5 Chapter 1 Using this Guide Guide Overview This guide provides detailed information to support you in using the Heavy Duty Standard application with the Pro-Link iq. You can diagnose most heavy-duty engine systems that comply with the SAE/TMC J1939 protocols and are EPA 07 compliant. This guide is comprised of the following sections: Table of Contents helps you to find the information you are looking for quickly and easily. Chapter 1: Using this Guide provides an overview of this user s guide. Chapter 2:The FAULTS Tab provides instructions and illustrations on how to view the active and inactive faults detected by the Pro-Link iq. Chapter 3: The PARAMETERS Tab provides instructions and illustrations on how to view datalists and create Quick Lists for easy access to commonly-monitored parameters. Each chapter and appendix begins with an at-a-glance list of the chapter contents, along with corresponding page numbers. 2 Heavy Duty Standard J1939 Application User s Guide
6 - Conventions Conventions This section provides descriptions of the conventions used throughout this guide. Special Messages Notes NOTE provides explanations, comments, or tips related to the subject matter that is being discussed. Example: NOTE: i Refer to the page number provided for each described component for further details. Important IMPORTANT indicates a situation which, if not avoided, may result in damage to the test equipment or vehicle. Example: IMPORTANT: ä Keep all cables clear of moving or hot engine parts. Cautions CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in moderate or minor injury to the operator or to bystanders. Example: CAUTION: ä Do not use the unit to perform tests on household or industrial sources. Warnings WARNING indicated a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury to the operator or bystanders. 7 Chapter 1 Using this Guide WARNING: ä Use appropriate hand protection when handling hot engine components. Troubleshooting Information intended to help you to address or anticipate potential issues are presented in the following manner: Specialized Text If the No ECMs found... message appears, check to make sure that your iq is connected to the vehicle, and that the key is in the on position. The following specially formatted text is used to help you to differentiate certain elements discussed within this manual: Emphasis: Used to draw your attention to particularly important information. FEATURE: Used to highlight the name of a specific feature. Example: Use SNAPSHOT to record data surrounding a specific event. Field/Line: Used to highlight the name of a field or a line of text from a display. Example: A check mark is placed in the check box next to the Total Fuel Used parameter. Menu Items: Used to highlight a series of menu selections. Example: From the Main Menu, select Scan Vehicle 4Engine 1 HDS View Quick List Screen titles: Used to highlight the title of a screen displayed. 10 - Using the FAULTS Tab Getting Started After the vehicle and fault scanning is complete, the FAULTS tab is displayed on top of a number of other tabs. NOTE: i The Pro-Link iq Hardware and Software User s Manual describes vehicle and fault scanning in detail. The FAULTS tab itself displays how many active and inactive faults were detected during scanning. You can click the FAULTS tab at any point to bring it to the top of the tab stack and make it the active tab. 11 Chapter 2 The FAULTS Tab Faults: Active and Inactive The FAULTS tab displays the faults codes detected on the vehicle engine module. The fault codes are separated into two lists. The iq displays the active faults in a list on the left side of the screen and the inactive faults in a list on the right side of the screen. NOTE: i If the iq finds faults from more than one module, it lists the name of the module in the top line of each listed fault. For example, if you are looking at faults with the engine ECU, each fault code is identified in the top line (e.g., Engine #1). The top line of the fault code changes to match the specific module (for example, Engine #2 or Transmission #1) if these modules are present. Viewing Active Faults The header of the active faults list displays the number of faults in the list (for example, Active - 12). Use the Up and Down buttons to navigate the list to view all the fault codes found during scanning. The table below describes the information the iq provides for each fault code. Line Number Contents 1 (top, gray) The name of the module where the fault was found (e.g., Engine #1) 2 A short description of the fault (e.g., Intake Manifold Temperature) 3 Parameter information associated with the fault (e.g., Engine Oil Pressure 50.5 psi) 4 (bottom) SAE/DTC information about the fault (e.g., SPN FMI 4) 8 Heavy Duty Standard J1939 Application User s Guide
