Now you re at Sussex, you have access to a wide range of computing resources and services. This booklet introduces the services that are available. To find out more on any of the subjects in this booklet, visit our website: connecting to the internet sussex.ac.uk/its/welcome where you can find frequently asked questions, helpful videos, links and further guidance on everything to do with IT at Sussex. You must install antivirus software if you connect your own Windows PC to the campus network! See p19 2
You can use the University wi-fi network and if you live in one of the residences, you can also use the wired connection in your room. You ll need your IT username and password to get online. See p5 Wired If you live in one of the residences, use the wired access for quicker internet speeds. Connect your computer to the wall socket with the pink cable provided in your room. Wi-fi (eduroam) You can connect to the wi-fi network, known as eduroam, with many mobile devices. It s available in most of the campus, including the residences. Follow the How to connect booklet to get access to the wi-fi or wired networks with your laptop, phone or tablet or see our website sussex.ac.uk/its/connect Any problems? IT Services can help. See our website or visit the IT Service Desk in Shawcross or the Help Point in the Library. 3
campus computers There are about 850 PCs and Macs around the campus for students to use with many areas available 24/7. See the map on pages TRL + ALT + DELETE to Show consideration for your fellow students by avoiding personal browsing at busy times and logging off if you re going to be leaving a PC for more than a few minutes. 4 Log on If the PC screen is blank, press a button on the keyboard to wake it up. Enter your IT username (e.g. ano23) and password to log on. If you see an error message saying no servers are available, count to ten and try again - it gives the PC a bit more time to wake up!
Using IT Services computers You can browse the internet, check your and use the customised set of programs installed on each PC to support your work at Sussex. Log off Remember to log off when you ve finished using a PC. You don t need to turn off the power - it will automatically hibernate to save energy if not in use. Your IT username and password These are the details you received as part of the online registration process. Your username is normally made up of your initials followed by a number, such as ano23. You will use your IT username and password to login to campus computers and for most other services at Sussex such as your University and other web-based systems. Change your password If you like, you can change your password to something easier to remember. See p14 5
saving your work When you start as a student, you are allocated a quota of personal file space where you can save your documents. This is called your home directory or N: drive and you can get access to it from any of the computers on the campus. For example, if you save files in your Documents folder, you will be able to get back to them when you login to any other computer on the campus, just by choosing Documents from the start menu. 10GB You get 10GB of space for files in your home directory. 6
Always have a back up It s a good idea to keep the files you re currently working on in more than one place, for example by saving copies on a USB stick or on a web-based file service such as Skydrive or Google. Working from When opening an attachment from an , choose Save As and give your file a permanent home (such as your Documents folder) before you start making changes to it.! If you don t, your file is stored in a temporary location and will be deleted when you close it along with all of the changes you ve made. 7

You can top up using a credit or debit card in Sussex Direct or with cash in the Printing Account Banking Stations in the Library and Shawcross.
