1 AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment Due date: September 2017 Instructor: Mr. Alwin Tareen Downloading and Installing the Anaconda Integrated Development Environment(IDE) The following is a step-by-step tutorial for downloading and installing the Anaconda software that we will use in this class for developing Python programs. This tutorial goes through the process with Windows, but Mac users should be able to use this tutorial as well. The specific version we will be working with is Python 3.6. I understand that there is an earlier version in existence, called Python 2.7, but that version is in the process of being deprecated. In other words, the Python language maintainers have decided that Python 2.7 has reached its end-of-life cycle, and it will no longer be actively maintained. Therefore, from this point onward, my courses will use Python Point your browser to the following URL: You should see the following download screen. Select your specifc operating system by clicking on one of the icons for Windows, Mac or Linux.

2 2. I have selected the Windows download. Then, for the Python 3.6 version, select the appropriate system architecture, either 64-bit or 32-bit. 3. The Anaconda installation file should be downloading. It is a big file, around 350 Megabytes, so the process will take a long time. In my case, I had to wait an hour for the download to complete. You may have problems with your internet connection, so it may even take several attempts for the entire file to download. Be patient. 4. Once the download is complete, you must run the installer. Double-click the installation file, which in my case is Anaconda Windows-x86.

3 5. Then, you should see the initial Anaconda Setup Wizard appear. Click on Next and then follow the prompts to install the software. 6. The Licence Agreement window is presented. You are not expected to read this. Click on the button I Agree.

4 7. You are now asked to choose the particular installation type. Select the radio button corresponding to Just Me(recommended), and click on the button Next. 8. Now, you must choose the install location. In most cases, the default location is fine. However, due to memory constraints, you may elect to place it somewhere else. I have chosen to intall it on my D: drive. Click on the button Next.

5 9. The next window indicates some advanced installation options. The default settings are fine. Click on the button Install. 10. If everything proceeds properly, you should see an installation complete window. Click on the button Next.

6 11. Finally, you should see a window which thanks you for installing Anaconda. There is no need to learn about Anaconda Cloud or Anaconda Support, so click on these checkboxes to de-select them. Then, click on the button Finish.

7 Writing and Running a Python Program using Anaconda Spyder 1. Go to the Start menu, and choose the Anaconda3 folder. You will see several applications in this folder, but the one we will use is called Spyder. Click on the Spyder icon to run the application. 2. At this point, the Anaconda Spyder Editor Window will appear. Click on the New File icon, the one on the far left.

8 3. You should see a new tab appear, with the title untitled0.py. It has some comments in it by default, which I will erase. 4. The editor window is now completely blank. I have enlarged the font by performing the gesture Ctrl + Scroll Mouse Wheel.

9 5. Type the following Python program into the editor window exactly as it is listed, with all of the punctuation marks. 6. The next important step is to save your Python program. Click on the save icon on the toolbar. Name your Python program helloworld.py and place it somewhere relevant. In my example, I have placed it in a directory called apcsprinciples.

10 7. To run your program, click on the green triangle icon. You will see the following settings dialog box appear. These default settings are fine. Click on the button Run. 8. The output of your program will appear in the IPython console at the bottom right. You should see the words Hello world displayed on the output. Good work!
