4 1. Multi-media Learning System (MMLS) The control system is the heart of the MMLS. With the concept of centralizing all the control functions onto a single user interface, all the hardware, software and peripherals are integrated into this all-in-one control system. Teachers may click on simple icons for controlling all audio-visual, computer network and multi-media learning equipment/facilities installed in MMLC to cater for learning and teaching purposes. Control System of the MMLS Two monitors will be required at the teacher s PC, one for teacher to view the teaching material, the other to indicate the All-in-One control interface. Teacher can view directly the students status, names, group numbers, etc. Six modules are embedded onto the All-in-One control interface: Teaching Centre, Media Share, Digital Virtual Recorder (DVR), Follow Me and Video-On-Demand (VOD). These modules can work individually or together to allow teacher to conduct the class effectively. The MMLS provides control interfaces in both English and Chinese. Teachers can simply change the interface language by clicking the control icon. With the help of the MMLS, the teacher can broadcast real time A/V programs and computer graphics from various program sources to his/her PC, individual students, student groups, the whole class or projector for multi-media teaching. Under the MMLS, the teacher is able to remote control a Student PC. As a result, the teacher can help the student by means of remote demonstration through the system. In the meantime, the teacher can converse with that student via their headsets. The teacher may also lock the keyboard and the mouse of a group of students and darken students' screens through the system control interface. In order to monitor students effectively, both automatic and manual modes of supervision are provided. By using the supervision mode, the teacher can scan a student s screen once at a time in either pre-defined sequence or under manual control on his/her PC in parallel with the student s viewing

5 1.1 Digital Language Learning System The MMLS transforms the computer network into a simulated language laboratory environment wherever language training is required. It allows program transfer and provides simultaneous group conference capability via headsets. A model student can be assigned by the teacher to assist other students of the same group. By using the DVR or Follow Me, students discussion can be recorded during their practice. Also, a free-study group can be assigned for self-study purposes. By means of the control interface mirroring the seating arrangement, the teacher can converse with any individual student or a select group of students at any time via their headsets. In each student PC, one DVR or Follow Me with Audio-Active Comparative (AAC) function will be installed. It permits level adjustment between student track and master track so that each student can compare his/her voice with the master's for self-learning. Moreover, bookmarks can be added onto the tracks to allow repeated trials at difficult points Video-On-Demand (VOD) System The video server is designed with highly parallel system architecture for maximizing video throughput under the Microsoft Windows Media Technology system. For example: a digital camcorder provides an elementary video production environment for teachers to design and produce their own simple teaching video sources. The video management software provides a user-friendly environment for teachers to upload, delete and manage the video sources in the VOD server. The video data in this server is fully backed up by employing imaging technology for higher-level security Audio Volume Control As different A/V sources may produce different volume output, a volume controller is placed before the loudspeakers and the input of the teacher PC prior to broadcasting. In addition, the headsets for students are also provided with individual volume control for their personal adjustment Transmission of Sound of the Monitor PC to Loudspeakers In order to transmit the sound of the Monitor PC to the loudspeakers while the teacher is watching the A/V preview, VOD, PowerPoint presentation, etc at the Monitor PC, an audio cable is connected from the audio out of the Monitor PC to the Pre-amplifier, the volume of which is pre-adjusted to a suitable level. Alternatively, the sound from the loudspeaker can also be stopped by adjusting the volume level on the Pre-amplifier to zero or disconnecting the connector from the audio out of the Monitor PC. Note: The screen output of the Monitor PC can actually be transmitted to the projector. If the teacher wishes, he/she has to switch on the projector manually with the remote control. It only depended on the cabling between teacher PC and AV equipment - 2 -
