2 Welcome Welcome to North West Kent College whether you are returning or joining us for the first time, we hope that you will enjoy learning with us. This guide is designed to help you to understand and navigate the IT resources available to you while you study at North West Kent College. Resources There is a number of IT resources at your disposal and depending on your course will depend to what extent you use them. But even if you are not doing a course that requires the use of IT there are many cool facilities and tools that you may wish to explore. The main resources are: Access to the College network from both in college and from home (using college equipment or your own) Access to limited printing Access to the internet Access to Access to online learning materials, ebooks and other resources Access to online course tracking Access to online Virtual Learning Environment called Moodle Many software packages for use in your course Your college identity While you study at North West Kent College we will provide you with a College identity which will allow you to login and use the resources previously mentioned. This identity is linked to your enrolment and your network login / / Moodle and other accounts will create automatically within 24 hours after you enrol and will expire automatically one month after your course has completed to allow you to complete any outstanding work and tidy up. Components of this identity are: YOUR Name The name given during enrolment (Printed on YOUR student card) YOUR student number the unique number created for you during enrolment (Printed on YOUR student card) YOUR College address created using your name when your College identity is created We realise that you have an identity outside of the College and may have your own address/s and social network accounts, but while at the College we will mostly communicate with you using the College account created for you. If you wish to connect your College account (identity) to your private account/s so that you do not miss anything we will be happy to assist and instructions for this will be available on Moodle. BE AWARE COLLEGE STAFF ARE ONLY PERMITTED TO COMMUNICATE VIA COLLEGE ACCOUNTS Student IT Guide Page 1

3 Your College Identity also provides you with other services as well as follows: Access to the Dartford campus via the entrance turnstiles Access to the refectories (cafeteria) to buy food and drinks Access to the FREE College shuttle bus services Access to the College Learning technology Centre (Library) facilities How to log in to the College Network using college equipment The college has a number of types of equipment available for you to use and will require a log in using your College identity. These are: Microsoft OS PCs Mac OS PCs Mac OS and Android OS data pads Konica Mopiers to print / copy and scan To log in to any device you will always use the same USER ID and NETWORK PASSWORD linked to your previously mentioned identity. YOUR USER ID = Student Number (usually an eight digit number on your student card) YOUR INITIAL PASSWORD = password (and you will be required to change this on first login) after then it won t change or expire so keep it safe and NEVER GIVE IT TO ANYONE. On first login you will also be asked to provide answers to four security questions in case you forget your password or become locked out. PLEASE answer these correctly to avoid problems later. You will be shown how to login during your Learning Technology Centre (LTC) induction which should happen in the first few weeks of the academic year and as mentioned before, you will use this same USER ID and NETWORK PASSWORD to access all the IT systems that you have access to in the College including Moodle, Printing, Office 365 and computer access. Internet access While at North West Kent College you will have access to the internet to do research and complete assignments. This is a free service available to students that is monitored and filtered. Should you wish to access a website that is blocked that you think should be open, then please ask your tutor to log a request with the IT Department including all the relevant information and it will be reviewed. For you to access the internet, you will need to be logged in to the College network by one of the following methods: By logging into your College Network Account via a College PC By logging into your College Network Account via a College Mac PC By logging into the College network via the STUDENT wireless network service using your College Network Account details Student IT Guide Page 2

4 Microsoft Office 365 The College has provided the cloud service called Microsoft Office 365 for you to use while studying at North West Kent College. This service gives you access to the following services: Microsoft Outlook with 25GB storage Microsoft Outlook calendar linked to for setting appointments and creating schedules Microsoft Office Web Apps for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote so that you will always have access to the tools you need Microsoft SkyDrive Pro with 7GB storage for files and photos that is accessible from any device as long as internet is available Microsoft Newsfeeds to link with friends at College Microsoft sites for links to other useful sites and resources You can access Office 365 using or from the icon on your College PC desktop, using your College USER (identity) and College Network Password described earlier. For example if your USER ID was then your Office 365 Login ID would be Your address unless otherwise stated would be your name and surname (no spaces or dots For example if you were Joe Blogs then your address will be The first time you log into Office 365 you will see the following welcome screen: Student IT Guide Page 3

