Application Scenario This document outlines the configuration steps for deploying Mediatrix FXS units, i.e., 1124 (24-ports), 1104 (4-ports) and 1102 (2-ports), in an H.323 environment with the Nortel CS1K Gatekeeper. Note: Under the H.323 protocol, the Nortel CS1K supports only basic call functions and CLID with remote analog gateway. Other enhanced features, such as Call Forward, Call Waiting, Message Waiting Indicator, etc, are not supported. The following configuration notes are not a substitute for the Mediatrix Administration Documentation for Mediatrix analog products. Please have the following manuals available for reference: Mediatrix 1102, 1104, and 1124 H.323 Administration Manual and User Manual Mediatrix Unit Manager Network Administration Manual All relevant Nortel CS1K Manuals Page 3 of 14
Configuration Notes What You Need up Front The following is a check-list of items that are required before you proceed to provision the units: 1. A PC running Windows 2000/XP. 2. Set the IP address of the PC to the same subnet as the Mediatrix unit. Note that a recovery reset puts the unit to while a factory reset puts the unit in DHCP mode (please refer to the manuals of the Mediatrix unit). 3. Mediatrix Unit Manager Network (UMN) it can be found on the CD-ROM that is shipped with the Mediatrix unit. Please install it on the PC before configuring the Mediatrix Unit. 4. Please install all relevant CS1K management tools. Running the Unit Manager Network (UMN) Software The Unit Manager Network software provides customers with a configuration and management tool for Mediatrix units. The UMN is provided on the CD included with the unit. It has a default 3-unit limit upon installation. This will suffice for most configurations. Before starting the configuration, it is recommended that the administrator uses the UMN to configure the Mediatrix units. Step 1: Select Start Menu > Programs > Unit Manager Network 3.2 > Administrator. Step 2: In the Administrator login window (Connect to Unit Manager), the IP address is a loopback address that refers to the local PC to which the UMN is connecting. A User Name and Password are not required. Click OK to proceed. Step 3: Right-click the Unit Manager level, then select Autodetect. Page 4 of 14
Step 4: Set the IP Address Range in order to minimize the time it takes to auto-detect the unit. When the unit is detected, the Result section displays the unit. Select the unit and click OK. If you are performing the initial configuration of units that require a static IP address and you do not use DHCP, then connect one unit at a time since they will each use the same IP address after a recovery reset. Page 5 of 14
Configuring the Mediatrix FXS unit Step 1: Setting up IP addresses and network configurations Once the Mediatrix FXS unit comes online, select the Administration page and configure the IP addresses parameters for the unit. Uncheck the Use DHCP option if you are not using a DHCP server to assign IP addresses. Page 6 of 14
Step 2: Restart the unit Once all set, click OK and the corresponding MIB variables on the Mediatrix FXS unit are updated. Restart the unit by rightclicking it and selecting the proper restart method, as depicted below. There are two types of Restart: Abrupt and Graceful. The difference between the two is that with a Graceful Restart, the unit will restart only after all phone sessions are completed, while with Abrupt Restart, the unit will restart regardless of the unit s status. Page 7 of 14
Configuring H.323 Parameters Step 1: Setting up gatekeeper IP addresses On the Mediatrix FXS unit, the Gatekeeper IP addresses can be statically assigned or acquired by DHCP. First, right-click the H.323 page, as shown below, to get to the H.323 configuration menu. The following window opens: In this example, the Use DHCP option is unchecked, i.e., only static addresses are used. The IP address of the Nortel CS1K Signaling server, , is manually assigned in the Gatekeeper section. Page 8 of 14
Step 2: Setting up the H.323 Registration Method In this example, the Single Registration Method is selected. All 4 ports register with the gatekeeper as a single endpoint. If the Multiple Registration Method is selected, each port on the Mediatrix unit registers as an individual endpoint with the gatekeeper. Step 3: Define the aliases for each phone line In the H.323 signaling protocol, an address is called an alias address or simply an alias. Up to 2 aliases can be assigned to each line. A line will be locked if it is not defined with any alias. In this example, Alias 1 of Line 1 is defined with the number 4101 of the type PRLN (Private Local Number). In order to have the phone calls routed properly, it is very important to make sure all parties in the VoIP network have the same Alias type (which can be E.164, IP address, PRLN, etc). Alias 2 of line 1 is defined with the name Mediatrix2 of the type H323ID. Step 4: Adjusting the PTime parameters for different encoding algorithms To ensure better compatibility with the CS1K, it may be necessary to adjust the PTime on the Mediatrix FXS unit. The PTime is also known as the Packetization time or packetization period; it is the duration (in ms) of the voice packet. To get to the PTime table, right-click on the unit and select Edit SNMP, as depicted below: The Edit SNMP window (as shown below) will open. Make sure the Automatic GET box is checked. The PTime table is located under the OID (Object ID) Mediatrix.mediatrixConfig.voiceIfMIB.voiceIf CodecTable. Page 9 of 14
You can find the PTime for each individual coding algorithm, such as G711 A-law, G.723, G.729, etc, in this table. Some firmware releases with a Nortel-specific profile have these PTime changes built-in (on the UMN unit overview page, the SNMP sysdescription provides information on the firmware release and profile; a Nortel-specific profile has a profile number that starts with NT, while a Mediatrix profile starts with MX). However, users should verify each individual value to ensure the proper changes have been made. To edit the PTime, double-click the value of interest. When it is finished, click the Set button as seen below. A series of SNMP Set Commands are issued to the unit. The change will be effective once the unit restarts. Note: In order to work with the Nortel CS1K, it is strongly recommended to change the Maximum PTime value from 100 ms to 40 ms and keep the Minimum PTime as 10 ms. Also, disable G.723 and G.711 a-law (or u-law, depending on your location) encoding, which are not used. Please refer to the CS1K configuration or manual on the range of PTime the CS1K supports. Page 10 of 14
Step 5: Change the DTMF transport from InBand to outofbandusingsignalingprotocol Change the MIB voiceifdtmftransport variable value from InBand to outofbandusingsignalingprotocol. Step 6: Disable T.38 Fax To access the port setting of the unit, right-click the Port option. Page 11 of 14
All Mediatrix FXS units support the ITU.T T.38 Fax Relay over IP standard, and it is enabled by default. To ensure smooth operation with the CS1K and other Nortel VoIP devices, disable the T.38 fax option, as shown below. Step 7: Restart the unit so that changes may take effect. Page 12 of 14
Verification on CS1K User interface Now the Mediatrix units should be able to register with the CS1K. The user may want to verify by logging into the CS1K user Interface Step 1: View Live Database Entries Check here to see whether the two Mediatrix units have registered with the CS1K or not. The alias name and IP address of the unit are displayed if it properly registers with the CS1K. Page 13 of 14
Going further into the database, you should be able to see the phone numbers of each line as defined in the Mediatrix UMN. Now, you should be able to make phone calls from other H.323 endpoints to Mediatrix and vice versa. Page 14 of 14
