinstalling over the existing application and only selecting MOTE-VIEW Application in the installation screen. Note that the PostgreSQL 8.0 Database installation will create a new user on the machine named postgres with a password of p0$tgr3$ (not including the quotes). The PostgreSQL database service will run in the background using this account. MOTE-VIEW Concept of Operations All the visualization tools in MOTE-VIEW require being connected to a database. The database can reside on the local machine, a remote server, or a Stargate. To specify the database that MOTE-VIEW requires to operate, use the Database Server Configuration dialog. An example of connecting to a preexisting server is given in the Connecting to a Stargate section. MOTE-VIEW also allows logging of data to a local database. It is important to be clear on the distinction between the Data Logging settings and the Database settings within MOTE-VIEW. It is possible to log to a local database while viewing entirely different data on a remote server! The standard configuration of interest however is clearly logging data to a local database and viewing those results in real time. An example of setting up MOTE-VIEW in this standard configuration is given in the Logging and Viewing Surge Data Locally section. Connecting to a Stargate A Stargate gateway appliance coupled with the Stargate Server compact flash ( CF ) card will automatically log sensor readings to a database on the CF card. To view sensor data readings on the Stargate, follow this procedure: 1) Open MOTE-VIEW 2) Select menu: File > Connect > Connect to Stargate/Remote Database. See Figure 3 below. 3) Database Server Configuration dialog: a) Set Server textbox to: hostname or IP of the Stargate b) Click Connect c) Select task as the Database. d) Select the Table Name that corresponds the sensor board you have on your Motes. (Usually these Tables have a _results suffix to the sensor board s model number.) e) Click Apply MOTE-VIEW will connect to the database and populate the node list, data view, and topology map. Be sure to click on the Live button to have MOTE-VIEW update from the database at regular intervals. Doc. # Rev. A Page 3

4 Figure 3: Connecting MOTE-VIEW to a database. Logging and Viewing Data Locally In order to log data to your PC ( local machine ), a PostgreSQL database service must be running on it. The MOTE-VIEW install Wizard will set up such a service for you. First, open MOTE-VIEW in the following sequence 1) Start MOTE-VIEW 2) Open the Data Logger dialog window (under File > Connect > Connect to MIB510/MIB600). See Figure 4 below. 3) Select COM port if using an MIB510 or the host s IP address is using an MIB600. 4) Select the Mote application you are connecting to (e.g., Surge) 5) Click on the Start button. 6) Verify packets are received and displayed in Server Messages window or the separate DOS window that s shows the XServe output.