5 Which will give you support and instructions on how to setup and get started and will even help you get connected from your mobile phone. Note the bar alone the top This is where you can control your account and access the tools you need as follows: 1 = Office 365 support, templates and apps 2 = Alerts (like incoming messages) 3 = Outlook 4 = Outlook Calendar 5 = People (Address Book) for contacts 6 = Newsfeed (social network to follow others and be followed) 7 = SkyDrive Pro (files, folders and photos) Student IT Guide Page 4

6 8 = Access to the Student Team Site and your My Site (when available) 9 = Your Profile and Sign out 10 = Office 365 Settings including your profile, software, password and start-up help 11 = Online HELP Microsoft Outlook This is a web app that functions as a full Microsoft Exchange system allowing you to send and receive , create folders, flag and categorise NOTE 1 = Compose new mail 2 = Inbox 3 = File attachment 4 = Reply 5 = Preview For full support and Howto s goto Student IT Guide Page 5

7 Microsoft SkyDrive Pro You will still have access to a very small H Drive on the college servers that will keep your preferences, favourites and desktop. All the files that you create for college work needs to be stored in SkyDrive on Office 365. You have 7GB of storage space for files, folders and photos. Don t confuse Office 365 with Moodle which is a virtual Learning Environment where tutors will require you to upload assignments or eportfolios where you might be asked to store work as evidence. Once in SkyDrive: To add files simply click on New Document and select: Word Document to open a new Microsoft Word Document in Web App Mode Excel Document to open a new Microsoft Excel Document in Web App Mode PowerPoint - to open a new Microsoft PowerPoint Document in Web App Mode OneNote - to open a new Microsoft OneNote Document in Web App Mode Excel Survey - to open a new Microsoft Excel Survey Document in Web App Mode New Folder to create a new folder Upload Existing to browse to and upload existing files Once a file is on SkyDrive you can open and edit using the included Web App or the actual software if installed. 9 = Information (Posts) 2 = Links to information and services 3 = Access to ebrary for FREE e-books 4 = Login to Office 365 for and files 5 = Your Personal Learning Plan (PLP targets to keep your learning on track) 6 = Login to Moodle using your Network User ID and Password to access course material and assignments PRINTING The College provides each student with 12 worth of printing after which you will have to buy top-up cards from the Learning Technology Centres. Top-up cards are available in 1, 2, 5 and 10 denominations. To redeem a top-up card log into PaperCut from the footprint widget on your desktop using your Network Login and Password (described earlier). Student IT Guide Page 8

10 For 2013 / 14 printing will be charged at the following rates for printing and copying (scanning is free): Mopier (Multi-Function Print Copy and Scan machines) A4 Black & White = 0.02p per page A4 Colour = 0.08p per page A3 Black & White = 0.04p per page A3 Colour = 0.16p per page 30% Discount on any duplex (double sided) job Stand Alone Laser Printers A4 Black & White = 0.03p per page A4 Colour = 0.16p per page A3 Black & White = 0.06p per page A3 Colour = 0.32p per page 30% Discount on any duplex (double sided) job Inkjet Printers A4 Black & White = 0.24p per page A4 Colour = 0.48p per page A3 Black & White = 0.48p per page A3 Colour = 0.96p per page 30% Discount on any duplex (double sided) job For courses where printing is a part of the course like photography or secretarial, extra printing may have been incorporated as part of your material fees and you will need to talk to your tutors. Leaving the classrooms to print is not permitted and any print jobs sent will remain in the queue for 120 minutes (2 hours) and can be collected after class. Support If you have any issues with the resources or services provided by North West Kent College, then please talk to your course tutor who will log a support request on your behalf. North West Kent College has a zero tolerance policy regarding bullying and cyber bullying. If you are being threatened or bullied in any way, then again contact your course tutor who will report the matter to the IT Department where it will be investigated.
