1 Opening a new case in LINX (Civil, Domestic, Probate/Guardianship, Adoption/Paternity or Tax Warrant cases) Effective January 1, 2012 PCLR 30 mandates that all attorneys electronically file (e file) documents with the Clerk using the Clerk s e filing system. Self represented parties are not required to e file but may contact the LINX help line at to obtain information on how to register for a LINX account and password to enable e filing. The LINX system only supports documents that are in PDF format. Please be sure that your documents are saved in this format prior to proceeding. An ecommerce fee of $1 will be added to all monetary transactions (new case filing, ex parte submissions, working copy submissions, etc.) Begin by visiting the LINX site at linxonline.co.pierce.wa.us Click on the E File Tab If you are an attorney and don t already have a LINX account number please click on the request a LINX account link under the E File tab. All others please call the LINX help line at Enter LINX account #. This will be your Bar # for Attorneys and your LINX account number for all other registered LINX account holders. Enter PIN here. If it s your first time signing Into LINX, please use the temporary 4 digit PIN assigned to you. You will be prompted to change your PIN. Click Submit
2 Select Start New Case under drop down menu. Verify the party listed is who is filing the case. If not, select correct party from drop down. Select case type. Select Case Category (keep in mind that Category list will differ depending on what case type you have selected). Once all fields marked with a red asterisk have been completed, click Continue Verify that all the information listed in the fields marked with a red asterisk is correct. If changes need to be made, attorneys should contact the Washington State Bar Association. All other parties please contact the LINX help line. When information is correct, Click Continue.
3 Under the NEW CASE litigant add screen please verify the Case Type, Category, Filing Fee and Track before proceeding. If any of this information is incorrect please click the Back button to return to previous screen and make appropriate changes. You may also click Cancel Filing at anytime to cancel new case filing and return to main E Filing page. Select the party type you wish to add from the drop down menu next to Type. Enter the parties name in the blank space below. You must click ADD to add a party. If you click Continue you will receive an error screen and will have to re enter party information. You must add separate listings for each party involved. Please list one Plaintiff/Petitioner and one Defendant/Respondent. Clerk s Office staff will list the remaining parties when the case is entered into LINX. **Please add a person in the format of Last, First MI and a business with no punctuation. This is how it will show up on the Case Cover sheet. Click ADD You will use this screen to verify the parties information. Once you have added all parties and have verified all the information to be correct, click Continue. If you wish to delete a party prior to proceeding, do so by clicking the DELETE button to the right of the party you wish to remove. Next you will be required to upload documents to your case. Please remember that documents need to be in PDF format prior to uploading. If your documents have not been saved in PDF format, please do so prior to proceeding.
4 All documents that are required at the time of filing will appear on the documents screen (as seen below). You will be required to attach as image to each of the listed documents in order to proceed. You will notice that the Case Information Cover Sheet has already been prepared based on the information you have submitted so far. To attach an image to a listed document click ADD This will take you to the below screen where you will select an image from the files stores on your computer. Please remember that files must be in PDF format. You will note that the Document Description is Prefilled with the document You had selected on the previous page. Click on browse to select image to be attached.
5 A window will pop up prompting you to Choose a File to Upload. Select file to be uploaded from list. Click Open You will see the file name of the image you have just selected. Click Upload Document If you would like to file attachments click on Browse and you will be directed to the Choose File to upload screen again. When finished uploading, click Continue
6 You will be taken back to the screen that has a listing of all the documents to be filed. You will see the documents that are ready to be filed as well as a listing for any documents that still need to be uploaded (marked by a red asterisk). If you have documents that are still required prior to filing please follow above steps for each document. If you have additional Documents that you wish to upload that are not required at the time of filing you can do so by selecting a Document from the list under The drop down menu next to Add Another Document. **It is very important to remember to e file each document separately. Once a document is submitted and accepted by a clerk that document is part of the court record. Changes cannot and will not be made by the Clerk s Office without order of the court. If you upload supporting documents to a Lead Document in error and it is accepted for filing, it will be listed as one document (under the title of the Lead Document) in the court file. The easiest way to remember to keep them separate is to work off the rule that if you wouldn t staple the hard copies together for filing then you shouldn t attach them electronically. When you see your list of documents there should be a separate listing for each document you wish to file. If there isn t, review the steps you have taken and make necessary corrections. If you are still having issues feel free to call the LINX help line. Select document you wish to Upload and click ADD (If you do not see a listing for the document you are looking for, just select any from the list. E filed documents are sent to a queue where they are verified prior to filing. Your document listing will be updated to reflect the proper title when it s listed on LINX.)
7 Once all the required documents have been attached and you are finished attaching any supporting documents you may wish to file please review the filing fee amount, the $1 ecommerce Fee and the Total fees due for filing. Once you have verified that all information is correct Check the box next to I certify to initiate the Submit Filing button. Click Submit Filing. Verify fee information to be correct. Choose which account you would like to use. Click Pay. Select PAY NOW
8 Verify the Account Number, Account Nickname, Customer Name, Remittance Information, Payment Amount and Payment date to be correct. Once you have verified the above information to be correct, select the Payment Account you wish to use from the drop down. Click PAY NOW Please update all required fields. If you wish to save payment information for future use, please select Yes and enter a Nickname. Click Continue
9 Verify all the information to be correct. If changes need to be made, click Modify. If everything is correct, click Confirm You will receive a confirmation screen that lists the case number, case name, Date and Time filing was submitted, a list of documents that have been submitted along with confirmation numbers, your payment confirmation number, the total fees authorized and an address that this information will be sent to. From here you can serve other parties, submit working copies, begin another e filing or view the case you just filed.
