3 INTRODUCTION The Question and Testing Interoperability (QTI) Mobile Player allows you to remotely assess learners on the job, using evidence gathered electronically. Using the iqtim Player on the iphone, learners can be tested through oral questions or demonstrations of tasks in the workplace. Their results are then packaged with any additional evidence such as photos and automatically ed back to you. This electronic record of assessment can then be stored on your computer. PURPOSE No more carting boxes of paperwork to drill sites No more travelling with cumbersome laptops to remote areas No more storing of tons of paper records in the office No more double entry recording of results No more getting to the site only to find you need a different assessment than the one you brought with you No more inconsistency of assessment tools. 3

4 SETTING UP MY IPHONE iqti Mobile Player is an application that will be available for purchase from the App Store on your iphone. To access the App Store you will need to download the Apple itunes program to your computer and create an App Store account. 3 Steps Download itunes to my computer Create an itunes App Store account Install iqti Mobile Player 4

5 DOWNLOAD ITUNES TO MY COMPUTER Go to Click itunes Click Download Now and follow the prompts 5

6 CREATE AN ITUNES APP STORE ACCOUNT Open itunes on your computer and click Store From the Store drop down menu select Create Account. You may need to enter your Credit Card details for future purchases but please note that this application will not be charged to your account. Make a note of your username and password. You will need this to access the App Store on your iphone when downloading iqti Mobile Player. 6

7 Viewing online? If you don t intend to make any future purchases at the itunes Store follow this link will to see how to create an itunes account without using a credit card. GET YOUR PHONE A UNIQUE ID (UNIQUE DEVICE IDENTIFIER) Your RTO will need to register with Apple a UDID for your iphone so Apple can approve the application. It is like a serial number but is a combination of 40 numbers and letters that uniquely identify your phone. To obtain the UDID you can install and use free applications on your iphone such as Ad Hoc helper or UDID Pro which create an with your UDID. Tap here and type UDID then tap Search at the bottom of the screen When an application such as Ad Hoc helper or UDID Pro is located tap the icon then swipe FREE > This will then change to INSTALL Tap again to 7

8 install to your iphone. Tap the UDID icon. Here you are required to complete the information and forward to your RTO administrator. Alternatively you can copy and paste from itunes when your phone is connected. Click on Serial Number and it will change to your UDID. To find out more about the UDID follow this link: 8

9 INSTALLING THE IQTI PLAYER 2. Click the Apps tab here 3. Check iqti tick box 1. Your iphone name will be displayed here 4. Click Synch 9

10 Your iphone name should now be visible in the left had side menu under DEVICES. Click on your iphone Device in this section and then click the Apps tab at the top of the page. Select the iqti app Tick Box and then click Synch at the bottom of the screen. If you have followed the above steps successfully you should see the iqti icon on your iphone Home screen. The final step is to activate the iqti Player. Tap the Settings icon on the Home screen of your iphone. Scroll down to iqti and tap > At this stage you may need to enter some information from your RTO such as network username and a default address. 10

11 SET UP MY ACCOUNT Assessments from the iqti Player can be sent to any address you choose. If you currently have an account configured on your iphone that you wish to use then you do not need to follow these steps. On the Home screen tap Mail icon If you have not previously created an account you should be presented with a Welcome to Mail screen. Select the type of account and enter the required information If you have already setup on your iphone and wish to create an additional account for iqti use, tap Settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account. Enter the required information to create a new account If you choose to use a Microsoft Exchange (Outlook) account you will need to enter the domain name and mail server address to complete the configuration. Otherwise it is suggested you use or create a Gmail account 11

13 DOWNLOADING ASSESSMENTS TO YOUR IPHONE PERFORMING AN ASSESSMENT Tap the iqti icon on your iphone Home Screen From the Main Menu tap Download Enter a search term to describe the assessment you wish to use. It is recommended you search for the qualification code or unit code 13

14 Select the assessment you wish to use with the iqti Player Tap Download Assessments Tap Main Menu and then New Assessment. You should see the newly downloaded assessment on this screen: 14

15 START ASSESSING A LEARNER Tap the iqti icon on your iphone Home Screen From the Main Menu tap New Assessment Select a previously downloaded assessment you wish to use Select the candidate who is going to be assessed from your Contact List Select type of assessment e.g. Workplace Observation or Oral Questions 15

16 Select the question Tap YES or NO in response to the candidate s answer Continue until all the questions you wish to ask have been recorded If you do not wish add any comments or additional evidence you can this assessment now. Add your address and tap Send You will receive the results as an attached html file. It is advised to store these results in dedicated folders on a drive on your computer or network that is regularly backed up 16

