2 International Orientation The Williams College commnity is excited to welcome yo to camps on Friday Agst 25th! Before yo arrive, there is some important information to know, so we created this presentation. Let s know if yo have any qestions and/or concerns.

3 Who are we? As yo may already know, my name is Ninah Pretto and I am the Assistant Dean of International Stdent Services at Williams College. I am yor primary contact for all things related to yor stats as an international stdent on-camps. I am located in the Dean s Office in Hopkins Hall and my walk in hors are Tesday & Thrsday from 2-4 pm. In addition, yo have an amazing grop of International Orientation Leaders (IOLS), who serve as peer mentors and will spport yo in yor transition to camps, Williamstown and the srronding area. 4 Applying for an F-1 Stdent Visa By now, yo shold have sbmitted the Form I-20 application (& transfer form if yo are already in F-1 stats), Certificate of Finance Form and a copy of the pictre page of yor passport to the Assistant Dean of International Stdent Services. If so, yo have received yor Form I-20 Certificate of Eligibility Form and SEVIS I- 901 Receipt by mail. 5 Applying for an F-1 Stdent Visa With limited exceptions, all Williams College international stdents applying for admission to the U.S. mst hold an F-1 stdent visa. Below is an otline of the steps to obtain an F-1 visa, however yo shold contact yor local embassy/conslate for more contry specific information. Complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160) for F-1 stats. Be prepared to present the following at the U.S. Embassy/Conslate visa interview Form I-20 Passport (valid at least 6 months SEVIS Fee Payment Receipt beyond yor program start date) DS-160 Confirmation Receipt Proof of English Langage Proficiency Passport sized photo Williams College Acceptance Evidence of financial spport Information Evidence that yo have no intention of abandoning residence in yor home contry

6 Stdents who already hold an F-1 Stdent Visa If yo already hold an F-1 visa that has not expired, yo do not have to get a new F-1 visa as long as yo have not been ot of the U.S. for more than 5 consective months. If yo have been ot of the U.S. for more than 5 consective months, then yo mst obtain a new F-1 visa if yo plan on traveling dring yor stdies.

7 Exceptions to the visa reqirement Citizens of Canada (and Bermda, the Bahamas, and British sbjects resident in certain islands) are not reqired to apply for an entry visa to the U.S. Even so, Canadians are sbject to the rles and reglations of the F-1 stats. It is especially important for Canadian stdents to be vigilant abot entering the U.S. in proper stdent stats, as immigration inspectors are accstomed to admitting Canadian citizens as visitors. To enter the U.S. in F-1 stdent stats, Canadians mst present the below to the Cstoms and Border Patrol (CBP)officer: Form I-20 Passport Spporting financial docments SEVIS Fee payment receipt

8 Carry important docments with yo when yo travel to the U.S. Make sre to take yor important docments with yo in yor carry on the airplane/car/bs/train. Yo will be asked to show them to the CBP officer at the port of entry (POE). Passport F-1 visa Form I-20 On occasion, confirmation of William s College acceptance and financial spport docments.

9 Arriving in the U.S. Yo mst plan to arrive on-camps on Agst 25, 2017 for International Orientation. Yo are not permitted to enter the U.S. earlier than 30 days prior to the program start date, which is the first day of classes, September 07, Everyone arriving at the port of entry to the U.S is sbject to inspection by Cstoms and Border Protection (CBP) officers for compliance with immigrations, cstoms, agricltre reglation. CBP is a branch of the Department of Homeland Secrity (DHS). Yo will learn more abot the varios branches of DHS at International Orientation. If for any reason yo are referred to secondary inspection, please remain calm. CBP officers may need to condct additional review of yor docments in order to verify yor information. If yo carry the docments specified in this modle, yo shold not enconter this sitation. I will be providing yo with an emergency cell-phone nmber in case the CBP officer needs to confirm any information with Williams College.

10 Electronic Device Search U.S. Cstoms and Border protection and U.S. Immigration and Cstoms Enforcement agents can search all travelers electronic devices, whether they are U.S. nationals or visitors from other contries. If travelers refse to hand over their devices or comply in any way, inclding providing passwords, agents cold detain yo or seize the device. Visa holders and torists can be denied entry if they do not comply. Less than 1% of travelers have had their devices checked, however checks are increasing. This type of check does not happen at primary inspection, only at secondary inspection.

11 I-94 Arrival & Departre Record The I-94 is the Arrival & Departre Record and it is now in electronic format issed by CBP Officer. Yo will be provided with a an annotated stamp in yor passport that states yor stats and the amont of time yo can say in the U.S. Please make sre that yors states yo are in F-1 stats and D/S (dration of stdy). Yo will be able to print yor I-94 docment at any time. It will track yor arrival and departre history.

12 Mandatory Check-In After arrival in the U.S., stdents shold not make international travel plans ntil Mandatory Check-In with the Assistant Dean of International Stdent Services has been completed. All international stdents are reqired to check-in within 30 days after classes start. Yo will receive more information abot Mandatory Check-in at International Orientation.

15 Transportation from Albany Airport On Friday Agst 25 th there will be shttles available from Albany International Airport to camps. There will be a GLT representative and IOLS to meet yo at the arrivals/baggage claim area. They will direct yo to the appropriate shttle and monitor delayed flights to re-accommodate stdents on the next available shttle to Williams College.
