1 Happy Haunting Halloween Created with 5D Embroidery Extra Software By Debra Bohn Try out the ExpressDesign Wizard options in 5D Embroidery Extra software as you create your own unique Halloween design suitable for a tote bag or wall hanging. Reset All Modules 1. Open 5D Embroidery. 2. QuickLink to 5D Configure. 3. Click Reset All Modules. 4. Click OK to the message, All modules will be closed and reset to their default settings. 5. When you see the message, Please confirm that all modules except 5D Configure are now closed, ensure no other modules are open in the background. If they are, click the module(s) in the background, and close after saving any work that might be in progress. Click OK to the All modules will be closed message when you have verified all other modules are closed. 6. Click OK to the message, All modules are now reset to their default settings. 7. Click the Appearance tab. Since we will be working with specialty threads, we will change the background color to the color our fabric will be. 8. In the Colors box, click the down arrow next to Background. 9. Click the gray 50% color on the second row, last column. Click OK. 10. Click OK to close 5D Configure. Page 1 of 7

2 Creating the Pumpkins 11. Click 5D Embroidery Extra. 12. Click Preferences. Set Grid to 10mm. Click OK to Preferences. 13. Select the Hoop icon and select PFAFF creative sensation from the Hoop Group down arrow. 14. Select the 200mm x 200mm - creative Quilter s Hoop for the Hoop Size in the Vertical Orientation. 15. Click OK to close Hoop Selection. 16. Click the down arrow to the right of Express Design Wizard to open the two choices available: Fit to Hoop and Fit to Rectangle. 17. Click Fit to Rectangle. 18. Move the mouse pointer over the hoop. Drag a box six grid spaces across and five grid spaces down and then release the cursor to set the rectangle. 19. Create Express Embroidery is already selected. Click Next. 20. Click the View Picture icon. In the Directory Browser click the three dots. Click the + or next to 5D Embroidery to open the folder. Click the + or next to Samples. Click the + or next to 5D Emb. Click the + or next to Pics Click the Holidays folder. Click OK to view the thumbnails. 22. Click the page down arrow two times. 23. Click the pumpkin in the second row, third column. 24. The image is automatically displayed in the Wizard. Click Next. 25. On the Rotate page rotate to 336º. 26. Click Next. Cropping is automatic, so no change is needed. 27. Click Next to go to the Reduce Colors page. 28. On the Reduce Colors page, change the number of colors to 5. Click Next. Reducing the colors will eliminate the shading. Since our design is small Page 2 of 7

3 we do not want a lot of detail. 29. On the Choose colors page, select Automatically Remove Background Color. To see how the design would look in a specialty thread, try double-clicking on the first thread color, and selecting Gutermann-Sulky Glowy 40 from Show All Thread ranges if desired. 30. Click Next. 31. On the Fabric and Stitch type page, uncheck Design Underlay. 32. Change the Preferred Stitch Type to 2 (the second mark from the left) by using the slider. Click Next. 33. Click Finish. 34. Move design so horizontal selection box rests half a grid box above the center horizontal line on grid and vertically rests on center line of the grid. Adding Lettering 35. Click the Letter tab in the Control Panel. 36. For Font category select Fun by clicking on the down arrow. 37. For Font select Ghoulish B 18 36mm by clicking on View Font. Click any font in the list, and use the keyboard arrows to scroll through them. The Font name in the bottom of the Preview window will change as you scroll. 38. Click OK to select the Font. 39. Click in the Letters box and type Happy. Hold down the control key and touch enter on your key board. Let go of the control key. The blinking I should now be underneath the word Happy. 40. Type Halloween. 41. Leave the Size set at 18mm. 42. Click Full Circle for the Line Type. Click Apply. 43. Enlarge circle just a little bit by dragging the blue upper square up and using the grid, until it looks right to you. 44. Click the Design tab. 45. Click ColorSort to combine the letters. 46. Click Color 1 in Color Select. Page 3 of 7