12 - Faults: Active and Inactive Viewing More Information on Active Faults The More Info button appears at the bottom left of each fault code in the list. To view more information about a fault code: 1 Click More Info to receive more detailed information on the fault. Figure 2.2 More Information on an Active Fault 2 After you have examined the information, click Back to return to the FAULTS tab. Some J1939 ECMs record Freeze Frame Data for certain parameters when faults occur. 14 - Faults: Active and Inactive Viewing Inactive Faults The header of the inactive faults list displays the number of faults in the list (for example, Inactive - 1). To view inactive faults that appear on more than one page: 1 Use the Up and Down buttons to navigate the list to view all the fault codes found during scanning. 16 - Faults: Active and Inactive Clearing Inactive Faults If you decide to clear the inactive fault list completely, click Clear All Faults. Inactive faults may not be cleared individually. 19 Chapter 3 The PARAMETERS Tab Using the PARAMETERS Tab From the PARAMETERS tab on the Pro-Link iq you can: Select a parameter category you wish to view View the associated Data List Manage Quick Lists The Pro-Link iq creates a PARAMETERS tab for each module (e.g., Engine #1 HDS J1939) detected on a vehicle. 20 - Selecting a Category Selecting a Category The first time you select the PARAMETERS tab, the iq prompts you to select a parameter category. The parameter categories in the HDS J1939 application are as follows: General Engine Data Fuel Data Emission Data Head Start/No Start White Smoke Low Power/No Power SmartWay Pressures Temperatures Torque Fluid Levels Light/Lamp Data Electrical Eng Brake/Retarder PTO Data Switches Transmission Data Turbo Charger Maintenance Life Data Cruise Control Settings Idle Shutdown Vehicle Params Speeds Trip Data Engine Protection To select a parameter category: 1 Click the PARAMETERS tab for the module you want (e.g., Engine 1 HDS J1939). The iq displays a message telling you to pick one of the categories listed on the left side of the screen. Heavy Duty Standard J1939 Application User s Guide 15

Click on the View Categories button at the bottom of the list to display more categories. The button indicates the number of categories available (e.g., 9-16 of 23). 2 Click the name of the category you want to view (e.g., General Engine Data). All parameters available for the category you selected (e.g., General Engine Data) are displayed in the list to the right of the categories. Values, if available, are also displayed. If the parameters cannot all be listed on the same screen, use the Previous Page and Next Page buttons to move up and down in the list of parameters. NOTE: i The Graph Page and Record Mode buttons displayed on the PARAME- TERS tab are described in the Pro-Link iq Hardware and Software User s Manual. 23 Chapter 3 The PARAMETERS Tab Creating a Quick List A Quick List is a place for storing parameters from either one or both of the following: Different categories (i.e., the categories on the left side of the display) Different modules (e.g., Engine 1, Transmission, Brakes) The Quick List is limited to eight parameters. For example, while diagnosing a vehicle, you may be interested in a few Engine module parameters and how they relate to a few parameters on the Transmission module. You can add the parameters of interest to the Quick List and view them all at the same time. NOTE: i There can only be one Quick List. You may, however, clear the Quick List and create a new one when you need to compare other parameters. To create a Quick List: 1 Start from the Parameter/Value display. 24 - Creating a Quick List 2 Click the box in the Add to Quick List column next the parameter you want to include in the Quick List (e.g., Engine Speed, Fuel Delivery Pressure, and Injector Metering Rail 1 Pres...). NOTE: i You may also select parameters from other categories (e.g., White Smoke), or from other modules if present (e.g., Transmission or Brakes). Figure 3.5 Parameters Selected for Quick List A red checkmark appears to the left of the parameter to indicate that the parameter has been added to the Quick List. NOTE: i The View Quick List button at the top left of the screen displays the number of items currently in the Quick List. 26 - Removing Parameters from the Quick List Removing Parameters from the Quick List You can remove parameters from the Quick List at any time. To remove parameter from the Quick List: 1 Click the View the Quick List button. Figure 3.7 View Quick List 2 Click on the parameter or parameters you wish to remove.
