1 Syllabus: Adobe Creative Suite Overview CE 1403 C + N Fall 2015 Course Information: Continuing Education Location: Dates: Instructor Information: Name: Christine Bailey christibailey@gmail.com Policy: Feel free to contact me via but please keep in mind that due to my teaching and freelance schedule I may not be able to respond right away. If I cannot respond before the start of the next session I will address your inquiry during class-time. Instructor Bio Christine Bailey received her BS in Graphic Design from Drexel University and graduated with a MAT in Art Education from The University of the Arts. She has over a decade of experience in the design industry and is currently self employed as a freelance designer. She also teaches Continuing Ed and undergraduate courses at UArts, Moore College of Art and Neumann University. Course Description: This course will teach you the fundamentals of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Topics include image resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print set-up, photo adjustments and vector usage. Basic typography and design will also be addressed. You can expect to gain a better understanding of how the three programs work together to create products for print or the web. Pre-requisites: There are no prerequisites for this course; however, to ensure your success, it is recommended that students have a solid working knowledge of the MAC platform and Operating System. Course Overview: This course presents a comprehensive overview of the basics of the Adobe CS Suite. It provides basic exercises and projects that will introduce you to the bare bones of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. This course will integrate the theory of typography and design within each project by way of pdf examples and readings. Course Objectives/Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, students will: Identify the individual differences between Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign Manage between the three programs in an effective and professional manner Understand the use of basic typography Learn how to properly download, install and use fonts Prepare images with proper resolution for both print and web applications. Learn how to import and/or use existing photos properly with understanding of copyright issues. Modify photos via Photoshop Create projects that can be used as portfolio builders Gain proficiency with the pen tool, vector shapes, pathfinder and gradients Mock up layout designs with an understanding of print and/or internet prep by way of packaging files and links palette Create a full pdf of all semester work to present as a final pdf portfolio COURSE RESOURCES Software Course will be conducted using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign in class. Adobe CC is the version we will be using in the classroom. Adobe Acrobat will also be used to view pdf files.

2 Literature Required Readings will be supplied by the instructor Recommended but not Required: Some Helpful text books for design are as follows: How to Design Cool Stuff Before and After Magazine by John Wade Thinking with Type Ellen Lupton Any of the Adobe Quickstart Guides by peach pit press The WOW! series for advanced technique. For tutorials and additional help it is recommended to visit Lynda.com or Adobe.com for video tutorials. These tutorials are free and/or low cost. Additional Course Materials Supplies USB drive with a minimum memory capacity of 2GB COURSE ACTIVITIES Readings Readings will be assigned as needed during the interim between the class meetings. Presentations There will be an instructor presentation related to the readings. Students are expected to complete all readings before the in-class presentation. The projects will be focused more on synthesis + expansion of the reading materials, so it is their responsibility to gain a basic understanding of the reading materials first. Students will be presenting their projects in front of the class and receiving feedback. Quizzes Students are required to complete two tests. The mid-term is performance based and will be graded on how you use the programs. The final quiz is a ten questions written quiz. s There will be weekly in class exercises for this course as well as four long term projects. COURSE POLICIES Student Feedback/Communication If you experience a legitimate emergency which will prevent you from completing required coursework on time, I expect you to communicate with me at the earliest reasonable opportunity. Please state the nature of the emergency and when you expect to turn in the coursework. Submitting Electronic Files All electronic files must be submitted in.pdf format unless otherwise noted. Please name your file in the using the following convention: Project Name_First InitialLast Name. Thus, if my name where John Smith and I was submitting the Narrative PowerPoint assignment, I would rename the Narrative PowerPoint.pdf file as NarativePowerPoint_JSmith. Attendance + Participation All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness of absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. 2

3 Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Nonattendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. 4 SCHEDULE: SESSION + DATE Session 1 Session 2 TOPIC COURSEWORK DUE Introduction In-class work Class Introductions Review of Syllabus, rules and expectations. Vector vs Pixel and the role of each program. Intro to Photoshop. Basic Color adjustments. Resolution and file formats. Color correction in Photoshop using adjustments. Correcting artifacts in photos using the healing brush, brush, eraser and clone tools. Exercise: In class correct photos provided by instructor. Read through ed links on resolution and file formats/ extensions. Read BA0453 Perfect Color article. Photoshop. Selections. Moving selections from one document to another. Feathering. Potato head exercise. Scanning and importing photos. Session 3 Photoshop. Importing images from camera, web and scanner. Cropping, straightening. Resolution and file formats. Adding new color fill layers and the text tool. Color correct photos and apply a background color with additional texture found on mayang textures website. Exercise: Portrait Manipulation Project. On an 8.5x11 document at 300DPI bring in a photo of a person and implement a background and additional elements into the image. Finish Portrait. Read BA0630 Flier Design. Read BA 0613 What Typeface Goes with That? Come in with images to create a festival flier. Session 4 How to save and submit Photoshop file. Introduce Illustrator. Basic Shapes. Silhouette exercis. Outlining. Shape tools, transforming, arranging, color usage, grouping, alignment tools, pathfinder Read through BA0364 Logo of Letters. Sketch out some ideas for letter based logos for your own company Session 5 Illustrator. Logo exercises. Pathfinder, Pen tool. Exercise on pen tool. Project: Create one full color and one black and white letter based logo in Illustrator. Review for quiz. Session 6 Create thumbnails for three versions of a fictitious company s business card. The three versions can be different variations of the same design or 3 completely different designs. Read over article BA Design a Card the Easy Way & thumbnails of business cards 4

5 Session 7 Performance Quiz: Instructor will provide a file with several photos. Students will be asked to complete a layout following a set of instructions and specifications. Work on business cards Business cards due at the beginning of next class. All three business cards should be set up in one 8.5x11 page. Session 8 Typography Basics InDesign. Placing images and shapes. Packaging and Preflight. What are full bleed, safe zone and trim areas? Project: Create a flier on a chosen festival (aka jazz, winter, October, cherry blossom, etc). Body text may be copied and pasted from another source. Read BA0630 Flier Design. Read BA 0613 What Typeface Goes with That? Come in with images to create a festival flier. Session 9 InDesign. Font sites. Font book. Type tools. Body text vs Header text. Text effects. Project: Work on Flyer. Finish Flyer. Put all assignments in portfolio InDesign file and save as pdf.