17 ADDING EVIDENCE At the end of the questions you can attach relevant photo evidence: New Picture: Use the camera on your iphone to take a photograph Existing Picture: Select the photo from your iphone Camera Roll 17

18 ADDING COMMENTS At the end of the questions you can also add comments. These will be displayed at the end of the assessment.html file that is ed back to you. assessment.html Add comments then tap Complete a Tool On the next screen tap 18

22 SENDING THE ASSESSMENT BACK VIA When the assessment is complete tap Tap To: to bring up the keypad. Enter your address and tap Send. This may take a few minutes. It will automatically be sent when your iphone is in network range if you have no signal. You will receive the assessment as an attached file called assessment.html It will show questions, responses, and additional comments 22

24 FAQ S Q: How do I know if an assessment has been sent to my address successfully? A: From the Main Menu there is an option to view Sent Assessments. Q: Can I resend an after it has disappeared from the In Progress menu? A: Yes. From the Main Menu tap Sent Assessments, select the name of candidate and tap to send again. Q: What if haven t finished assessing a candidate? A: Unfinished assessments are automatically stored in the In Progress menu until you ready to complete. Select the candidate to continue the assessment. Q: I am searching for an assessment in the Download menu but there are no hits for my search. A: Try searching by the qualification code or the unit code from the Training Package. Q: When I tap a new assessment, the candidates name does not appear on the All Contacts screen. A: You need to add the candidate s name to your iphone Contacts prior to performing an assessment. 24

25 Q: How do I attach assessment evidence to the assessment report? A: Before submitting an assessment, the QTIm Player will give you the option to attach a picture stored on your iphone or to take a new picture. Q: What type of assessment tools can be used with iqti? A: Multiple Choice Questions, Oral Questions, Observation Checklists. Q: What is a validated assessment tool? A: A validated assessment tool has been through a process where assessors compare and evaluate the questions against the AQTF competency standards. Q: What assessment evidence can I add to the assessment report? A: You can add photographs taken on your iphone. Q: How does my assessment report get into the student management system? A: The assessment reports include results in XML format, which could be automatically imported into a student management system if such a system already exists within the organisation. However, the usual method is to enter the results manually. 25

26 GLOSSARY QTI Question and Test Interoperability. It is a standard maintained by the IMS Global Consortium ( QTI Creator The QTI creator will allow teachers and trainers to create QTI (Question and Test Interoperability) assessment items. The QTI creator is currently being developed between New England Institute of TAFE, Tasmanian Polytechnic and Tasmanian Skills Institute with funding from the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. Compass is a networked database for constructing, storing and sharing assessment tools with the Tasmanian Polytechnic and Skills Institute. There are assessment templates for 14 different forms of evidence. AD HOC Helper and UDID Pro These are examples of free applications available from IPhone App Store that assign a unique id to your phone itunes itunes is a proprietary digital media player application, used for playing and organizing digital music and video files. 26

27 APPENDIX HOW IT WORKS The QTI Mobile Player is an assessment tool for use on handheld devices. It is compliant to Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) Standards and is built to the IMS Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) standards. The player allows trainers and assessors to assess on the job, record their assessments and gather evidence electronically. Once this is done they can then the results back into the organisation s IT systems. If the assessor is not in a NextG area, the results are held on the device until the device connects a NextG network. Then the results are automatically sent off. 27

29 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OVERVIEW QTI, which stands for Question and Test Interoperability, is an international standard for transmitting questions, tests and their results between systems in an XML format. Control of the standard is managed by IMS Global Learning Consortium ( Detailed information on the standard is available through their website. The QTIm Player is a program that interprets and displays a QTI package. A QTI package is an archive (zip file), which contains a set of resources and a manifest of these resources in XML format. An excellent guide to the concepts involved in IMS Content Packaging is available at ( The QTIm Player supports a subset of the available QTI interactions: textentryinteraction allows for short answers extendedtextinteraction allows for paragraph long answers choiceinteraction allows for multiple choice questions uploadinteraction allows the attachment of documents or photos This set of interactions allows for direct typing, multiple choice questions and the ability to attach files and photographs to assessments. It is regarded as being sufficient for performing most types of assessment. Once an assessment has been performed and the results saved, the QTIm Player rearchives the content package. Any file attachments are added to the archive, in addition to a session file. The latter records unique session data, which can be used to verify that the file transmission process has been completed successfully. A HTML document, with all of the recorded assessment results in human readable form, is also produced by the 29

30 QTIm Player. This file, and the archive, are then attached to an and sent to an address specified in the settings. 30
