1 Vanderbilt University BlackBerry Setup Guide (BES & Exchange OWA) There are two methods of configuring your BlackBerry device to connect to the Vanderbilt system. Always make sure that the handheld is provisioned with a BlackBerry data plan. A standard data plan can cause connectivity issues. Verizon customers should dial *22899 on their devices before proceeding, to sync the phone with Verizon. As a precaution, the BlackBerry user should then remove and reinsert the battery before proceeding. The first option is the preferred and supported configuration at Vanderbilt University. This configures you for full , contact, calendar, and task synchronization. To use this option, a purchase requisition of $69.90 has to be faxed to ITS at and your LSP must send an request to ITS. The fax needs to include the user s VUnetID, cell number, address and Blackberry PIN number (found on the Blackberry under Options>Status ). A ticket is then created at Collaborative Messaging at VUMC. Once the user is added to the BlackBerry server, an will be sent to the user. The user will then need to contact their LSP if they need assistance configuring the device. For a list of LSPs: The second method will only be supported by your wireless carrier. Vanderbilt University does not support this configuration and does not guarantee its functionality. This configures you with access ONLY and is covered in this document. A shortcoming of this method is that the BlackBerry will not save message trail icons (forward, reply, etc.) to the server. To configure your BlackBerry device, follow the instructions below: 1. Locate the wireless carriers BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) website: 2. Click on the carrier to be redirected to the proper website. 3. The website should look similar to the one in the screenshot below.

2 4. Login to the website or create new account. The user should have address. If not, you will need to create one. If the user already has a Vanderbilt account listed, delete it before proceeding. To create an address click Create Address. 5. Create a username for the BlackBerry account. Click Next. You will be returned to the main page.

3 6. The account that you created should now be setup. Click Set Up Account to add the Vanderbilt account. 7. On the next page you will input the user s address and password. Click Next. The site will try to find the correct settings for the Vanderbilt servers and will fail.

4 8. You will then be asked again to supply your address and password. Instead, click the bottom radio button labeled I will provide the settings to add this account. Click Next. 9. Select the radio button, This is my work account. Click Next. 10. Select the radio button, Outlook Web Access. Then click Next. If this option is not present, contact your wireless carrier.

5 11. Fill in the boxes with the information shown in the image. Use your VUnetID in place of vunetid. Replace with your preferred BCA address. Verify your password. Click Next. 12. You should get an Account was setup successfully message. Click OK to continue. You will be returned to the main page. It should look similar to the image below. To setup any additional account, click the Set Up Account button. Otherwise, select the Service Books option on the menu.

6 13. Click the Send Service Books button. This will send the application and configuration information to your handheld. Your device will become slower for a few minutes as it receives this information. 14. You may now log out of the BlackBerry or carrier site. Your device should have two new mail icons on the screen. One for the Blackberry address and one for Vanderbilt. It can take up to twenty minutes to start receiving messages. Contact your wireless carrier if you have further issues.
