Instructor Bio: Gregg Robinson is a Design Manager and human-centered design trainer at Vanguard. Gregg has more than 20 years experience as a graphic designer, UX designer, and illustrator prior to Vanguard, as well as an extensive background in educational, marketing and corporate design. He has taught a variety of courses at University of the Arts, where he earned his B.F.A. in graphic design. Course Description Through a series of applied design projects, this course stresses the importance of typography and design in visual communication. Study basic letterforms, typographic contrast, characteristics of major type families and how to use type to visually express an idea. Students will develop an ability to create sophisticated typographic compositions using grid systems as a design tool and work collaboratively on the conceptualization, development and creation of typographic posters. Emphasis will be on the roll typography plays in communication. Pre-requisites Fundamentals of Design, Adobe InDesign or equivalent experience Course Overview Example overview text - each class will be divided between a lectures/design objectives and in-class work. Some weeks will require students to complete out of classroom assignments. This course will integrate the theory of typography and design within each project by way of examples and readings. Students will be responsible for getting work printed for assignments. Readings, Quizzes, Design Projects, Design Objectives (Lectures), Presentations and s, will all be part of the curriculum. #UArtsCE
2 Course Objectives/Learning Objectives At the end of this course, students will: At the end of this course, students will: understand the basic principles of typography gain knowledge of typographic vocabulary and typeface classification develop an eye for letter spacing, word spacing, leading, alignment and rag be able to establish hierarchies within a text and understand the role composition plays in the creation of typographic hierarchy explore the use of grid systems think broadly and conceptually about design opportunities with text demonstrate problem solving skills develop/refine a design process that includes research and sketching, as well as refinement using Adobe Creative Suite participate constructively in group critiques prepare and troubleshoot files for production work with Imaging Lab and/or other vendors to produce output create comprehensives for presentation work independently, as well as collaboratively Course Resources Software: Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop) For tutorials and additional help it is recommended to visit Lynda.com or Adobe.com for video tutorials. These tutorials are free and/or low cost. You will be able to access Lynda.com for free using your UArts login. Additional Course Materials Supplies Sketchbook pencils Thumbtacks comping materials as needed (X-Acto or scissors, straight edge, ruler, cutting mat, tape) digital storage Course Policies Student Feedback/Communication If you experience an emergency, which will prevent you from completing required coursework on time, please communicate with the instructor at the earliest opportunity. Please state the nature of the emergency and when you expect to turn in the coursework. Submitting Electronic Files All electronic files must be submitted in.pdf format unless otherwise noted. Please name your file in the using the following convention: Project Name_First InitialLast Name. Thus, if my name where John Smith and I was submitting the Narrative PowerPoint assignment, I would rename the NarrativePowerPoint.pdf file as NarativePowerPoint_JSmith. 2
3 Attendance + Participation All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness or absence. Please notify instructor if you expect to miss a class. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. This course content is delivered through a series of presentations, examples and hands-on exercises in a computer lab so regular attendance is critical to your success. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay the length of the class. There will be graded practice assignments in class as well as homework based on the class lessons each week. An absence will not be considered an excuse for a late assignment. A student with more than two consecutive, or three total absences will not be able to pass the course, even if the absence is medically excused. Each absence past the first excused occurrence will result in a lowered grade. Any materials or announcements covered in class missed during an absence are the student s responsibility. Lectures and class activities cannot be repeated. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. Syllabi Changes to the course content will be communicated by from the instructor, and the Program Director will be copied. The syllabus is subject to change based on individual needs of the class at the instructor s discretion. A project will be assigned that will involve basic typographic issues such as letter/word/line spacing, column width, alignment and rag. Preliminary discussions about the concept of text and communication (What s it about? Who is the audience? What s the title? Etc.) will take place. In-Class work Overview of Typography and Exploring Hierarchy Through Composition Students will explore text layouts to communicate hierarchy of information. Students will create various layouts manually before working in Adobe Indesign CC. There will be a group critique (crit) of layouts. Finalize 3 layouts for next week Times Roman, 12pt, regular Page size is w7.5" x h7.5" 06/13 In-class work Exploring Hierarchy with text weight and scale of class one layouts Students will explore text layouts using varying text weight and scale to communicate hierarchy of information. Students will create layouts manually before working in Adobe Indesign CC. There will be a group crit of layouts. Give some visual examples of it's usage (images). Organize the information as you see fit. Consider the content hierarchy and composition in your layouts. Work in thumbnails sketches before going to computer. Bring thumbnail sketches to class. Be sensitive to placement and size of page content. In-Class Work Text Management Long Documents Indesign CC Tutorial Guest Speaker Problem Solving... To work with long documents in Indesign, understanding of master pages, paragraph & text styles, primary text frame, running headers and page numbers is essential. This class is focused on reviewing these tools in Indesign CC. Students will work with provided text on a four page document. 10 2. The Language of Type 3. Spacing and Alignment In-Class Work Posters, Expressive Typography While continuing to develop and refine narrative layouts, Expressive Typography will be addressed. Production and printing will be addressed best practices for compiling assets and sending to printer. Students will also begin compiling prior text layouts to be placed in a spiral bound booklet. This will show the progression throughout the course. A template for the booklet will be provided. Session 8 Date: 08/01 Continue working on your Narrative Continue working on your Poster layouts: 5 panels accordion fold Size each panel 8in x 8in Bleeds.125in Final Type Book Layouts: Following are the Final layouts you need for your booklet. 3 finals 10pt, regular 3 finals different weight and scale 3 finals different weight, drastic scale 3 finals different weight, scale and rules 3 finals different weight, scale, rules and image (rules are optional) Provide thumbnails for each section. All finals should be ready for review beginning of last class. I have attached the indesign file for you final booklets. 08/08 Session 9 Date: 08/08 Session 10 Date: 08/15 In-Class Work Refinement Students will evaluate the hierarchy and readability of narratives and explore solutions.
