1 Quick Start Guide RIVA/Vi-PEC V88R3 ECU APPLICATION(S): SEADOO 4Tec ibr equipped models YAMAHA Models with 1.8L SVHO, SHO & HO Engine RIVA/Vi-PEC ECU Manager Web Site: NOTE: YOU MUST THE PERFORM PHYSICAL INSTALLATION BEFORE PROCEEDING. 2 1 Connecting to & Unlocking the RIVA/Vi-PEC V88R3 ECU RIVA/Vi-PEC V88R3 ECU must be physically installed in the craft prior to proceeding. If you have not completed the install Click here to download the installation instructions. 1.1 YAMAHA ONLY - Disconnect wrist lanyard from start/stop switch. YAMAHA Disconnect Lanyard 1.2 YAMAHA - Connect supplied communication cable to ECU connector with Orange O-ring (Figure 1). NOTE: Communication cable is keyed and will only connect to ECU s USB connector one way and should not be forced. Connect opposite end of cable to USB port on the PC. Figure 1 MAIN USB Communication Port on ECU 1.3 YAMAHA ONLY - On the supplied communication cable locate the Brown or Gray, un-terminated wire (ground wire) 2
3 Also referred to as ECU enable. Remove shrink wrap covering end of wire. NOTE: Do not discard shrink wrap. MAIN USB Communication Cable Ground Wire EXP 1 Cable MTX O2, Dual Map Switch EXP 2 E85 Flex Fuel Sensor 1.4 YAMAHA ONLY -Connect exposed end of ground wire to engine block or valve cover. NOTE: DO NOT CONNECT TO BATTERY. This wire, once grounded, will enable you to access the ECU via your PC with the engine off. 3
4 1.5 SEADOO only Connect wrist lanyard to DESS Post. 1.6 SEADOO - Connect supplied communication cable to ECU connector with Orange O-ring (Figure 1). NOTE: Communication cable is keyed and will only connect to ECU s USB connector one way and should not be forced. Connect opposite end of cable to USB port on the PC. 5 1.7 Open PC Link Calibration Software on your PC. Press the F3 Key on the keyboard. Calibration Software should now be connected to the ECU. In the upper right hand corner of the screen ONLINE should be visible (Figure 2). If OFFLINE is displayed no connection is active. Repeat this step again. The fault code will be cleared in a later section of the Quick Start Guide The ECU must be UNLOCKED before continuing. To do this open the Feature Unlock screen as shown in (Figure 5). Figure 5 5
6 1.9 The ECU serial number must be given to RIVA Technical Support to UNLOCK the ECU. For example the serial number as shown in (Figure 6). A RIVA Technical Support person will then give you an UNLOCK CODE that will need to be entered in the Feature Unlock Screen as shown in (Figure 6). Once entered press the Unlock button to continue. A feature unlock confirmation window will appear to confirm the ECU is now ready to run the engine. Figure 6 This space left blank intentionally. Proceed to next page. 6
7 2 Optional Base Maps & Loading a new Map Your ECU is preloaded with our Primary Map. Please verify what Primary Map is loaded in your ECU by checking the sticker located on the ECU packaging. If your craft s configuration does not match the Primary Map specifications please click here to go to RIVA ECU Manager web site Base Maps web page. Locate the map applicable to your configuration and click on the map name to expand. Locate and click on the download icon ( ) in the lower left corner of that map. Save the file to your Desktop. Continue reading the section below to send new map to your ECU. IF the Primary Map is the correct file for your application and you DO NOT require a different Map. Continue to Section Sending a New Map to ECU Refer to Section 1 for Communication cable connections for Seadoo & Yamaha. 2.2 Open PC Link Calibration Software on your PC. Press the F3 Key on the keyboard. Calibration Software should now be connected to the ECU. In the upper right hand corner of the screen ONLINE should be visible (Figure 2). If OFFLINE is displayed no connection is active. Repeat this step again. The fault code will be cleared in a later section of the Quick Start Guide. 7
8 2.3 In upper left-hand corner left click File and then Open (Figure 3). Figure 3 File Open 2.4 A new window will open to allow you to select the file you wish to send to the ECU (Figure 4). Navigate to the file. Select the file (single left click) and select Open. Figure 4 Current Working Directory File Name Selected to Open Open 8
