1 TRAP Tails Trail Rider Awards Program California State Horsemen s Assoc. Chair Chatter! Last issue I reported on my camping trip with my Granddaughters. Well since then I ve been busy! The TnT Weekend Ride in July was great! It is a fund raiser for Region 5 s TRAP and Trails program. The weather in the Bay Area was fantastic and so was the riding and company! Thanks so much to everyone that helped make it as success! To make it extra special, my sister came out from Idaho with her horse and my sister and niece from Colorado were also in town so they all came to the TnT. The weekend was kind of a family reunion! My niece is 8 years old and of course horse crazy (what little girl isn t at that age!). So Buddy went back to being a lesson horse while they were here and was such a good boy and took great care of Ashley. We came home on Monday, did the laundry, then my sister (from Idaho) and I left on Wednesday for Pt. Reyes. Again great riding and so much fun just hanging out with my Sis! We left Pt. Reyes Saturday morning so Cindy could make the trip back to Boise. I did my laundry again, kissed my husband, then loaded up Sunday morning and left for 6 days for the High Sierra Ride with my friend Diane Offutt. This was a first for both of us. After some trepidation about are you sure this is the right road? we arrived at Eagle Meadow Horse Camp off Sonora Pass in the Stanislaus National Forest on the edge of the Emigrant Wilderness. We pulled in and our hosts, Twain Hart Horsemen, helped us park and get set up. The next morning following a great breakfast, we joined a group and rode to Long Valley and had lunch at a waterfall at the end of the valley. We took it easy that first day to acclimate our boys to the 6,200 altitude at the camp. After that it was Katy, Bar the Door! We hit the trails every day and rode into the Emigrant Wilderness and up Eagle Pass and over to McCormick Pocket and to the Picture Rock and places in-between! We had a great time! The weather was perfect for riding during the day but it got COLD at night. We woke up with icicles on the roof of the trailer the first 2 mornings before we wussed-up and turned the heater on at night! The food was fantastic, I think I might have even gained a pound (or two). They had something every evening, a speaker, an auction, a small band, etc. and of course, the annual horseshoe tournament (which my partner and I almost won). 2 Page 2 (Continued from page 1) The trails and terrain were varied with meadows, rocks, granite, creeks, ponds, downed trees, steep climbs, etc. This was Buddy s first time in the back country and I have to say I was concerned due to his missing eye. He took to it like a duck to water and it was like he d been doing it all his life! Never missed a step and never balked at a water crossing. All in all it was a great trip! I then spent 5 days at home (did the laundry again) and went back to Pt. Reyes for a long weekend with my daughter and my son s family. Laughed a lot, rode a lot, and had a great time! Now I m home for two weeks before leaving again for the Bay Area Hills 6 Day Ride with my son. While I m home I ve been catching up on TRAP and all hours received as of 8/18 have been posted and awards ordered or sent. Oh, and I ve been spending some time with my husband, we celebrated our anniversary today but it really was on August 4th, and where was I? That s right.. I was riding in the Sierra! To be sure your hours are counted, send your hours in within 15 days of the end of the program year, e.g. if program ends on 9/30 hours must be received by 10/15. Regions Program Years Region 1 = 10/1-9/30 Region 2 = 1/1-12/31 Region 3 = 9/1-8/31 Region 5 = 10/1-9/30

3 Page 3 Camping Recipes! Praline French Toast 3/4 cup butter 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 cup pecans (or walnuts), coarsely chopped 8 large eggs 1 1/2 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 loaf French bread, cut in 1 slices In a Dutch over, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar. Sprinkle with nuts and remove from the fire. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs and stir in the milk, vanilla and cinnamon. Dip the slices of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak in. Arrange the slices over the brown-sugar mixture in the Dutch oven. Pour any remaining egg mixture over the bread. (If it seems a little dry, I add an extra egg and a little milk.) Cover and bake for 35 to 40 minutes on medium hook over low fire until the toast is golden brown and all egg mixture is set (similar to custard). If you feel lucky try inverting onto a plate to serve. I however use a large spoon to dip out the bread and drizzle sugar and nuts on top. Marie s TIPS: 1. Line DO with non-stick foil to make it easy to remove bread and clean! 2. The trick is to cook slowly on low heat or the sugar will burn! Be sure to put coals on top of DO so top cooks and browns. 3. You can also bake in the oven in a casserole dish at 350 degrees for approx. 35 minutes. Makes a good holiday breakfast! The kids love to make it! Our French Toast at Skillman - YUM! A good recipe for those mornings when you want to kick back and relax before hitting the trails. This is soo good! You can save left-over s for dessert! It is similar to bread pudding!

I live with my boyfriend (he is the caretaker for EBRPD Clayton Ranch Acquisition II), and I am lucky to have access to a lot of private property and park land that is not open to the public yet. I am a Registered Veterinary Technician, and I currently work at Veterinary Medical Specialists, as an Internal Medicine & Oncology Nurse. I have three horses, Squirt is a 16yr old ApHC Gelding, who is unfortunately blind, so he is retired and lives at my parents with his seeing-eye goat Raven.
