Formerly Adobe Photoshop for Photographers, learn how to optimize and unlock the full possibilities of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Harness the power of this incredible software pair in a training sequence specifically designed for photographers. Step-by-step instruction on Photoshop and Lightroom includes lessons that will hone skills. Preparing images for print output will be an important factor, and physical output is the student's responsibility; the University's Imaging Lab is available for output. Course Overview Learn how to optimize and unlock the full possibilities of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Harness the power of this incredible software pair in a training sequence specifically designed for photographers. Utilizing the software duo of Photoshop and Lightroom to maximize the digital photographic workflow is a key element of the class. Understanding the different roles and functions that Photoshop and Lightroom can have, while recognizing the harmony the software create to enable the photographer to examine, sort, and evaluate photographs, which will be followed by photographically editing the images to prepare them for a variety of output solutions including the web, mobile devices, print, and print service bureaus. Course Expectations To complete this course students are required learn the essential tools of Photoshop and Lightroom, the basic elements of a digital workflow that utilizes both pieces of software for their advantages. Attendance at all course sessions is expected, however, excused absences may occur. Excessive absence from the class sessions will impact the student s understanding of the class material and potentially the final grade. In order to facilitate an understanding of the course s aims, students are required to participate actively in class projects and discussions. While applying ingenuity through conceptual investigation is encouraged, it is imperative that students exhibit a mastery of the basic instructed processes.
2 Prerequisites Classes or Knowledge Required for this Course There are no prerequisites for this course; however, to ensure your success, it is recommended that students have a solid working knowledge of the MAC OSX. Course Objectives At the end of this course, students will be able to: Identify the Photoshop & Lightroom workspace file menus and tool panels Identify the uses for Photoshop & Lightroom in a digital workflow Identify and use tools to sort and evaluate images using metadata Identify and use tools to resize and crop images Identify and use tools with Photoshop & Lightroom to perform basic and advanced color correction of images Identify and use selection tools to edit specific image areas Identify and use tools to create and manage layers within Photoshop Manipulate layers using blend modes and layer styles Use, create, manage and manipulate brushes in Photoshop & Lightroom Identify panels and tools for creating and managing colors Create and manipulate adjustment layers Identify and use tools to create and save gradients Create and manipulate masks Identify and use pen and shape tools to create and manipulate vectors Optimize and export images using the Save for Web and Devices panel Utilize the export functionalities within Lightroom, including for Print, Web, Books and mobile services C OURSE RESO URCE S Software Documents in this course will be presented in.pdf format where possible. Students will need Adobe Reader to view these files, which you can obtain free at Written assignments may be presented as a Microsoft Word document (.doc). If students do not have Microsoft Word, they can use Open Office Writer instead, it can be obtained free at Coursework will be completed using Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. 3 The Lightroom 4 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby Additional Course Materials Supplies Students are encouraged to purchase a portable external hard drive with a capacity of 500GB. The portable external hard drive is not required, but will facilitate an easier workflow. Additionally, students should own a digital camera and storage media for that camera (compact flash cards, SD cards, etc.). The class will take advantage of the Lore.com class management site, which requires you to create an account. If you have one already, please let me know you don t have redundant accounts. C OURSE ACTI V ITIE S Readings Readings will be assigned as needed during the interim between the class meetings. Presentations There will be an instructor presentation related to the readings. Students are expected to complete all readings before the in-class presentation. The presentation will be focused more on synthesis + expansion of the reading materials, so it is their responsibility to gain a basic understanding of the reading materials first. Assignments There will be weekly assignments for this course. Assignments will be presented in class. Students will be presented with any assignment-specific files. There will also be a personal assignment for this class, driven by the student. The personal assignment will focus on improving specific areas of the software suite the students need most improvement or practice with, but will encompass all parts of the digital photographic workflow. C OURSE POLIC IES Student Feedback/Communication Students are encouraged to provide feedback to the instructor as they feel appropriate. In addition, students will be submitting feedback to the University at two intervals; the first will be during the course so that any appropriate adjustments can be made to the remaining parts of the course to ensure student satisfaction, and the second will be near the conclusion of the course for an overall evaluation. Submitting Electronic Files Students can submit electronic files to the instructor using YouSendIt.com or WeTransfer.com for intermediate feedback, during an on-going project. Students can also submit their electronic files this way for final projects when appropriate (due to illness or other circumstances). 3
4 Attendance Attendance is mandatory and essential to your performance. The information needed to complete assignments properly will be given in class. As a student in this course, it is your responsibility to make certain you obtain information covered should you miss a class session. Previously absent students must come to the following class with all of the appropriate work due for that day. All students are expected to arrive to class on time and remain present for the duration of the class. Basic color management presentation Color management options in PS & LR White Balance of RAW files Neutral balance vs. White balance Color correction tools in LR Non-destructive editing as an idea Shoot 5 RAW images using different white balance settings (at least 4 different settings), and then correct the wrong settings in LR to compare in-camera WB correction vs. LR WB correction.