9 2.5 A confirmation window will open to verify that you want to send the file to the ECU. Selecting YES will send the new file to the ECU and overwrite ANY information currently in ECU with the file selected. 2.6 A window will open displaying Downloading Data to ECU while the file is being sent. Allow to run. When completed a new window will open confirming the file was opened and downloaded successfully. Select YES to Store the new file in the ECU. NOTE: A Store MUST be completed to save changes made to ECU. Warning: If you do not select YES to store the file information all the previous steps will be lost. 2.7 Because you have sent a NEW Calibration file to the ECU you must power cycle the ECU before continuing. If a power cycle is not performed the remaining process detailed below will not complete successfully. Power cycle the ECU by removing the Brown/Yellow ground wire from the engine ground and replace shrink wrap cover making sure the exposed wire is protected. With lanyard disconnected depress Stop button on start/stop switch for two seconds to complete process. This space left blank intentionally. Proceed to next page. 9
10 3 Clear Installation Fault Codes 3.1 Refer to Section 1 for Communication cable connections for Seadoo & Yamaha. 3.2 If Offline is shown. Press the F3 Key on the keyboard. PC Link Calibration Software should now be connected to the ECU. In the upper right hand corner of the screen ONLINE should be visible (Figure 2). If OFFLINE is displayed no connection is active. Proceed to next step. 3.3 When the ECU is ONLINE press F12 on keyboard. Select ECU Status tab (Figure 3) to display fault codes in the PC Link Calibration Software. 11 3.4 Error messages are displayed at the top of the PC Link Calibration Software window (Figure 4). The error messages displayed are intended to quickly show ECU Errors and Fault Codes to the operator. Pressing the ESC key on the keyboard will clear the displayed error message(s) only. Figure 4 Error Message Figure 5 NOTE: Clearing an error message while a fault code(s) is still present will remove only the error message for a short period of time. The error message will be displayed again if the fault code is not corrected. 3.5 If a Fault Code is active, clear it by selecting Clear ECU Fault Codes in the ECU Controls drop down menu (Figure 5). 12 4 Calibrate FPS: WARNING: The Following Steps MUST BE Completed! Read through these instructions entirely before performing work. DO NOT attempt to start the motor during TPS or FPS Calibration process. The motor must NOT be running during this process. Personal injury may result if the Calibration Process is not completed properly. DO NOT modify ANY settings other than those discussed below. Doing so may result in an uncontrollable throttle condition. DO NOT perform this process with the craft in the water. Remove craft from water and perform Calibration Process on a trailer or work stand. DO NOT perform this process if your throttle cable is damaged and/or sticking. DO NOT perform this process if your hand throttle or throttle body has been modified. This includes electrical wiring. Contact RIVA Racing for more information. 4.1 If you have sent a NEW Calibration file to the ECU and the ECU is still ONLINE you must power cycle the ECU. If a power cycle is not performed the process detailed below will not complete successfully. Section 4.2 will outline how to power cycle the ECU. 4.2 YAMAHA ONLY Press the F4 key to make sure a Store has been performed. Remove the Brown or Gray ground wire from the engine and replace shrink wrap cover making sure exposed wire is protected. With lanyard disconnected depress Stop button on start/stop switch for two seconds. Ensure wrist lanyard is not connected to start/stop switch. Reconnect exposed end of Brown or Gray wire to engine block and/or valve cover. NOTE: DO NOT CONNECT TO BATTERY. This wire, once grounded, will enable you to access the ECU via your PC with the engine off. The power cycle process is now completed. SEADOO ONLY Press the F4 key to make sure a Store has been performed. Disconnect wrist Lanyard from DESS post. Wait two seconds and reconnect wrist lanyard to DESS Post. The power cycle process is now completed. 4.3 SEADOO & YAMAHA Press the F3 key Calibration Software should now be connected to the ECU. In the upper right hand corner of the screen ONLINE should be visible. If OFFLINE is displayed no connection is active Press F3 once again. This space left blank intentionally. 13 4.4 In the upper left-hand corner of the PC Link Calibration Software locate the ECU Settings Tab (Figure 1). Scroll down to Electronic Throttle and expand folder (single left click + symbol). 14 4.6 E-Throttle Window displays E-Throttle Mode (Figure 3). Figure 3 E-Throttle Setup 4.7 Expand drop down menu (double left click E-Throttle Mode) to expose options (Figure 4). Select ON Setup Mode (single left click). Figure 4 E-Throttle Setup Select ON Setup Mode 14
