SESYNC Model Integration Workshop, Annapolis MD, January 2015 The OpenMI in Practice Tom Bulatewicz, Adjunct Professor Dept. of Computing and Information Sciences
Our Team David R. Steward Joseph A. Aistrup Laszlo Kulcsar Jeffrey M. Peterson Stephen M. Welch Daniel Andresen Eric A. Bernard Scott A. Staggenborg William B. Golden Tom Bulatewicz Civil Engineering Political Science Sociology Agricultural Economics Agronomy / Plant Modeling Computing and Information Sciences Landscape Architecture and Planning Agronomy / Cropping Systems Agricultural Economics Computing and Information Sciences Funded by the NSF Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems (CNH) Program Our focus: Hyper-extractive Economies and Sustainability: Policy Scenarios for Sustainable Water Use in the High Plains Aquifer
Context Water is being extracted from the Ogallala Aquifer faster than it is naturally recharging State economy and livelihood of rural communities relies on groundwater Need to balance society needs with ecosystem needs Natural resource policy development requires comprehensive simulations to understand the socioeconomic impact
Natural-Human Process Interaction Bulatewicz, T., A. Allen, J.M. Peterson, S. Staggenborg, S.M. Welch, D.R. Steward, The Simple Script Wrapper for OpenMI: Enabling interdisciplinary modeling studies, Environmental Modelling & Software, 39 (January), , ISSN , /j.envsoft , 2013.
Models Groundwater Model (Scilab) Analytic Element Method: 8 hours/yr, 2D points Hydrologic Response Function: 2 min/yr, raster Mass Balance: (1 sec/yr), county-scale Crop Choice (MATLAB) Regression model, county-scale, 5 sec/yr Version 1: Retrospective only Version 2: Forward simulation Crop Production (FORTRAN) EPIC: Legacy model, 1 sec/yr, site-scale Economic Impact (C#) Crop production to cash flow combined with economic impact multipliers to calculate employment impact Demographic Change (Python Post-processing) Calculates population change based on employment change
Integration Approach In an interdisciplinary context, scientists must be able to work with the methods and tools customary in their domains Model linking (loose coupling) is often the only practical solution Build/change models to be easily linkable by conforming to a standard Build specialized linking tools ad-hoc for specific sets of models
The Open Modeling Interface EU Fifth Framework Program A standardized way for independent model components to exchange data and coordinate their execution
Overview A model performs time steps as-needed when another model asks for data Per the OpenMI Standard, a model may only ask for input (i.e. GetValues) from one model at a time For example, Model A must wait until it receives data from Model C before asking Model B for input
Overview A model performs time steps as-needed when another model asks for data Per the OpenMI Standard, a model may only ask for input (i.e. GetValues) from one model at a time For example, Model A must wait until it receives data from Model C before asking Model B for input
User Interface
Wrapping Models Wrappers enable models to interact through OpenMI The wrappers execute the models as independent programs The wrappers communicate with the models via file input and output Bulatewicz, T., X. Yang, J. M. Peterson, S. Staggenborg, S. M. Welch, and D. R. Steward: Accessible integration of agriculture, groundwater, and economic models using the Open Modeling Interface (OpenMI): methodology and initial results, Hydrol. Earth Syst. Sci., 14, , doi: / hess , 2010.
Using Scripting Languages We created a Simple Script Wrapper component that makes it easy to write a model in MATLAB, Scilab, or Python and link it to other OpenMIcompliant components Bulatewicz, T., A. Allen, J.M. Peterson, S. Staggenborg, S.M. Welch, D.R. Steward, The Simple Script Wrapper for OpenMI: Enabling interdisciplinary modeling studies, Environmental Modelling & Software, 39 (January), , ISSN , /j.envsoft , 2013.
Data Sources as Components We created a Data Component that can serve as an intermediary between models and online services Compute Cluster Compute Node Composition Data Manager Web Services Data Manager DC DC Model Model Model Model DC DC Model Model Model Model T. Bulatewicz, D. Andresen, S. Auvenshine, J. Peterson, D.R. Steward, A distributed data component for the Open Modeling Interface, Environmental Modelling & Software, Volume 57, July 2014, Pages , ISSN
Supporting Parallelism Parallelism is possible by relaxing the guidelines to allow a model to invoke GetValues simultaneously on all its dependencies T. Bulatewicz and D. Andresen. Accessible parallelization for the Open Modeling Interface. In Proceedings of XSEDE14 extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment Atlanta, GA, USA. July
Selected Results Bulatewicz, T., X. Yang, J. M. Peterson, S. Staggenborg, S. M. Welch, and D. R. Steward: Accessible integration of agriculture, groundwater, and economic models using the Open Modeling Interface (OpenMI): methodology and initial results, Hydrol. Earth Syst. Sci., 14, , doi: / hess , 2010.
Project Retrospective As the extent of integration increased, model complexity decreased We started with fewer, existing models that were complex, had high spatial detail, with longer runtimes We ended with more models, with greater support for integration, that were simpler, had lower spatial granularity, and executed quickly Simplicity of models (and interactions between them) was important to telling the story Thinking about integration early-on gave modelers direction on how new models should be designed to enable integration later-on The OpenMI fit our needs for model linking, however, utilizing it required programming expertise Involvement by computing faculty gave the team more options for integration methods and utilizing high-performance computing
