2 Finding Resources on the Web Search engines - enter your search term such as "Teacher-free images" or "sounds clips" on the search engine webpage: Google.com - Altavista.com - Dogpile.com - 2

3 Lycos.com - Copying files to local computer: Hold down mouse button (on Mac) and choose download option. Save the file to your local disk. If using saved file, use the Insert/Picture/From File option on the menu bar. Alternatively, choose the copy option and paste into your Powerpoint presentation. 4 Inserting Images and Manipulating Images and Text Boxes Sources - clip art, saved files, shapes, drawing toolbar Insert menu --On Insert Menu, choose Picture/From File and locate your file --You may position your picture at any time. Notice how clicking on the picture highlights the picture. Notice the change in the border if you click another time. Handles and sizing Note the handles on corners and sides of the picture. Float the mouse on the corners, click, hold, and drag to size picture symmetrically. Copying - all objects, including pictures, text boxes and drawings may be highlighted and copied to the clipboard. Paste the copied object at the desired location in the document. Use the Shift key and click to highlight more than one object at a time. Backgrounds - Pictures may be used as backgrounds, by sizing the picture to fill the screen, or use the options on the Format/Background feature. Picture Toolbar: if the picture toolbar is not showing when the picture is highlighted, go to View/Toolbars and choose Picture. Double-clicking on the picture should bring up the format picture toolbox. 4

5 Inserting and Manipulating Images, cont. --Crop tool - click on the crop tool on the picture toolbar and position the mouse over a side of the picture. By clicking and dragging, you can crop the picture as desired. Lines and colors - When the picture is highlighted, a double-click or right-click will reveal the Format/Picture option. Note the various features of this option. Holding the shift key and clicking will highlight more than one object at a time. SAVE 5

6 Inserting Sounds Search engines - enter your search term such as "Teacher-free images" or "free sounds clips" on the search engine webpage (be careful about reaching adult sites): --Google.com Altavista.com Dogpile.com Lycos.com - Copying files to local computer: --Hold down mouse button (on Mac) and choose download option. Save the file to your local disk. Insert Menu --If using a saved file, use the Insert/Picture/From File (Insert/Movie or Sound) option on the menu bar. Be aware of the large size of sound files. As with any other object in Powerpoint, the sound icon can be minimized or hidden. Customizing appearance and timing: use the Slide Show /Custom Animation menu to use options that allow you to adjust the playing time and patterns of your sound. 6

7 Adding Buttons Insert Picture/Autoshapes With the crossbar showing, drag mouse to size your shape Size your shape as with a picture and use Copy and Paste to streamline use. (Use the Shift key and click on objects to highlight more than one at a time.) Format your shape with the Format AutoShape dialog box. Buttons can be made into hyperlinks to link to other locations within the same document. Explore the options for making buttons with the Action Buttons and Action Settings choices. SAVE 7

8 Inserting Hyperlinks Highlight text or object that will be the linked item. Use Insert/Hyperlinks on the menu bar. Note the options to link to a location within the document as well as to outside documents or web pages. Remember Jeopardy? Use the hyperlink feature to create interactivity in your presentation. Just don't forget to put in a link to get your audience back to where you want them to be. SAVE 8

9 Slide Transitions Custom Animation For animation: Highlight text box or picture Click on Slide Show/Custom animation Check out the many options in the later versions of Powerpoint that can make your presentation spectacular! 9

10 Formatting Text Highlight your text. Use the Format/Font menu to add color, size, and other characteristics to your text. Use the Shift/arrow keys to highlight text one space/letter at a time. Combine color and animation of text to create exciting presentations. Views Note the buttons at the lower left corner of the screen as well as the View and Slide Show menu items. Normal the working view Notes notes will not appear in the presentation but can be printed for presenter s use. Slide Sorter View - you can easily reposition, copy and format transition for slides in this view Outline content can be added in Outline View Slide Show presents the show for viewing. 10

11 Slide Show Manipulations View/Slide show - Slide Show/View Show - click on projector icon on lower left of screen When in Slide Show, float mouse to lower left during Slide Show and hold to reveal a menu of options Use Slide Navigation to quickly get to a certain slide. Use the pointer options for temporary emphasis while presenting. Use the Escape button to return to the working screen. 11

12 Printing Choose General/Microsoft Powerpoint from the drop down box on the Printing menu. Specify what you want to print: Slides, Handouts, Notes or Outline views. --Be careful not to send individual slides with dark colors in backgrounds out to print, as cartridge toner can be quickly used up!