15 4.8 Warning window will appear (Figure 5). Click OK to continue. Figure 5 Click OK 4.9 Select FPS Calibration (double left click) to start FPS Calibration process (Figure 6). Figure 6 FPS Calibration 15
16 4.10 Warning window will appear (Figure 7). Select OK (single left click) to continue. Figure 7 Click OK 4.11 A new window will open with the text Press Pedal Down (Figure 8). Pull the throttle trigger in (to the hand grip) completely and HOLD Do Not Release. While Holding throttle at 100%, Select Next (single left click) to continue. Figure 8 Click Next 4.12 After registering full throttle a new window appears with the text Release Pedal (Figure 9). Release throttle trigger completely. Once throttle is released select Next (single left click) to continue. Figure 9 Click Next 16
17 4.13 A new window appears with the text Release pedal (Figure 10). Select Done (single left click) to continue. Figure 10 Click Done 4.14 Expand drop down menu (double left click E-Throttle Mode) to expose options (Figure 15). Select ON (single left click). Figure 15 E-Throttle Setup Select ON 4.15 Press F4 on the keyboard to store the settings. NOTE: This step must be completed to save the changes made. If any of these steps are skipped or completed out of order return to beginning of Section 3 and repeat entire process. WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RIDE CRAFT UNTIL COMPLETING SECTION 5 CALIBRATE MAP SENSOR. Proceed to next section. 17
18 5 Calibrate MAP Sensor: 5.1 In the upper left hand corner, left click ECU Controls then MAP sensor calibration (Figure 1). Figure 1 Options MAP Sensor Calibration 5.2 A new window will open to confirm the calibration process. Select Yes to continue (Figure 2). Figure 2 Click Yes 5.3 A new window will open stating Calibration of the MAP Sensor has completed successfully (Figure 3). Click OK. Figure 3 Click OK Press F4 on the keyboard to store the settings. NOTE: This step must be completed to save the values or the changes will be lost. 18
19 6 Saving a Calibrated Map from ECU to PC: 6.1 Calibration Software should now be connected to the ECU. In the upper right hand corner of the screen ONLINE should be visible (Figure 1). If OFFLINE is displayed no connection is active. Disconnect Brown/Yellow ground wire for 2 seconds and reconnect. Press F3. 20 6.3 A new window will open to allow you to select the file you wish to save to the PC (Figure 3). Select the file (single left click) and select Save on the window. Always save the file in the default directory C:\ViPEC\VTS. Figure 3 Current Working Directory Enter File Name Save 6.4 When completed a message window will open confirming the file was saved successfully. A copy of the calibration file stored in the ECU has been saved to your PC. 6.5 Press the F3 key on your PC to disconnect the ECU. In the upper right hand corner of the screen OFFLINE should be visible; no connection is active. 6.6 YAMAHA ONLY Disconnect the Brown or Gray ECU enable wire. Replace sheathing over exposed wire. Never ride the craft with this wire grounded. This wire is ONLY used for ECU configuration purposes that require the ECU powered and engine OFF. 6.7 After confirming correct throttle response and correct idle the craft is now ready to ride. Make several test runs on a wide open body of water to verify proper operation. This space left blank intentionally. Proceed to next page. 20
21 WARNING: Never test craft alone. Always wear proper safety equipment and obey all local laws. 7 Dash Function Info/Guide Retained OEM Functions: Dash Alarms Engine Temperature Alarms RPM Limiter (map dependent) Reverse RPM Limit (map dependent) Lost OEM Functions: Cruise Assist (FX only) No Wake Mode (FX only) Immobilizer Remote & L-mode (FX & FZ models) Off Throttle Steering (FX & FZ models)* * NOTE: OTS is not recommended for competition use. Vi-PEC ECU Functions: YAMAHA Power down craft by removing the lanyard. Ecu may operate from 2 to 20 seconds (engine will shut off immediately). Pressing the STOP button while lanyard is connected stops engine, Ecu will remain powered. Ensure lanyard is removed while craft is not in use. SEADOO Power down craft by removing the lanyard. Ecu may operate from 2 to 20 seconds (engine will shut off immediately). Pressing the STOP button while lanyard is connected stops engine, Ecu will remain powered. Ensure lanyard is removed while craft is not in use. 8 Support Troubleshooting Fault Codes can be found by pressing F12 then tab over to ECU Status while connected and online with Ecu.