4 47. Select Show All Thread Ranges. 48. From the drop down arrow select Robison-Anton Rayon 40. Select a white from the Quick Colors. Click OK. 49. Hold the CTRL key and touch the A key to select all designs. 50. Click Center in Hoop. 51. Click outside the selected designs to deselect them. Adding More Pumpkins 52. Click the pumpkin to select it. 53. Click the Edit tab in the Control Panel. 54. In the Select area, click Freehand Select. 55. Draw a selection line around the pumpkin. 56. Click Copy. 57. Click the Design tab. Click Paste. 58. Move the pumpkin to the left or right side of the center pumpkin. 59. Click Paste. Move a third pumpkin on the other side. Look at the example for guidance. 60. Click Combine and Colorsort. 61. Click Save as. Save design as Three Pumpkins. Using Express Trace 62. Click the down arrow to the right of Express Design Wizard to open the two choices available: Fit to Hoop and Fit to Rectangle. 63. Click Fit to Rectangle. 64. Move mouse pointer over hoop. Drag a box five grid spaces across and six grid spaces down. 65. Release the mouse button to set the rectangle. Page 4 of 7

5 66. Click Create Express Trace. Click Next. 67. Click the View Picture icon. The Picture Viewer, Directory Browser should read C:\documents \5dembroidery \samples \5demb \pics2 \holidays. 68. Click the page down arrow two times. 69. Click the corner spider web in the first row, fifth column. 70. The image is automatically displayed in the Wizard. 71. Click Next. No change is needed in Rotate Picture. 72. Click Next. No change is needed in Outline Finder and Expander. 73. Click Next. No change is needed in Monochrome Threshold. 74. Click Next. No change is needed in Crop Picture. 75. Click Next. On the Express Trace Options page, select Quick Trace Heavy. 76. In the Stitch Options box change the length to 2.5mm. Click OK. 77. Click Thread Color. 78. Select Show All Thread Ranges. From the drop down arrow select Robison Anton Metallic J Select color #1013 Black. Click OK. 80. Click Next. Click Finish in Design Preview. 81. Click Copy. 82. Move web to upper left of hoop half a grid space from the hoop boundary mark. 83. Click Paste. Move web to the lower left of the hoop. 84. Flip Vertical by clicking the white arrow on the top of the selection box. 85. Click Paste. Move web to the lower right of the hoop. 86. Click Flip Vertical and Horizontal. To Mirror Side to Side, click on the white arrow on the left of the selection box. 87. Click Paste. Move web to the upper right of the hoop. Page 5 of 7

6 88. Click Flip Horizontal. 89. Click Combine and Colorsort. Using Create Express Border 90. Click the down arrow to the right of Express Design Wizard. Click Fit to Rectangle. 91. Move the mouse pointer over the hoop. Drag a box five grid spaces across and two and a half grid spaces down and release the mouse button to set the rectangle. 92. Click Create Express Border. Click Next. 93. Click the View Picture icon. The Picture Viewer, Directory Browser should read C:\ documents \5dembroidery \samples \5demb \pics2 \holidays. 94. Click the page down arrow two times. 95. Click the bat in the second row, second column. 96. The image is automatically displayed in the Wizard. 97. Click Next to go to Rotate Picture. No change is needed. 98. Click Next to go to Monochrome Threshold. On the Monochrome Threshold page, move the slider to the left until all of the black fill color disappears (around 58). 99. Click Next to go to Crop Picture. No change is needed Click Next to go to ExpressBorder Options On the Express Border Options page, select Double Stitch Click Thread Color. Select Show All Thread Ranges From the drop down arrow select Robison Anton Metallic J Select color 1002 Silver. Click OK Click Next. Click Finish in Design Preview Move the bat to the left side of the hoop three grid spaces down and two grid spaces from the left Using the Zoom slider zoom out to around 60%. Use the Overview window and Pan to the bat so that you can see the rotation pointer. Page 6 of 7

7 108. Rotate the bat counter clockwise just a little Click Copy. Select the Clipboard tab in the Control Panel so you can see you copied the bat Click Zoom to Fit. Remember to use the Zoom slider to help position each bat as you need to Click Paste. Move the bat next to and down a little to the right of the first bat. The View will change so you are zoomed to fit the hoop view when you click Paste Click the Resize tool. Move one of the selection handles in to resize the bat just a little bit larger. Click Resize tool to deselect it Click Paste. Move the bat to the right of and down a little from the middle bat Click Combine and Colorsort Click Color 2 in Color Select Select Show All Thread Ranges From the drop down arrow select Robison Anton Metallic J 40. Select Color 1000, European Gold. Click OK to close Color Select. Alternatively, you could see how the thread would look using a glow in the dark thread such as Gutermann- Sulky Glowy Click Center in Hoop Click Save As. Save the design as Halloween Wall Hanging.vp3. Page 7 of 7
