6 IPEDS 2015 Question about Electronic Library Circulation Report usage of digital/electronic titles whether viewed,downloaded, or streamed. Include usage for e-books and e-media titles only, even if the title was purchased as part of a database. Do not include usage of titles in Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) or Patron- Driven Acquisition (PDA) collections until they have been purchased or leased by the library. Do not include transactions of VHS, CDs, or DVDs, as the transactions of these materials are reported under "physical circulation". Many vendors will provide usage statistics in COUNTER reports. Project COUNTER Code of Practice is available here. Relevant COUNTER reports for e-books are: BR1-Number of Successful Title Requests by Month and Title; and BR2- Number of Successful Section Requests by Month and Title. For media, the report MR1-Number of Successful Multimedia Full Content Unit Requests by Month and Collection, is most relevant. If COUNTER reports are available, IPEDS suggest that libraries report counts from BR1 and MR1. If BR1 and MR1statistics are not available, BR2 and MR2 statistics can be used. In cases where vendors do not provide COUNTERreports, libraries may report using other means for monitoring digital/electronic circulation/usage (downloads, sessionviews, transaction logs, etc.).

10 Databases DB 1 Report Result Clicks - measurement of clicks on a page that's delivered as a result of searching a database. This category also includes any abstract views as well as any other clicks to any other types of content whether internal or external. Record Views - measurement of clicks regarding complete reference, PDF, abstract or full text. Searching a term, retrieving results, browsing content - none of these are counted as a "Record Views" statistic. Neither is clicking on linkout links, through Links@Ovid or LinkSolver. Actions made with the article, by clicking to open it, either abstract or full text, are used for this metric. Searches - Entries into the search box of a database are counted, using this metric. One search is made to retrieve many results.

11 Record Views Report the number of times the detailed metadata of records within the database are viewed, irrespective of whether these records are reached from a set of search/ browse results from the platform or from a link-in from an external source. Record Views are not views of the actual item (e.g. Full Text), but represent a view of the detailed metadata display. Typical examples of Record Views counted in COUNTER Database Reports are views of abstracts, descriptive data on molecular structures, and chemical reactions. You should report the number of times that users click on results from a given database from the result list displayed by a search or browse action on that platform. Result Clicks The Result Click is counted irrespective of whether it takes the user to an internal record within the database searched (e.g. Full Text or an abstract/detailed display), or to an external resource (e.g. an OpenURL link such as findit@mylibrary, a document delivery form).
