3 About the AEGIS OS MasterMap Module This module enables the Ordnance Survey s MasterMap digital map data to be used in AEGIS 3. What is OS MasterMap? OS MasterMap is the largest scale of vector digital map data produced by the Ordnance Survey and is one huge seamless map of Britain. There are two main layers in OS MasterMap the Topographic layer and ITN (Integrated Transport Network) layer The Topography Layer has nine themes representing: land area classifications; buildings; roads, tracks and paths; rail; water; terrain and height; heritage and antiquities; structures; and administrative boundaries. The ITN layer has the road network structure. Both layers may be combined in AEGIS. 3

4 Every feature on the maps from a road to a building or even your garden fence has a TOID a unique identifier. Each feature is represented as an object, and can be a point, a line (such as a part of the road network) or an area (an individual building, field or garden). The TOID for each object makes it much easier to add data for traffic and land use surveys because each feature can be linked in the data table. The TOID is the link between each building and the map. In this case, fieldwork survey data has been added to make an urban land use map. How can I get hold of OS MasterMap data? There are different routes to finding OS MasterMap. 1. OS MasterMap is held by Local Authorities under the Mapping Services Agreement which means that Local Authority schools can use these maps free of charge. 2. From early 2007 to July 2008 state-maintained schools can obtain OS maps free of charge from The Advisory Unit under the MapPilot for schools. AU Enterprises Ltd 4 AEGIS - OS MasterMap Manual

5 Getting started with OS MasterMap Module There are two AEGIS files on the disk that are starting points for adding your own data to the MasterMaps. Buildings starter file The Buildings starter has a sample of OS MasterMap with a Buildings database. Follow the instructions on the web animation or the guide on the next page to find out how to practise adding your own survey data to the table to display a land use map. Animated on-line guidance For an animated guide to adding data to the Buildings Starter file when in AEGIS click on Help, AEGIS on the web, Mastermap tutorials and choose the web page link for Making a Land use Map. 6 Making a land use survey 1) Click on the table then on the Field Definitions button Step A Buildings and table are linked Buildings are linked to the table. Click on the hot spot of a Building to bring it to the top of the list Step B Add a Land use field 2) Add a new field for Land use with the Keywords data type 3) List the land use keywords here 4) Click on OK to finish Step C Add land use data 1) Click on a building to bring it to the top of the table 2) Click in the Land use cell to choose a keyword Step D Map the land use data 2) Buildings are shaded in 3) Now add more to the table 1) Click on the Display Data Wizard to plot the land use. Choose: Area shading; Land use field; no label; change colours; add a title, then click Finish 6

8 Making a traffic survey 1) Click on the Data Table, then on the Field Definitions button Step A Road sections and data table are linked 1) Each section of road has a hotspot Step B Add a traffic survey field 2) Add a new field for Traffic survey with Number data type 2) Click on a hotspot to bring the road to the top of the table 3) Click on OK to finish 3) Add a key Step C Add traffic survey data 2) Click in the Traffic survey cell and type in the number of vehicles 1) Click on the road hotspot to bring it to the top of the table Step D Map the traffic survey 2) Traffic flow appears 4) Now add more data to the table 1) Click on the Display Data Wizard to plot the traffic survey. Choose: Flow lines; Traffic survey field; No label; Linear from 0; 4 classes; Change colour; Add a title, then click Finish. 8

10 Inserting an OS MasterMap file into AEGIS How do I find OS MasterMap files? At present these digital maps are only available in vector format from two sources for Local Authority maintained schools only. From your Local Authority OS MasterMap files are obtained from your own Local Authority s Ordnance Survey Liaison Officer (OSLO) who may be in the Planning, Highways or Environment Department. These files are freely available to state-maintained schools within the authority. You can ask for OS MasterMap topographic layer and OS MasterMap ITN layer for the grid squares you require. The files can be zipped together as GZ file, or sent as GML files. From the OS/Becta MapPilot (until July 2008) OS MasterMap files are available during the MapPilot. For the majority of schools this will mean access through their GIS supplier. The Advisory Unit can supply OS MasterMap for selected grid squares anywhere in Britain. Contact the Advisory Unit (sales@advisory-unit.org.uk) Tel: OS MasterMap vector topographic layers OS MasterMap image files All OS MasterMap Topographic and ITN GML or GZ digital map files are vector files which are separated into layers. OS MasterMap may also be supplied as an image from a web site, but these files will not have the same properties as a vector file and will not contain layers. You will not be able to add data tables for buildings, natural land or roads with image files of OS MasterMap. 10

11 Loading OS MasterMap and data Step B Inserting the map and data Step A Starting off 1) Start with a new page in AEGIS. Go to File, New. The Insert Map dialogue Box will appear. Follow these screens to load an OS MasterMap and a data table. Move and size them as you wish. Zoom in to see the map detail 11

12 OS MasterMap Tutorials When you have installed the OS MasterMap module you will have access to the tutorials. These are web-based animations that show you how to use the module and supplement this manual. If you are linked to the internet, go to Help, AEGIS on the web, MasterMap Tutorials. This will open a web page with links to the tutorials. Click on a link to load the tutorial in a new web page. There is a drop-down navigation bar at the top right of the tutorials.
