1 Video and SMART Notebook There are several educational benefits to showing a video in Notebook. In addition to being able to capture images, you will have stylus options for annotating over the video. Both of these are great ways to point out important parts of the video. Before doing the conversion below, you first need to download and save video, maybe from United Streaming, TeacherTube, or other video files. Before doing this, you will need to download two free programs from the Internet. RAD Video Tools Riva FLV Encoder So now, here s what you need to do: 1. Open RAD Video Tools. (It will be in Start, Programs, Bink and Smacker, RAD Video Tools.) 2. Navigate to the location you saved the video. You may need to make sure All Media Files have been selected in the Files of Types option. 3. Select the video to convert and click Convert a File. 4. Click Output Type and select AVI files. 5. Click Convert. 6. At the Video Compression window, click OK. 7. Once the converter is done, click Done. You can close the RAD Video Tools. The new AVI video file should now be saved in the same place as the original video just converted..avi videos can be played in the SMART Video Player. This is explained on page 3 of this document. Or convert the.avi file to a.flv (flash video) that will play directly in Notebook. Read on.... 1

2 The Riva Encoder will covert.avi files to.flv files which will directly play in Notebook. 1. Open the Riva FLV Encoder. Go to Start, Programs, Riva, Riva FLV Encoder. 2. Click the Input Browse and navigate to the location of the AVI video either already saved or the file just created from page Click the Output Browse and navigate to the location you want the new flash video saved. (Maybe your desktop or your My Videos folder?) 4. Click Encode and the file will be converted. Your video will be converted and saved to your selected location. Finally, to insert into Notebook 1. With Notebook open, go to Insert, Video File. 2. Navigate to the saved location of your encoded video. 3. Select the video and click Open. 4. This will insert the video into Notebook. Click the play button to view the video. So, this is a great trick and all, but why would you want to play a video in Notebook? What can it do? 2

3 What is the real power behind converting video to play it in Notebook? Annotating and capturing are two. I ll explain here... First, the video controllers arrow cursor stylus colors annotation deletion play stop capture stylus line thickness full screen volume options SMART Video Player will play.asf and.avi video files. With a video playing in SMART Video Player, once you pick up a stylus, the video pauses, waiting for you to make your teachable moment or annotation. Once the stylus is replaced, the video resumes. When is this handy? - labeling pictures in the video - cross sections - discussion of eras, cultures, religions brought out in the video/images - just pausing for students to take a few notes! The other power mentioned above is capturing an image from the video for future use. 1. With the video playing, click the capture button. 2. The image will capture into Notebook. Now images can be saved a referred to in the future without replaying the entire video. 3

4 Video Code Zone The great thing about Video Code Zone is that the website will download and convert online videos from sources such as Google videos, YouTube and others. You don t need to download any programs. It will convert your videos to an.avi format for playing in SMART Video Player. However, it does not support TeacherTube or United Streaming. 1. Find your online educational video. 2. Highlight and copy the video URL. 3. Go to php If it s your first time at the site, you will need to set up an account. 4. Paste the video URL into the From URL field. 5. Select the Output Format. Selecting an.avi will convert this video to play in SMART Player. 6. Click the Convert/Download button. However, this only converts the video. 7. Now you need to download your video. It s only available for download for one hour. Click the Download link to complete your conversion and download. 8. This will open your video in Windows Media Player. Now you can save the video to your local computer. Once the video is saved, insert like normal into SMART Video Player or other program. 4

5 Keepvid Keepvid is another website that coverts for you. Again, Keepvid does not support United Streaming and TeacherTube. However, Keepvid converts videos to a.flv format the format to insert into SMART Notebook. 1. Find your online educational video. 2. Highlight and copy the video URL. 3. Go to 4. Paste your URL into the Download video field. Click the Download button. This will convert the video from the online format to a.flv. 5. Now you need to actually download the video. Click the >>Download Link<< link, click save, rename your video (name.flv), navigate to the location to save and click the save button. Once you have your video saved in a flash video format (.flv) you can insert it directly to Notebook. Play like normal. Now you can save video directly into your Notebook files. 5
