3 History of ITS standards development 1990s: ISO TC204 and CEN TC278 (ITS and RTTT) 2001: ISO TC204 WG16 (CALM communications, and probe data) 2004: Car-to-Car Communication Consortium 2004: EC-founded CVIS project (and others related to ITS) 2007: ETSI TC ITS (Road safety and traffic efficiency) 2009: ISO TC204 WG18 / CEN TC278 WG16 (Cooperative ITS apps) 2009: EC mandate M/453 on C-ITS 2009: EU / US joint declaration of intent on research cooperation in C-ITS 2012: EU / US joint task groups to achieve global harmonization in C-ITS 2012: ETSI CTI: The global test house for C-ITS See ESF News at Edition 2012 coming soon! 3

5 Management MI MN MF SI SN Security SF Communications & Applications Communication protocols are within the Access Layer, the Networking & Transport Layer, and in the Facilities Layer. C-ITS application protocols are in the Applications entity, and partly in the Facilities layer The ITS station is managed locally by protocols located in the Management Entity The Security Entity is providing protocols to secure communications, applications, and physical units. 6 Conformance & Interoperability Testing The basis for conformance and interoperability testing was set up by the ETSI guide taking into account base standards from ETSI and ISO. 6

Experienced in writing test specifications for base standards from all interested SDOs Experienced in building test platforms, e.g. the C- ITS test framework developed under EC mandate M/453 Experienced in running interoperability trials See presentation of CTI for details. 7

12 Next steps Extension of the existing conformance validation framework at ETSI CTI, which was originally created to test ETSI standard implementations related to road safety, e.g. GeoNetworking, CAM, DENM. The extended framework will support C-ITS standards developed at ETSI the set of CALM standards developed at ISO TC204 WG16. Initial implementations will be in support of ISO 21218, ISO , ISO , , C-ITS application standards currently under joint development at ISO TC204 WG18 / CEN TC278 WG16 Stakeholders are implementing ISO / CEN protocols and ETSI protocols in a single ITS station, and plan to use the extended conformance validation framework. A subsequent step will be interoperability testing of equipment supporting the full scope of C-ITS. 12
