1 INTRO TO DESIGN J-399 FALL TERM STEVEN ASBURY Fall 2013 M,W, 4-5:50 p.m. Steven Asbury Office hours: M, W, 3-4 p.m. I m also typically available to meet with students after class. Don t hesitate to ask for additional time. I can usually accommodate students who need extra help or feedback and often assist students during the weekends in Allen Hall. sasbury@uoregon.edu Website: Course Objectives Think critically, creatively and independently as a visual journalist. To understand fundamental design concepts and apply appropriate visual communication theories in the effective use and presentation of images and information. To understand and be able to effectively use typography, the primary tool of visual communication. Grading Grades will be based on the following formula: Participation/Discussion* 25% Design projects/in-class exercises 25% Quizzes 25% Final Project 25% Attendance is mandatory, and it s important that you contribute to class discussions and critiques. I ll also be looking for improvement in your designs each week. * Actively participating in group critiques and Tweeting about design topics are both vital to earning your participation grade. Each of you should have a Twitter account, and you are encouraged to Tweet from class. Suggested hashtags are #J-399 and #lifeasajstudent. Be sure to Deadlines In the real world of journalism, a missed deadline by a designer can cost a company thousands of dollars in overtime, lost customers and missed opportunities. Please note that you need to allocate time for computer crashes, closed computer labs, printing problems, acts of nature, and other contingencies. Late work will RECEIVE AN AUTOMATIC ONE-LETTER-GRADE REDUCTION. Your work needs to be completed and printed before class begins. Assignments that are being printed or finished after class has started will be considered late. Group critiques I believe in group critiques for two reasons. First, it s how it works in the real world. Second, I believe that collaboration produces a better result. As with any critique-based class, there will be some students who consistently produce better work than others. I don t believe that anyone s work is perfect and will do my part to offer constructive criticism to everyone. However, it is likely that one or two students might have more experience and, therefore, draw less criticism. Please don t take this personally. I get as much enjoyment as an instructor helping a student with little experience improve as helping someone who has a lot of experience refine their skills. Both types of students can earn an A in this course.

2 Attendance Attendance is required. In professional design, you re expected to show up for work no matter how much partying you did the night before. Makeup work will be allowed in the case of unavoidable circumstances, but I need to be told about this before the class is scheduled to meet, either in person or . Acceptable excuses include a religious holiday, family emergency, or a job interview that cannot be rescheduled. Missing classes without an valid excuse will lower your grade. Attendance will be taken daily. The instructor s grade book is the official record. Come to class on time. Being late for class or leaving early will count as partial absence at the instructor s discretion. No missed classes without a doctor s note, proof of a job interview or verification of a family emergency or religious holiday. All other absences will be considered unexcused and may result in a one-letter-grade reduction for the course. Three absences may result in failure of the course. If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to contact the instructor prior to the class and be up to date for the next class. Final project At the end of the term you will turn in a design project. You may choose the type of design project, but it should meet the following criteria. 1. The project should show your mastery of the course objectives and what you ve learned about design and visual communication. 2. The project should be large enough that it s worthy of 25 percent of your grade. Do not, for example, do a one-piece postcard and call that your final project. Ideas for projects could include a publication redesign, an advertising campaign across media or a website redesign. Diversity It is the policy of the University of Oregon to support and value diversity. We re committed to the following. Respecting the dignity and essential worth of all individuals. Promoting a culture of respect throughout the University community. Respecting the privacy, property, and freedom of others. Rejecting bigotry, discrimination, violence, or intimidation of any kind. Practicing personal and academic integrity and expect it from others. Promoting the diversity of opinions, ideas and backgrounds which is the lifeblood of the university. Special Needs Please notify your instructor within the first two weeks of class if there are aspects of this course that cause barriers to your participation. You may wish to contact the Accessible Education Center (formerly Disability Services) in 164 Oregon Hall at or uoaec.uoregon.edu. If English is not your first language and you are uncomfortable conversing in it, please see an instructor. Academic English for International Students (AEIS) is part of the American English Institute, and is located in 107 Pacific Hall ( It administers placement tests on pre-arranged dates and places ESL students in classes such as AEIS 110, 111, and 112 (also called Written Discourse I, II, and III). For questions about AEIS: (541) For questions about English requirements for international students, call the Office of International Affairs, (541) Labs Please respect the rules regarding food and drink in the computer labs. Academic dishonesty You re expected to do your own designing in this class. Copying designs from the internet or other sources will result in an F in this course. Important passages in the Student Conduct Code are in the Schedule of Classes.
